To purpose in living,

Message to the Community
City of Lakes Waldorf School completed our 20th year in 2008-09. We stood strongly poised
for the next decade of growth in service to our educational mission. Throughout the year
we focused on building upon the strengths of our educational programs and faculty. Based
on our foundation of vibrant health, steady growth, and stability, we boldly moved ahead to
realize our dream of full use of the building we purchased in 1999 (an outcome of our first
capital campaign and with assistance from Rudolf Steiner Social Finance). We said goodbye
to Watershed High School and stepped out on a bridge that would lead from our past
towards our vision of the future.

Community Gifts and Achievements The children and community we serve, along with
our staff and teachers, bestowed many gifts and achievements on CLWS throughout the
school year. We had the privilege of educating 242 remarkable young people in our school
during this year. Our eighth grade class impressed us with their abilities throughout the
year. They offered an outstanding production of Cyrano de Bergerac and eighth grade
projects that included everything from animated films and chocolate-making to social
activism. They demonstrated their well-developed capacities to take on new challenges and
to pursue their interests to achieve a practical and artistic end. The younger members of
our student body continued to delight us with their questions, insight and creativity. The
children’s growth and learning served as inspiration for parents and staff to work together to
further the overall mission of the school.
School achievements included continued program growth and development that
resulted in a CLWS Curriculum Guide for grades 1- 8, strong staff and student retention
and continued development of a strong professional development program for our
teachers. We continued our efforts to build a full Eurythmy program by bringing in
two guest teachers who provided seven weeks of Eurythmy to children in Kindergarten
through Grade 8. Our middle grades program continued to flower as class teachers
provided guest blocks and brought individual areas of expertise in math, science and

language arts to other classrooms. At the end of the year, with the generous gift of a donor,
we were able to greatly enhance our Theater and Circus Arts program with the purchase
of a new “pipe and drape” and lighting board for our stage productions.
In partnership with our parent community, we continued to strengthen our school
policies and our communication tools. We revised and updated our school Media Policy
and our Discipline Policy. We also developed a comprehensive Sabbatical Policy, added
a health care benefit for hourly employees and Short Term Disability benefits for salaried
employees. We made significant strides in the development of a new website and
increased our outreach capacity as we entered the wide world of social media.
Community Development We also enjoyed building relationships with neighbors, local
partners and affiliated Waldorf schools to enhance student programs and organizational
learning and growth. Our development and outreach efforts resulted in the obtainment
of three grants in the 2008-09 school year. We received a $700 grant from the Emma
Foundation (for Movement and Games equipment), a $2,000 grant from the Orange
Thumb Project sponsored by Fiskar Tools (to support gardens in our redesigned Early
Childhood play yard) and a $50,000 grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management
Organization for the installation of a rain garden. A collaboration with Minneapolis

College of Art and Design students resulted in the completion of the first phase of a
project advising further relationship development with alumni, use of social media and
interviews with several CLWS alums.
Staffing Changes Before the year began, we said goodbye to Robert Bucher who returned
to California with his family after thirteen years in service to CLWS as a class teacher.
We also said farewell during the school year to Damaris Jackson, long-time Handwork
teacher, who returned to her home state of Indiana. We are grateful to both Robert and
Damaris for the wonderful and wise gifts they shared with our school and our students
over the years. In the fall, we welcomed Elena Orsak as our new String Ensemble Teacher
and Amber Van Cleave who was hired to replace Robert Bucher. Jeannine Ouellette
was granted a sabbatical year while continuing to serve on the College of Teachers and
stepping into the fifth grade classroom at the end of the school year.
Challenges and Growth Throughout the school year we anticipated the challenge
and the excitement of full occupancy of our building in 2009-10. Planning for the loss of
$185,000 of annual rental income from our long term tenant, Watershed High School
was particularly demanding in the face of other economic factors. Like schools and

non-profits around the country, we reviewed our budget expenses carefully and prioritized
the implementation of a broad scope of budget cuts. In every instance we sought to
minimize the impact on student programming as we planned for the coming year.
Our school community was of course affected by pervasive concern regarding the
world economy. During the school year we took active steps to sustain our enrollment
and encouraged open communication with families who faced a change in financial
circumstances. Our reenrollment numbers were strong and we were able to offer an early
childhood summer program for the first time.
As we completed our 20th year there were many signs of our entrance into a new era at
City of Lakes Waldorf School. As always, CLWS students led the way, as they continued to
learn and grow through activities of the head, heart and hands. With our participation in the
Twin Cities community, by raising our profile on the web, and through the achievements of
our current students and alumni, we reached into the world to demonstrate the incredible
value of an education at City of Lakes Waldorf School. Every day our teachers and students,
through their hard work, demonstrated the profound and joyous nature of an education that
is powerfully alive and carefully designed to meet the needs of the growing child. Thank you
for your continued engagement in the life of City of Lakes Waldorf School.
