S A T E R .C Alsace Wine Trail O M A W M W .H P E A L D W E Sample walking route notes: Walking in Alsace, France This holiday follows the central part of the renowned Route du Vin (Wine Road), where practically every colourful village has its own vineyard and ruined castle. There are countless opportunities to taste wines along the way. The Alsatian vignerons are so proud of what they produce that they will insist you sample their whole range, while everyone enjoys a good chat. We find them really hospitable and charming. W The villages are spick-and-span and temptingly photogenic. Geraniums spill from window boxes and balconies, and the half-timbered buildings can be plastered in pastel colours, bright blue, apricot or red. Each one begins with an overview of the walk, along with advice on lunch options, and then describes the route in detail. Please note that the numbering of the days in these Notes refers to the standard itinerary as shown in the Brochure. Lunch You will need to set your GPS to: S Please note that the diagrams are just a visual aid and are not intended as a substitute for the published maps provided. Here is a key to the symbols used: Food / drink shop Bar / Cafe Restaurant € Bank / ATM .C Location Format=UTM UPS and Map Datum=WGS84 The unit should give a reading such as: E R Maps We supply the IGN maps 3718 OT ‘Colmar / Kaysersberg’ and 3717 ET ‘Sélestat / Ribeauvillé’, which are of the usual excellent IGN standard. Remember that the scale is 1:25,000, so if you are estimating distances it is 4cm=1km or 1cm=250m. Footpaths are marked on the map by a solid red line. However, as with all of our holidays, the Route Notes are detailed and our aim is that the walks can be done using them alone. 0735777 4761684 A T Finding Your Way GPS. We know that many keen walkers now have handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) units. If you have one, by all means take it. The newer editions of IGN maps are divided up by a blue grid into one kilometre squares. The gridlines are identified at the map edge by blue italic numbers, eg 4761. A W M W .H P E A L D W E There are often benches for resting and admiring the views, and nearly every village here has at least one auberge or gasthof or winstub, so finding a tasty, filling lunch and a long cool drink is seldom a problem. Pedometer If you are used to using a pedometer, by all means bring it. Distances should agree with your pedometer readings if you have set it correctly for walking on the flat. But, because of climbs and descents, our distances (and your pedometer readings) are often greater than actual kilometres walked - which, admittedly, makes us all feel good! The walking times given in these Route Notes and on signposts you will come across provide a general indication only and do not include stops for rests, looking at flowers, photography etc. O M The Walking The first four digits indicate the gridline and the final three show the number of metres which you are to the east or north of that line. Discrepancies Things change; routes alter, new paths are cleared, signs fall down . . . If you find any major errors in our Route Notes please let us know on your post-holiday Questionnaire so that we can update them. Wine tasting Hotel Surfaces We have used the convention: W Waymarkings The paths you take are easy to follow with excellent signposting, and using them in conjunction with these Route Notes ensures there is no chance of getting lost. Unless specifically mentioned, it is not necessary to look for waymarkings. Compass A compass is not essential, but we know that many guests are used to carrying one. Path Generally narrow, for walking or cycling only, and inaccessible to vehicles Track Unsurfaced, of vehicle width but suitable only for tractors or 4 x 4s Lane Surfaced but fairly narrow Road Surfaced with tarmac or concrete Headwater Holidays, The Old School House, Chester Road, Northwich, Cheshire CW8 1LE. Tel: 01606 720199 Email: [email protected] Web: www.headwater.com Sample walking route notes: Walking in Alsace, France General Information Equipment The Heat We always recommend walking boots – in particular we advise against walking sandals, as in some places it is loose and stony underfoot, and there may be sharp stones and tree roots sticking up. A word of caution - when it’s hot, serious walking should be started early. Don’t forget a sun hat, suncream and remember to take plenty of water with you. Our minimum recommendation is 1.5 litres per person per day. Please refer to the ‘All you need to know A-Z Guide’. Details of the places where you stay, and those written in capitals, are in the Hotels and Places section of the Alsace Regional Booklet. Here you will also find ideas for things to do and places to visit on your Stay Put days. A W M W .H P E A L D W E It is a good idea to take a telescopic walking pole or poles, which you can buy in outdoor shops. These are becoming increasingly popular, and can be collapsed and fastened to the outside of a rucksack when not needed. A pair of walking poles is particularly useful on descents and/or at the end of a long day, when they can be used to take the strain off your knees. .C S Weather can always be changeable, though as these walks are not at a particularly high level a sudden change of weather should bring only discomfort rather than any danger. Be aware that the temperature can drop suddenly, especially if it starts raining so don’t forget your waterproofs. It may be worth asking the hotelier before you set off if there have been any weather warnings. E R Walking Safety e! t u o eR n n o B A T Safety O M Also, we find it convenient to carry maps and Notes in a transparent, waterproof map holder which hangs round the neck or over the shoulder. There are many rules of walking safely - here are five: Plan your walk in advance, making sure that you have map, Notes etc 2 Check your equipment in advance – boots, clothing, suncream, water etc 3 Always keep an eye on the time and the weather conditions 4 Let the hotel know where you are going, and if you will be late back, notify them 5 In case of accident, the emergency phone number is 15. Today’s opening walk is a super introduction to the delightful villages of Alsace, taking in Turckheim, Niedermorschwihr, Katzenthal and Ammerschwihr before arriving at your hotel in Kaysersberg. The walk starts from the Place de la Republique in Turckheim. There is a leaflet available from the Tourist Office for a selfguided wander to discover the architectural heritage of this splendid little town. Kaysersberg Kientzheim € R Weiss Quartier des Fleurs Ammerschwihr Route du Vin O M A W M W .H P E A L D W E Today you need map IGN 3718 OT Colmar / Kaysersberg. There are cafés in Turckheim, and several shops for picnic supplies. Turckheim to Katzenthal Niedermorschwihr .C Katzental W At this junction take the second left, marked with a blue diagonal ‘X’ - this is not the public motor road. At the crest by the cross there is a lovely view of the village of NIEDERMORSCHWIHR nestling in the folds of the vineyards. Continue on down, now following the yellow triangles. Be sure to walk round this super village and admire the oriel windows. To leave, go to the lower end of the Rue Trois Epis and turn downhill by Vigneron Bernard Weinzorn still following yellow triangles. At the bottom turn right and then at the end of the houses go left up a surfaced road into the vineyards. This path winds round the contours of a vine-clad hill, giving excellent views of local villages, COLMAR, and (on a clear day) the Black Forest. From here Colmar may look just a modern city, but the picturesque old town in its centre is well worth a visit. Continue on this path into Katzenthal. E S Ingersheim Turckheim S Bear right and then left past the Caveau Turenne Restaurant (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). At the end of this street turn right and leave through the Porte du Brand Oltor, a 14C gate. At the road turn left and curve round the bend for 50m. Pass the shrine and turn right up the next path following the yellow triangle signs. On arriving at a road follow this to the right for 100m before branching left up a stony track through the vines. Bear right and then left on up to the road. There is an interesting information board here with welcome rocks to sit on. W E R Enter Turckheim through the arched gateway which leads into the town. When you have finished looking around, you leave by walking between the church and A Meyer et Fils Wine Merchants. N A T 4.5km / 1hr 25min Sigolsheim R Fecht Katzenthal to Kaysersberg 5.3km / 1hr 40min Once in the village turn right, go downhill and turn left at the church. At the junction go right into Rue D’Ammerschwihr and then left into an alleyway, turn right at the top of the stone steps. Go up into the vineyards again following the path marked with yellow triangles. After about a kilometre on the descent into AMMERSCHWIHR go acute left following the yellow triangles, then after 200m turn right. Walk down into the village. Although Ammerschwihr was largely destroyed by fire following the bombings of WWII, it has retained some interesting old buildings. To leave Ammerschwihr go all the way up the Grande Rue. At the Place des Jeux, go right and then immediately left. At the Tour des Bourgeouis (1534) bear left and continue in the shade of the trees past Mandres et Fils to the T-junction. The path winds along the contours through vineyards and woodland, with the villages of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim down on the right. After just over a kilometre take the split in the track leading downwards to Kaysersberg, following the blue ‘X’s and spots through the shady trees. A W M W .H P E A L D W E After emerging onto the N415 bear left and then right over the bridge. The Wolfgang Chapelle is perched up on a rock to the left. Now take any of the left turns into the centre of KAYSERSBERG. Much of this interesting village lies along the length of the main street, between the Hôtel de Ville and your exit from the village by the Rue de la Flieh. .C At Kaysersberg E R Day 3 O M Hôtel Constantin is situated off the main street along Rue de la Commanderie. S A T The Regional Booklet suggests things to see and do on your Stay Put day at Kaysersberg. You will notice the ruins of the 13C castle above the village and, if you are feeling energetic, it is but a short climb. To go up to it, cross the Hôtel de Ville square and go under a porchway. Follow the blue ‘X’ waymarks up the steps to the ruins from where there is a fine view of the town and surrounding countryside. It is even better if you climb the 112 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase. W It’s very easy to visit COLMAR by bus - it has a beautiful old town in the centre. The timetable and directions to the bus stop (which is nearby) are available from the Tourist Office. Headwater Holidays, The Old School House, Chester Road, Northwich, Cheshire CW8 1LE. There’s a steady climb to the Alexis Chapelle - take your time. St-Alexis Chapelle Today you again need map IGN 3718 OT Colmar / Kaysersberg. You can picnic today; the alternative is the auberge near to the Alexis Chapelle, open every day but Fridays. R Sembach Forêt Communale de Riquewihr Kaysersberg to St-Alexis Chapelle 5.3km / 1hr 50min S W After a further 200m bear right onto a very narrow path into the trees, again marked ‘St Alexis’. Take care - this path is easily missed as it leads off a left-hand bend in the track and is almost overgrown. Carry on upwards and cross another track to steps still waymarked with a yellow dot. Again carry on up and after a dog-leg left you emerge onto a broad stony track. Turn left and after 100m you reach both the Chapelle St Alexis (on map) and an auberge. We’ve been told by previous Headwater walkers that this is a pleasant little auberge - open every day except Friday, all season from 1200 to 2000 (although they have been known to stop serving at around 1345). You can get a drink, snack or something more substantial. The restaurant is very busy with the locals, so it’s worth making a booking at the weekends. O M .C E S Kaysersberg € A T Continue on the broad forest track for a kilometre. When the track hairpins left, bear off right into the woods onto a narrower path, also signed ‘St Alexis’. This is a steepish path through the pines with a stream on the left. After 400m you emerge onto a broad stony track and continue upwards. At the next junction bear left following the yellow spot waymarks - there is a shaded seat here. N W E R A W M W .H P E A L D W E To leave Kaysersberg go to the top of the main street, passing the Albert Schweizer Museum on your left. Follow the Rue de la Flieh, keeping the main part of the Hôtel des Remparts on your left. Follow the yellow spot waymarking for St Alexis and Riquewihr. Ignore the road on the left going across a stream and go uphill. After 700m bear left at a junction signed ‘St Alexis’. The houses are now left behind as you begin to enter wooded areas. There are fir, beech, chestnut, oak and fruit trees. After a steady climb of 1.5km the path splits; take the left branch to St Alexis (Variant Piétons). Riquewihr Forêt Communale de Mittelwihr R Toggenbach St-Alexis Chapelle to Riquewihr 5.1km / 1hr 30min From the auberge retrace your steps a short way and continue on upwards bearing left signed ‘Riquewihr’ and following blue ‘X’s. At the next fork go right along the Chemin de la Place Verte - Riquewihr is shown as being an hour from here. The path undulates gently through pine scented forest. After a kilometre branch left following the yellow spots and on meeting a wider track carry on right and then after 60m branch left down a narrow path through the woods. From here keep following the yellow spots for approximately 2.5km, descending steadily through the woods until you arrive at a road. Cross this to continue in the same direction towards Riquewihr. At the next road go straight on and through the arched gateway into RIQUEWIHR. Follow the cobbled main street down to the Hôtel au Cerf on the right, where you turn left down a narrow side street to the Hôtel á l’Oriel. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Vineyards’ Riquewihr is another popular location on the wine route, and an important wine growing centre. Its two Grand Crus are ‘Sporen’ and ‘Schoenenbourg’. O M .C E R W S For something a little different visit the Torture Museum situated in the Thieves Tower. It opens daily (1030-1300 and 14001800) and entry costs 2.50€. If visiting both a combined ticket costs 4€. A T A W M W .H P E A L D W E As you go through the impressive 15C Porte Supérieure, the cafés and restaurants in the main street, Rue du Général de Gaulle, are a great place to stop for refreshments, admire the architecture and soak up the atmosphere. There are two local museums which are worth a visit. The Local History Museum, the Dolder Museum, is currently closed for renovation but is expected to re-open over the summer. Opening times will then be every day in July and August from 1330 to 1800; Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays only in May, June and September. Entry costs 2.50€. Underfoot it alternates between tiny roads and stony tracks. W For lunch we suggest Ribeauvillé, where there is a good choice of restaurants and shops. From that point on the route is exposed and there is little shade, so make sure you have plenty of water. Today you still need map IGN 3718 OT Colmar / Kaysersberg. Riquewihr to Ribeauvillé 4.7km / 1hr 25min From the Hotel follow the cobbled street uphill leading north out of the village through the fortified gate (Dolder). After 100m fork right signed ‘Château de Reichenstein’. This road climbs gently between the vines. After a further 500m, at the road .C E R R Sembach junction, turn right over the stream and continue on up until you reach another junction. Here go left, signed ‘Hunawihr / Ribeauvillé’. This quiet and shady road climbs through orchards and mixed woodland. As it emerges into the open vineyards it becomes part of the Sentier Viticole des Grands Crus, and there is a splendid view of the steeple of Hunawihr church and part of Ribeauvillé over the fold in the hills. The road now descends steadily into the village of HUNAWIHR, where you turn right. A T Hunawihr O M A W M W .H P E A L D W E € The combined Catholic/Protestant church, with its fortified graveyard, is well worth a visit, while Winstub Suzel nearby offers a refreshing drink.
