On Tuesday our year 5 and 6 writing group continued with their project at Warkton Church. Please see Sophie and Vali’s report of what they have been doing so far on the programme overleaf. On Wednesday some of our year 1 and year 2 children from Pears and Rowans classes went off to Fermyn Woods for their Forest Schools Visit. Although the weather was cold, there was no rain and the children all had a wonderful time. It was an excellent trip, the sun even came out for Rowans, and the children had to find branches as tall as Mr Gilbert (who was the minibus driver). They also learnt how to be safe in the forest – by avoiding the thin ice on the water and played hide and seek to encourage them to think about how their voices changed as they got further away. A lovely time was had by everyone on the trip and the children’s behaviour was exemplary! I’m sure that the those children from Rowans and Pears who haven’t had their trip, and all of the children from Beeches class are looking forward to their visits next week. Let’s hope that the weather is just as kind! Maples class were lucky enough to be invited down to Southfields School on Thursday afternoon to watch a performance of Peter Pan written and performed by some of the students and then to take part in a short workshop with the students, before returning to school. It is always lovely to catch up with some of our ex-pupils, and to see how they are getting on at secondary school. Yesterday, The pantomime was really funny – our favourite character was Smee because his (her) jokes were hilarious! After the panto, we did some drama games and acted out scenes from the pantomime. This term’s leaders are: Salcey and Thetford Playschool News This week the children had the opportunity to investigate the properties of ice, thanks to Mr Gilbert who kindly brought some in from his garden on a particularly icy day! The children also enjoyed the texture of cornflour, water and shaving foam and used tools and vehicles to create patterns in the tray. Some of the children went home looking a little like "Olaf" from the film "Frozen" but they loved the experience! In our role play area we have had a circus tent and a stage where the children have dressed up and performed to their peers. We have been practicing our ball skills outside and our playhouse has been turned into a farm shop selling some unusual vegetables for the children to explore such as aubergine and courgettes. On our snack table there have been a variety of cereals with milk to sample this week. On Wednesday we wished Kial a happy 4th birthday and we welcomed Isaac to our morning session. We have some kind and friendly children in Playschool who have been helping to settle our new children and to make them feel welcome. We are still accepting applications for children aged 2 years 9 months and over who may wish to join us for possible afternoon sessions at Easter. Please contact me on 07722737657 for more information. This was the first of five visits. In the first week the children were finding out about the history of John, Duke of Montagu, and his family. We also had to choose a figure from one of the memorials to develop a poem about – particularly thinking about how the character might be feeling. This week when we arrived back at the amazing Warkton Church and were greeted by the activity leaders we spent some time examining the jewel coronet. After this we were able to make cake replicas of the coronet out of muffins and icing sugar. Finally, we were all encouraged to clear our minds and to start to use our persuasive powers to help with our poetry writing. As we were heading back to school in the minibus, we were all imagining what we might be doing next week. Thank you to Vali and Sophie for their report about what they have been doing so far for their writing project. Cedars, Oaks and Maples Cake sale will take place next Thursday 28th January. Don’t forget to bring in cakes if your child is in one of these classes, so that they can raise some money for extra resources in the classroom. Please bring cakes in on Thursday morning. Helpers will be needed to collect the cakes on the morning and to help to sell them after school. Please let a member of the PFA know if you can help.
