This is a great opportunity for us to engage our students “where they are,” as data shows that students are increasingly browsing the web through their mobile devices. The Library will be implementing the project over the summer and it should be up and running by August. TexShare Update TLA Annual Mtg. Staff spotlight - barbara preston Working in education has been a great learning experience for me. My name is Barbara Preston. I have been in education for thirty-six years teaching elementary, junior high and adult education. I have been in the Gatesville ISD libraries for twenty-nine years. Research and using reference materials is very interesting to me. I am looking forward to broadening my knowledge and helping our MCC patrons. My husband works part time and ranches a little. We have two grown children and a Blue Lacy, the state dog of Texas, plus a barn cat. I like to read, watch movies and I love New York City. Page 2 Library displays—spring 2013 Our NeighborWorks / Communities display - encouraged community involvement and provided information regarding the NeighborWorks organization. NeighborWorks is a non-profit organization and has the following motto on their website – “Building stronger neighborhoods through homeownership and other quality housing opportunities.” African American History Month – This year’s display celebrated the anniversaries of the Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington. The theme chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History was, “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality”. Women’s History Month – highlighted the achievements of American women in the 20th century. The April / May display provided information on several colleges to which students could transfer after their time spent at MCC. Colleges featured in the display were: Texas A & M, Tarleton State University, University of Texas, and Texas Tech. The University Center along with the colleges donated posters, information, and decorations for the display. Staff spotlight Randall morgan Hello, my name is Randall Morgan, I’m the new Library Technician here in the LTC Building. I will be working with the staff at the circulation desk and with our other technicians to assist students and visitors with any computer and printing related technical problems. I graduated in the spring of 2012 with a Master of Divinity degree from George W. Truett Seminary at Baylor University here in Waco. I also received my B.A. in Christian Studies and Philosophy from Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. This is actually my first job outside of being employed by a church, so I hope to gain a lot of knowledge and experience here at MCC. I have lived in Waco, which I’ve grown to love, for about five years. I am originally from Centreville, MS, a small town of less than 2,000 people, so Waco has a lot more to offer. My hobbies and interests include playing acoustic, electric, and bass guitar and some songwriting for my church. I also love watching sports especially football and baseball and I’m sure you will hear me talking about my favorite teams. Spring 2013—Student Library Survey In February 2013, Institutional Research conducted a survey for the purpose of evaluating student experiences at the library. Of the 475 respondents, 96% agree or strongly agree that the library accommodates their needs; 92% indicate the library’s fall and spring semester hours meet their needs; and 97% say library personnel treat them with respect. Regarding usage of services and resources, 94% of the respondents have used a computer at the library and 71% have researched a topic. Interestingly, 58% of the respondents use a smartphone more than twice a week to conduct research on the library’s website. To facilitate that usage, the library is in the midst of a project to implement a mobile accessible website by the end of the summer. Survey respondents also identified several areas for improvement, including the need for additional study rooms and quiet areas. Library personnel will continue reviewing survey results to identify/enhance the services and resources needed for student success. Library The 38th Annual Service Awards were held on Thursday, March 21, in the MCC Conference Center. I never thought I would meet someone who shared the same life-long love of reading as me – but I did! I met Joe in July 2012. After many adventures – from West Fest, Texas A&M football games, a trip to the state capitol, to a very cold trip to Iowa – we are beginning a new adventure. We are getting married over Labor Day weekend in Oklahoma before moving to our next duty station. I will be leaving in August to join Joe. I will miss MCC and all of the wonderful people I have worked with for the last two years, but I am ready for the new opportunities that await! Congratulations to Christina Gilliam and Joe Moore Staff spotlight - Mavour braswell After serving as a research assistant for an environmental consulting firm, I took a job as a paralegal in a Dallas law firm that specialized in Litigation and Bankruptcy. After that, I decided to work for the Railroad Commission in the enforcement division. Later, I decided I wanted to become a teacher so I taught 3rd grade in Killeen and most recently, I served as the high school librarian at Midway ISD. I enjoy all aspects of librarianship, but my favorite area is helping students with reference questions. I like helping people find answers to their questions. I usually learn something new in the process. My husband, David, and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in June. We do not have any children, however, we have 3 dogs that we treat like children! We have a lab named Ranger, a Blue Heeler named Roscoe, and a Rat Terrier named Molly. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, gardening, reading, hiking, being outdoors, and cooking for family and friends. In July, they will become part of TexShare’s core group of databases.) * Book Review Digest Plus * Business Abstracts with Full Text * Essay and General Literature Index * Humanities Full Text * Play Index * Short Story Index The only database subscriptions that TexShare will not be renewing in 2013-2014 are Consumer Health Complete and InfoTrac Newsstand. Locate links to library databases by clicking on Articles, Research & More on the library's homepage. What’s old is new... Staff spotlight - julie overpeck, Mls My name is Julie Overpeck, I have worked in education for over 10 years. I majored in Reading and English Education at Baylor University. My MLS degree is from the University of North Texas. My husband and I have two children, both are Midway students, and one fluffy dog named Charlie. In my free time I like to play games, watch movies, exercise, garden, travel, and of course, read. Some of my favorite genres are memoirs, adventure, and mystery. Soon the MCC Archives will have a web presence, probably as a link on the library web site. Archivist Marylaine Driese has been digitizing the campus newspaper, The Highland Herald, and expects it to be available soon. The Highland Herald ran from 1967 to 2006, and was discontinued when the college suspended its journalism program in 2006. “It is a treasure trove of information and photos of the college’s history, and probably the most complete and consistent documentation of MCC’s student life we have,” Driese stated. “I’ve been working with an open source software product developed by George Mason University Center for History and New Media for use by historians and archives called Omeka, and I’m excited by the increased accessibility it provides for our users.” Library Link
