Shoo-Fly Block
Supplies:
Cotton fabric scraps, lights and darks or contrasting fabric in either coordinating or scrappy
pieces (these fabrics need not fall into “light or dark” category, but in contrasting colors
designated as fabrics A and B).
Sewing machine
Sewing supplies needed to complete block
Instructions:
Cutting - Fabric A cut four 3 ½” blocks
Fabric A cut two 3 7/8” blocks; cut these diagonally into four triangles using a rule and rotary
cutter
Fabric B cut one 3 ½” block
Fabric B cut two 3 7/8 blocks; cut these diagonally into four triangles using a rule and rotary
cutter
NOTE: All seams are ¼”
Assemble the block on the table next to the sewing machine, so that it’s easy to see the design
before sewing it together. Begin at the top on the left side. Work from left to right working row by
row, for a total of three horizontal rows forming the Shoo-Fly pattern.
Row 1: place a fabric A triangle in the upper left matched with a fabric B triangle to form a square for
the first block. Next, for the center block, place one fabric A block to the right of the first block in the
row. The third block across the top row is formed by a fabric A triangle in the upper right and a fabric b
in the lower left side of the square.
Row 2: Place a fabric A block under the first row, beginning on the left. Place a fabric B block in the
center of the row. Place a fabric A block next to the center block for the last block in the row.
Row 3:
Note: All Intermediate and Senior
Quilting Skills participants are expected
to square their quilt blocks with the
Rotary cutter after completion.
Demonstration of this skill is expected

Bowtie Quilt Block
A=3” square, medium to dark fabric
B=3” square, light fabric
C=1 ½ “ square, medium to dark fabric (same as A)
Cut two of each size square. Place one of the square C’s on the lower right corner of square B, right
sides together. Place the other square C on the upper left hand corner of the remaining square B, right
sides together. These small squares, when sewn to B will make the center knot of the Bow Tie.

Mark a line beginning at the right hand corner diagonally across the center of square C. Stitch across
the line on this mark. Trim seam to 1/4”, flip and press.

Flying Geese Quilt Block- To have directions go with pictures
1) Cut one 5 ¼” squares of one fabric. Cut through squares diagonally in both directions so long
side of each large triangle is on grainline.
2) Cut four 2 7/8 squares of second fabric. Cut through squares diagonally in one direction so short
sides of each small triangle are on grainline. Cut three 1 7/8” x 12 ½” strips of third fabric.
3) Cut one sashing to be stitched along each side of geese blockset.
4) Stitch long side of one small triangle to short side of one large triangle, right sides together,
using ¼” seam allowances and matching corners at base of large triangle; take care not to stretch
bias edges. Repeat, using chainstitching, for remaining units; clip apart.
5) Finger-press seam allowances toward small triangle. Stitch a small triangle to other short side of
large triangle. Take care not to stitch a tuck in first seam. Repeat, using chainstitching, for
remaining units; clip apart.
6) Press seam allowances toward small triangles. Trim points.
7) Place two units right sides together, matching top of one unit to bottom of other, so large
triangles are pointing in the same direction. Stitch, with point of large triangle on top, to make
sure stitching goes through point. Repeat, using chainstitching, for remaining units; clip apart.
8) Stitch three units together. Press seam allowances toward bases of large triangles.
9) Stitch sashing to each side of blockset of three geese.
