If you like to hear about adventure, join us at this month’s luncheon where the speaker
will be Dr. Roger Freed who will tell us of his three-week trek from Katmandu in Nepal
to the Mount Everest base camp in the Himalayas. The theme of his talk will be on the
role adventure plays in providing a deeper dimension of ourselves. Roger and his two
sons, Robb and Jonathan, spent their first three days becoming acclimated to Katmandu’s
4,383-foot-altitude after joining two other trekkers and their guide, Deana Zabaldo, who
had spent two years in Nepal with the Peace Corps.
The group flew in a small plane to the Himalayan foothill town of Lukla and then began
their hike, each carrying a 30-pound pack for five or six hours each day. Planes cannot fly
into the Everest base camp because of the thin air, so everything must be brought in on the
backs of animals and people. The total distance between Lukla and the base camp is 50
miles, and trekkers average seven to eight miles each day. For each two days of hiking,
they had to stop for one day to become acclimated to the rising altitude.
On the seventh day, they climbed to the top of Kala Pattar (18,450-feet), which provides the
most accessible point to view Mt. Everest (it cannot be seen from the base camp) and the
next morning hiked into the base camp. Very few trekkers are allowed to visit the camp,
so this was a great privilege, although they only had permission to stay one night. There
were 36 different expeditions from a wide variety of countries, with several hundred tents
and about 800 people busy with chores. Early the next morning, the group began their hike
back to Lukla, and the trip that took eight days going up, took four days going down.
Everyone in the group was struck by the friendliness of the Nepalese people, even though
they have few possessions of their own, and those that know the Freeds say all three were
somehow changed by this trip. Roger believes he now is more connected to the world
around him and the potential for change. They agree that they now appreciate, more than
ever, all the material comforts we have in this country. “For as little as they have (in Nepal),
you’ll never meet more genuine people,” said Roger.
Roger Freed has lived on the Tiburon Peninsula since 1980 with his wife, Nancy, and their
three children, Robb, Jonathan and Kirsten. He is a practicing psychiatrist and recently
opened The Center for Attention in Mill Valley (www.thecenterforattention.org) which
focuses on the solutions for attention problems.
