We 䇾wood䇿 like you to meet
the new gymnasium!
We are blessed at St. Francis Xavier to have our gymnasium. Many of our neighboring parishes share compliments and even a
hint of envy of this space given its size and functionality! It affords the parish an opportunity to house many activities which build
community, support the active SFX Athletic Department, and also provide a multi-purpose space benefitting the arts and parishwide events. Given its importance and overall high usage, gymnasium enhancements were identified as a priority of the
campaign. As specific components of the gymnasium enhancements were being evaluated, there was a great deal of discussion
about what was the best surface to be used. Things that had to be considered included:
x
x
x
x
Practicality and safety - for all the many uses of the gymnasium;
Noise control measures - taking into account the many activities held in Joyce Hall, located directly under the gymnasium
Durability - given the floor is used for sports, plays, overflow Masses and other school and parish activities; and
Affordability - the Buildings and Grounds committee wanted to make sure that whatever surface was ultimately selected, it
would be done so in a responsible and appropriate manner.
We are pleased to announce that we will be installing a wood floor in the gymnasium!
Sound control measures will be utilized to substantially reduce the sound of bouncing balls, which will allow meetings and
activities to continue in Joyce Hall simultaneously to the practices and/or games held upstairs in the gym. Additionally, wood
floor options have been enhanced that make this surface more durable and user friendly to non-sport activities.
The St. Francis Xavier gymnasium will continue to play host to many sport and non-sport activities on a durable, affordable and
quieter wood floor. Many thanks to the Building and Grounds committee for looking at all aspects of this important decision and
coming up with a solution that will benefit all!
GO FALCONS!

One Dad’s Gratitude…
Family Bathrooms Coming to Joyce Hall and
the Gathering Space!
Four daughters, a wife and one me… 5 + 1= Outnumbered man in our household. I must be honest; I consider my minority status
a blessing!
One Sunday morning not too long ago, I took a look around during 10:30AM Mass. I began to notice that many other families
share this very same blessing. The second pew on the east transept side sits a family with four sons. Bringing up the gifts is a family
with three daughters. I think to myself what a unique and wonderful blessing to have so many families with same gender, multiple
children!
Fast-forward six days. I am standing in the middle of Joyce Hall at the Ice Cream Social. It’s 7:28 pm, my wife is elbow deep in
vanilla ice cream working as a scooper, my youngest daughter in my right arm needed a diaper change twenty-five minutes ago and
my oldest holding my left hand has whipped cream in her hair. As I did last Sunday at Mass – I took a look around. I spot the mom
of four sons; looks like her youngest is wearing on his shirt the cake he won from the cake walk and her oldest has “shared” his face
paint all over the leg of her jeans. We made eye contact, share a shrug and one thought bubble… “Sure wish I could take these kids
to the bathroom and clean up!”
I recently heard the brilliant news that upon completion of construction, Joyce Hall and the new Gathering Space will have Family
Bathrooms. Gone will be the days of babies sitting in diapers past their due date and kids going to bed with semi-real dairy products
matted into their hair. No longer will parents be soaking jeans overnight to remove smeared yellow and blue face paint!
Kidding aside, I am truly grateful for the addition of Family Bathrooms to Joyce Hall and the Gathering Space. We, members of the
St. Francis Xavier Parish, are a vibrant group celebrating all gatherings – whether it be practicing our faith or at an event in Joyce
Hall. The presence of Family Bathrooms loudly acknowledges the importance of gathering together as family under one roof.
Thank you St. Francis Xavier Parish for thoughtfully and generously taking care of our families. Once again, I consider myself
blessed!
