05:Authenticity – Week Six
BOTTOM LINE
In response to our identity in Christ, we recognize and reveal our weakness to point to the power
of God.
REFLECT ON WEEK 5
Last week we asked you to write 3 names of people who don’t have a relationship with Jesus that you
will start praying for. How did that go? Did anything surprise you?
SCRIPTURE
Romans 5:6-9
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
THINK ABOUT
“We are more
sinful and
flawed in
ourselves than
we ever dared
dream, but
at that same
moment we
are more loved
and accepted
in Jesus Christ
than we ever
dared hope.”
-Tim Keller on
the truth of the
gospel
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1.
What stood out to you from this past weekend’s service? If you have access to vimeo.com/Kensington, begin by watching the 101: Mask video on the theme of Authenticity.
2.
Ok, it’s time to get a little more honest. We often wear masks because we are embarrassed, afraid of something or are avoiding something. What reason do you find yourself wearing a mask? Why do we have this view about weakness? In what area of weakness do you wear a mask?
3.
Read Romans 7:18:
a. What does the writer (Apostle Paul) reveal about his abilities, thoughts and struggles with sin?
b. Why is it important to have a view like Paul about his own struggles and attempts to do good, but then falling short on his own strength?
4.
Read both Romans 5:6-9 and 2 Corinthians 12:9-10:
a. What does God say about our mistakes or weaknesses?
b. How would our relationship with God change if we believed these verses and lived them out in our lives?
c. What holds us back from believing these verse to be powerfully true?
5. Think of a friend/boss/parent who chooses to live authentically and honestly about their past, shortcomings and weaknesses. What about them inspires you or displays an attractive sense of freedom? How did God use their past struggles, mistakes or sins for the good in others?
6.
Read the “Think About” quote again. We believe that when we don’t fake our way through life or live with a mask on, we can experience more of God’s love, grace and truth. What is the truth you need to remember every day about what God believes about you? Share about the area of brokenness/weakness that you need to believe this truth. Before you end spend some time praying together about what your group shared.
TRY THIS
Take a piece of paper or a journal and write down the “weakness” or “mistakes” that you
think God can’t use. Spend time praying that God would reveal what He believes about
you and what He wants you to know about your “weakness”. Extra Credit: Find a verse in
the Bible that speaks truth about what God believes about you or a truth that you need
to remember when you are struggling with that area of your life! Share with the group
next week.
