Getting your bitch spayed

Going Home
Normally pets will be able to go home in the
afternoon the day after their operation as long as the
vet is happy that they no longer require treatment
with us. We encourage you to keep your dog as quiet
as possible for at least a week to let the wound heal.
We will also make an appointment for a free
post-operative check with a vet or nurse to assess the
wound and see if it is healing well.

Getting your
bitch spayed
Future diet
You will be offered a free nutritional consultation
with a veterinary nurse as it is very common for
bitches to gain weight after being spayed. Slightly
altering their diet can prevent this and this is
something which can be discussed in the
consultation.
When you have your dog
spayed you will receive
a £25.00 preventative
healthcare voucher which
can be redeemed against
vaccines, flea and worm
treatments and food.

Introduction
Pain relief & anaesthetic
Recovery
At London Road Veterinary Centre and Hollies
Clinic we know that it can be a worrying time
when your pet needs an operation, and deciding
whether to have them neutered requires a great
deal of thought. If you are not planning on using
your dog for breeding we recommend having her
spayed
We feel very strongly that all patients should receive
the highest level of appropriate pain relief. We give a
pre-operative dose of pain relief to ensure surgery is
pain free and for a smooth recovery.
Here at London Road we have special heated
recovery kennels where your dog will be constantly
monitored and given any further pain relief they
may need. When your dog is fully awake from her
operation she will be offered an appropriate
post-operative recovery food which helps her on
the road to recovery.
Our dedicated night staff are on hand to monitor
your pet. They can administer pain relief much
more quickly and efficiently than giving tablets at
home.
Benefits of spaying





Eliminates the risk of Pyometra (infection
of the uterus)
No unwanted pregnancies .
Eliminates risk of ovarian cancer .
Reduces risk of mammary tumours, which
bitches are very prone to in later life .
No unwanted seasons, which means they
can be exercised without the risk of attracting attention from male dogs.
Admitting your dog
As a practice we believe a great deal of care
should be taken throughout the whole process of
spaying.
When your dog is admitted she will be weighed
and given a full health check, where her
temperature will be taken and her normal
respiration rate and heart rate taken. This allows
us to calculate the tailor-made dose of
pre-medication.
A bitch spay is a more invasive operation than a
castration. Because we want the best for your dog
we keep all bitch spays in overnight to allow us to
restrict their movement and to give adequate
pain relief as and when required.
We use gold standard anaesthetic, the safest and most
effective available to induce them and maintain them
throughout the operation.
All patients will have an intravenous catheter gently
placed in their leg, this allows us easy access to
administer routine medication and emergency
treatment should they need it. The catheter is kept in
place throughout their stay and reduces the amount of
injections given under the skin, reducing any stress to
your dog
During the operation
Whilst the vet is operating your dogs nurse will be
constantly monitoring and recording their vital signs on
an anaesthetic record chart. The nurse can then adjust
the level of anaesthesia needed throughout the
operation. Monitoring constantly allows us to get an
early warning of any problems which may arise and
enables us to act on them quickly and efficiently.
Our sterile theatre
Please call us between 2.00-3.00pm
01553 773168 to get an update on your pet and to
arrange an appointment for them to go home the
following day.
We can also provide a surgical recovery vest which
is a hassle free alternative to the buster collar. The
vest protects the wound and is soft and light
weight. They are available to fit all sizes of dogs.
