As it enters its final year, the sextet has already cemented its place in UCSB soccer history. The 2004 senior class helped usher in a new era of Gaucho soccer and it has been instrumental in a litany of success: two NCAA Tournament berths, two NCAA shutout wins in the NCAA Tournament, a Sweet 16 appearance, two season-ending top-20 national rankings, two Big West Championships, a 45-13-2 overall record, and 11 All-Big West awards. Suffice to say this group has proven itself on the national and regional stage. Led by the trio of Kennedy, Lochhead, and McAthy, three of only four players in school history to earn all-conference honors three times, this year’s seniors have appeared in, on average, 57 games each in their careers. With over 75 percent of their appearances coming as starters, they give head coach Tim Vom Steeg an experienced core of who have been an integral part UCSB’s success. The experience and leadership of the returnees will be crucial to the Gauchos, ranked 13th by College Soccer News and 15th by the NSCAA in the preseason polls, if they hope to compete for a first-ever NCAA National Championship. More than half of UCSB’s 2004 roster is made up of newcomers. Ranked ninth in the country by both Soccer America and College Soccer News, this year’s recruiting class will be looked at to fill the void in the Gauchos’ midfield left by the departure of Memo Arzate and David McGill. “Overall, we obviously had some holes to fill and we have addressed them in some pretty big ways,” said Vom Steeg. “In terms of the players that we have added, in terms of attacking the goal, and in terms of players we are returning, it is all there.” With a roster loaded from top-to-bottom with more talent and skill than any other in Gaucho history, the key to Santa Barbara’s success in 2004 will come in its ability to develop chemistry on the field. Fortunately for the UCSB coaching staff, they addressed that issue over a Drew McAthy season ago. “Chemistry is so important to our program,” Vom Steeg said. “We have usually been able to address this by recruiting players who are familiar with each other. Part of our recruiting plan always is to try and bring in pairs or groups from the same programs.” Finding a blend of players that works well together is at the top of Vom Steeg’s list of things to get accomplished before the season starts, because once again the Gauchos play one of the top schedules in the country. In the second week of the season UCSB travels to Connecticut to take on the former National Champion Huskies and 2003 NCAA Tournament participant Seton Hall. Just a week later UCSB heads to the University of New Mexico’s tournament to take on defending National Champion Indiana along with Columbia. When you throw the University of San Francisco into the mix, Santa Barbara will play three matches against one-time NCAA champions and five matches against teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Offensively, UCSB has an increased array of scoring threats thanks to some off-season additions and the return of All-Big West forwards McAthy and Jones. Complimenting one of 2003’s top one-two punches will be junior transfer Jonathan Davis (Los Angeles, Calif./ North Carolina) and freshman Andrew Proctor (Burnaby, BC/Alpha Secondary). Davis and Proctor will add a great deal of speed to the Gaucho attack. On the outside, UCSB returns one of the conference’s top reserves in Bly. Junior Bryan Byrne also gives the Gauchos a tremendous amount of speed coming from both sides of the field, and junior college All-American Ivan Becerra (Los Angeles, Calif./Mission JC) has an excellent left foot to go with his size. The greatest competition for playing time will come in the middle of the field. Redshirt junior Efren Mata will be expected to take the early lead in directing Santa Barbara’s attack. The fact that Mata has spent one season at UCSB probably gives him a leg-up on fellow Compton College transfer Tino Nunez (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman Tyler Rosenlund (Port Coquitlam, BC/Riverside Secondary). Combined, the threesome will give Gaucho coaches the envious dilemma of how to split playing time. While the offensive side of the ball needs to have some pieces fit together, the defensive side Dan Kennedy is outstanding. The return of three-year starters Lochhead and Apilado, along with sophomore Greg Curry who started 20 in 2003, UCSB has a core group of players with the valuable experience of playing together. Despite the experienced returnees, the Gauchos will not be playing the same defense as seasons past. “I am hoping that this year we will be able to play in the back the style and level that I think can get us a championship,” assessed Vom Steeg. Santa Barbara will not need to do that again thanks to the return of juniors Corey Wood and Pat Scott, redshirt junior Nate Boyden, and the addition of freshmen Myles Davis (Delta, BC/North Delta Secondary), Andy Iro (Liverpool, Eng./St. Edwards HS), Matt Williams (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo HS), Brennen Tennelle (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) and Chuck Anderson (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS). All five players have added tremendous size to the Gauchos defensive core with four of the five standing 6-foot-0 or taller. Between the pipes is almost a non-issue, except for the fact that sophomore Kyle Reynish is back after redshirting last season. It is a non-issue because the Gauchos return the reigning Big West Goalkeeper of the Year in Dan Kennedy. Having only missed two games in his career, both due to red card suspensions, Kennedy has started every game he was eligible for since becoming a Gaucho. Entering his final season at UCSB, Kennedy already holds the school record for goalkeeper wins with 42, matches played with 61, and his career goals against average of 0.98 is lower than any other keeper in UCSB history. And if Reynish should get the call, he has already proven to be as much of a rock between the pipes. As a freshman he appeared in seven matches without allowing a goal, posting a pair of wins. “This is the most talented team that UCSB has ever seen,” stated Vom Steeg. “But we know what happens with talent and expectations and all of that. So again, the key to this year’s team is a matter of finding the right combinations on the field. And hopefully whatever we put on the field we can build on early.” Neil Jones 3 Tim Vom Steeg Head Coach Sixth season Tim Vom Steeg enters his sixth season as head coach of the UC Santa Barbara men’s soccer program, his alma mater, having guided the Gauchos to two Big West Conference titles and two consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under his guidance UCSB has produced the Big West’s Offensive Player of the Year three year’s running, as well as a defensive player of the year and a goalkeeper of the year since the conference reinstated men’s soccer in 2001. In his five years at UC Santa Barbara he has comprised an overall record of 66-30-6, placing him 19th among active coaches at the Division I level and 44th all-time. Vom Steeg was named MPSF Co-Coach of the Year in first season at UCSB and has since coached six players who are currently playing professional soccer, including three in Europe and one in the MLS, and has seen three All-Americans take residence in the UC Santa Barbara locker room. Vom Steeg achieved a milestone in 2002 in his fourth season at the Gauchos’ helm, guiding UCSB to its first ever NCAA Tournament, and posting its first ever tourney victory in the process. The Gauchos had nine players recognized as All-Big West honorees with Rob Friend repeating as the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year as the Gauchos began charge onto the national scene. After advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the team finished the season with a No. 21 national ranking with an 18-3-1 record and a Division I secondbest +2.14 scoring margin. As much success as the squad enjoyed in 2002, Vom Steeg solidified his program’s standing amongst the best in the nation in 2003, trumping the standards set by the previous year’s team. Playing one of the top five toughest schedules in the nation, last year’s team went 16-5-1 advancing to its first ever Sweet 16 where it lost in double-overtime to the eventual national runner-up. UCSB ended the 2003 season ranked 12th in the nation by the NSCAA and had its second and third players in the last two years drafted by an MLS squad as David McGill and Memo Arzate joined Rob Friend from 2002. His third season at UCSB he saw eight players named All-Big West, including the conference’s Co-Offensive (Rob Friend) and Co-Defensive (Reuben Bates) Players of the Year. The Gauchos’ defense in 2001 tied for 24th nationally, posting a 0.42 shutout percentage, blanking eight opponents in 19 matches. In 1999 he guided the Gauchos to a 13-7-0 record in his first season at the helm of the UCSB men’s soccer program. Vom Steeg was named MPSF Pacific Division Co-Coach of the Year at the end 1999 season for guiding the Gauchos to a 10.5-game improvement on their 1998 record, the best turnaround in the NCAA at the Division I level for that year. Prior to his return to UCSB, Vom Steeg was the head coach at Santa Barbara City College, where he amassed an impressive 121-18-4 (.860) overall record from 1992 through 1998, leading the Vaqueros to five Western State Conference Championships and a 1996 California Community College State Championship. In addition, SBCC reached the State Final Four four times under Vom Steeg, most recently in his final season, 1998. Vom Steeg was a five-time WSC Coach of the Year choice in his sevenyear tenure and he was also named State Coach of the Year in 1996 and Far West Region Coach of the Year in 1997. Vom Steeg played at UCSB from 1985 to 1988, and graduated in 1989 with a B.A. in History. He received his teaching credential from UCSB in 1990. He has also earned his USSF National “B” Coaching License. Vom Steeg resides in Santa Barbara and is married to Almeria Vom Steeg and they have four sons, Justin, Carson, and twins Caden and Jared. Leo Chappel Assistant Coach Fourth season 4 Leo Chappel returns for his fourth year as an assistant coach in the UC Santa Barbara men’s soccer program. Since joining the Gaucho staff UCSB has enjoyed three of the schools best season ever, helping the program to a 45-13-2 overall record over the course of his tenure, earning Chappel the recognition as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation from College Soccer News for four years running. In the past three years Chappel has been instrumental in guiding the UCSB men’s soccer program to elite level at which it now stands on the national level. In his three seasons with the Gauchos they have won two Big West Conference titles made two consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament where they have posted a 2-2 record. A major key to UCSB’s rise to success on the national scene has been its recruiting, culminating in this season’s incoming class earning a No. 9 ranking among Division I programs. Prior to, and since arriving in Santa Barbara, Chappel has developed numerous contacts for the program on both the national and international level, helping to bring some of the top amateur players from all around the world. Chappel came to UCSB after spending the three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. While a part of the 49ers program, Chappel’s duties included everything from training and scheduling, to recruiting. His efforts were instrumental in helping UNCC to a national ranking. Prior to his time at North Carolina, Chappel coached for two seasons at Ohio Wesleyan, helping guide the Battling Bishops to a Division III National Championship in 1997. In addition to his regular coaching duties at Ohio Wesleyan, he organized Team OWU, a fundraising group dedicated exclusively to the program. In addition, Chappel spent one season as an assistant at Wake Forest. Chappel, who graduated from Ohio Wesleyan with his BA in Physical Education, is also a member of the US Olympic Development regional coaching staff and holds a NSCAA Premier License. He is married to Amy Chappel, and they are the proud parents of daughter Marley Chappel, born just prior to his second season at UCSB. The Chappels reside in the Santa Ynez Valley. UCSB had five first team honorees, Memo Arzate, David McGill, Dan Kennedy, Drew McAthy, and Tony Lochhead, the most of any team in the conference. Neil Jones, Jon Apilado and Matt Kubota were named second team and Darren Doi was an honorable mention. • Senior midfielder Memo Arzate lead the nation in assists averaging 0.82 per match with a season total of 18, matching the total he had as a junior, tying his own school and conference record. While setting a new conference and school career record, Arzate was named the Big West’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year, marking the third straight season a Gaucho received the honor. He was also named an All-American by College Soccer News for the second straight year. • Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy led was named the conference’s first-ever Goalkeeper of the Year in addition to his first team honors. Kennedy led all keepers in the conference with a 0.98 goals against average and eight shutouts. 16 Neil Jones • Kennedy, McAthy, and Lochhead’s All-Big West honors were the third each of their careers, tying them with Dave Hollingsworth (’68-’70) for the most individual all-conference honors in school history. • Junior forward Neil Jones became one of a select few in UC Santa Barbara history when he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Jones was joined on the Academic All-District VII team by Tony Lochhead. • Forward Drew McAthy finished tied for 28th in NCAA Division I with 0.64 goals per game. The junior netted 14 goals on the year, three shy of his personal best of 17 he set as a sophomore, running his career total to 35. • McGill and Arzate were both drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy, becoming the second and third players in the past to years from UCSB to be drafted by an MLS team, joining Rob Friend who was picked by the Chicago Fire in 2002. • As a team the Gauchos netted 50 goals for the fourth highest total in school history. And adding in just 23 goals allowed, UCSB finished the season with a +1.22 scoring margin, also the fourth highest in school history. • After receiving a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament the Gauchos, for the second consecutive season, opened up postseason play with a 2-0 shutout, except this time it was against Cal, the team that knocked UCSB out of the tourney in 2002.
