2017 ALBERTA CHALLENGE MAY 3 - 7, 2017 OLDS3
Welcome
On behalf of Hockey Alberta and its Board of Directors, welcome to the 2017 Alberta
Challenge.
We would like thank the host committee and the community of Olds for the hard work
that has gone into planning this event, and the warm welcome extended to Hockey
Alberta, the participants, and the families who have travelled to watch the action. This is
our first year holding the Alberta Challenge in Olds, but we are well aware of the hockey tradition in the community,
which was on display two years ago when Olds hosted Hockey Alberta’s inaugural Peewee Prospects Cup.
The Alberta Challenge is a core Hockey Alberta development program. The focal point is our players – for the 2017
event female players born in 2002 and 2003. Regardless of experience, or size of community, these players have
the opportunity to try out for a spot at the Alberta Challenge, and to play the game they love at a high level.
Approximately 300 players started the selection process at zone camps in March. From that number, we have the
opportunity to watch the top 120 divided into six regional teams. Being selected to represent your region is a
significant accomplishment and honour. The Alberta Challenge gives you the opportunity to work with talented
players, and learn from experienced coaches and Team Alberta development staff.
As well, the Alberta Challenge involves many stakeholders who play key roles in ensuring a successful experience
for the players and all participants. For some of these stakeholders – such as our volunteer coaches, therapists,
directors of operations, and coach mentors – they are gaining experience and being evaluated for potential future
positions with Team Alberta or perhaps even Team Canada at regional and national competitions.
Hockey is a great game, allowing us to share a common bond and passion within a spirit of fair play and respect.
The friendships and experiences you gain while participating this week will stay with you as you progress in hockey
and throughout the rest of your life. Best wishes to everyone involved.
Terry Engen, Chair, Board of Directors
Hockey Alberta
On behalf of the Host Organizing Committee of the 2017 Alberta Challenge we would like
to welcome participants, staff, volunteers, officials and spectators to Olds!
We see this event as an incredible opportunity to assist in the growth and development
of players, coaches and officials in the female game, while showcasing the tremendous hospitality of Olds. We
especially want to thank all of our volunteers and sponsors that have dedicated time, energy and resources to
putting on a successful event.
We wish all participants the best of luck in this week’s event and hope that you all make new friends and new
memories over the next five days!
Sincerely,
Host Organizing Committee, 2017 Alberta Challenge

Alberta Challenge Rules
1. 1.
2.
The Alberta Challenge will be played under the official Hockey Canada Rules, with the exception of
regulations and/or rules adopted by Hockey Alberta.
Round Robin Games
a. Teams will play an unbalanced four-game round-robin schedule.
b. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss.
c. Tie games are not broken in round-robin play.
3. Tie Break procedure if teams are tied at the conclusion of round-robin to determine the team gaining the higher position.
a. If two teams are tied:
i.
The team with the most wins.
ii. The winner of the round-robin game between the two teams.
iii. The team with the best goal average in all round-robin games (total goals for divided by the total
goals for and against).
iv. The team with the least number of penalty minutes in all round-robin games.
v. The team that scored the first goal in the game between the two tied teams.
vi. A coin toss.
b. If three or more teams are tied:
i.
The team with the most wins in games among the tied teams.
ii. The team with the best goal average in games among the tied teams (total goals for divided by the
total goals for and against).
1. If all averages are different for the tied teams, the highest average gains first place; other
teams gain the position equivalent to their ranking. The tie break procedure will not go
back to two teams tied.
2. If two teams or more are still tied, the team that received the least number of minutes in
penalties in all round-robin games.
iii. A coin toss.
1. If three teams are tied, each team tosses a coin. The team that tosses the first “odd” coin gains
the highest position.
2. The two remaining teams will have a single coin toss.
4. Sunday’s Games:
a. Home team: team ranked higher in the round robin standings.
b. Each team is allowed one 30-second time out per game (including overtime).
c. If score is tied after regulation time they will play a 10-minute sudden-victory 4-on-4 overtime period. If
the score is still tied the teams participate in a shootout.
i.
Home team shoots first.
ii. Teams will assign three shooters per team.
iii. After three shooters, if the score is still tied:
1. Each team identifies a new shooter and the shootout continues with a sudden victory format.
2. If both teams score, identify another player each and continue.
3. If one team scores, and the other misses, the game is over.
iv. All eligible players (excluding goaltenders) will shoot before a player takes a second turn. A player
with unexpired time in a penalty after the overtime period is not eligible.
d. If either team declines to play overtime or the shootout, it will be a loss for that team.
