Loxton Physiotherapy Service December Newsletter STAFF NEWS Admin Staff have been kept busy with the daily running of the front desk and trying to prepare for the opening of the pool and continue the many exercise and Nordic walking classes we have running in 2014. Sandy will also be commencing a comprehensive ‘Polestar Pilates’ course in March 2014. Donna has commenced Falls Prevention Classes with the addition of new material learnt at her Tai Chi course and has had some really positive feedback from clients. Sue has had 4 days in Brunswick Heads NSW to complete Level 2 Acupuncture. This will enable Sue to trial some very new and possibly unusual techniques. Both Monique and Ryan are very keen to continue their professional development Ryan has registered for a sports injury management course in February whilst Monique has registered for a pelvis and lumbar spine course also in February 2014. We have had two 2nd year Uni students here for 3 weeks in Nov and Dec and that has kept the 3 resident physio’s on their toes. We have enjoyed having them here and hope to see them back in the future. Preventing back pain In most cases, back pain can be prevented by making a few lifestyle changes. Some suggestions include: Exercise regularly – this is important to improve posture and increase muscle support of the spine. Try walking instead of using the car. Work towards doing 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity every day. Lift and carry safely – if you are picking up a heavy load: squat down, hold the object as close to your body as practical and lift by using your legs, keeping your back straight. Get some help from another person or use equipment (such as a trolley) if the load is too heavy to manage comfortably on your own. Maintain a healthy body weight – being overweight or obese puts extra strain on your back. Be aware of your posture – consider your posture, particularly in seated positions such as when driving or sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Don’t slump, keep your back upright and use support where necessary (such as a lumbar support cushion or footstool). We now have Lumbar Supports in stock. Take regular breaks – when driving, standing or sitting for long periods of time, take a break at least every hour. This will help change the position of your joints and loosen your muscles. Include a short walk and a few stretches as part of your break. Relax and manage your pain – learn some relaxation techniques to reduce stress levels and related muscle tension. Try massage, heat or cold packs and gentle exercise. Apps for your phone are available such as “Posture Coach” . Christmas gift suggestions ********************* To your enemy, forgiveness. Balance/Tai Chi/Falls Prevention Loxton Physiotherapy Service now offers a new service for our senior clients. This service is a falls prevention program which incorporates elements of Tai Chi. Current evidence indicates Tai Chi helps to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls. The program is designed to achieve the following objectives: Improve Balance Improve mobility and coordination Improve overall health and fitness Increase confidence and overcome anxiety and fear of falling If you are interested in joining one of our classes please let us know Benefits of Wet for Wellness Exercise Sue and Chris ran our first Wet for Wellness class on 3rd and 5th December. This is always an enjoyable experience as we find so many people who would benefit from water are reluctant to try it and yet when they do they love it! There is such good evidence for the benefits of water exercise for a whole range of health conditions from arthritis to diabetes that we offer this opportunity twice a year to encourage people with these conditions to try out the facilities at the community pool and test it for themselves. You don’t have to swim or get your head wet to be able to get benefits from the water Having said that, to those who can swim -you should! Swimming is an excellent form of whole body exercise that works all of our muscles. The water gently resists our body movements and yet assists it by reducing the weight of our body and the effects of gravity. Up to 70 % of your body weight can be taken by the water if you are chest deep. Just being in the water, with the hydrostatic pressure on the chest wall has been shown to increase respiratory effort by up to 15%. This increases the benefit to the cardio respiratory system.
