Birth of a Country: Monday, 10/4, 4:30-6:00 p.m. in time
for Fall Holiday Celebrations including Columbus Day,
Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving! Bring these historic events
to life for your students using rich web resources. Content
materials, printables, lesson plans and much more,
appropriate for grades K-8.
The Monkey’s Paw: Tuesday, 10/5, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. In this
well-known story written by W. W. Jacobs, tragedy occurs
when wishes are granted. You will receive two PowerPoint
presentations for this story: an unabridged version for older
students and a simpler version to use with younger students
(ages 9 – 12). This study will acquaint students with the
development of plot and a variety of literary techniques.
The Signalman: Wednesday, 10/6, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Written by Charles Dickens, a phantom figure repeatedly
warns the signalman of impending disaster. You will receive
two PowerPoint presentations for this story: an unabridged
version for older students and a simpler version to use with
younger students (ages 9 – 12). This study will acquaint
students with the development of plot and a variety of
literary techniques.
Student Teams and Technology: Tuesday, 10/12, 4:30 –
6:00 p.m. Watch your students become engaged,
cooperative learners, involved in a variety of online projects
that span all areas of the curriculum. These projects give
you a chance to collaborate with other teachers, and your
students the opportunity to join the world-wide community
of learners.
The Phantom Coach: Wednesday, 10/13, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Hitch a ride on “The Phantom Coach,” written by Amelia B.
Edwards. You will receive two PowerPoint presentations for

Kid Pix and Creativity: Monday, 10/18, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Learn how to use this popular program with your students in
creative writing assignments, illustrations, and slideshows.
Discover a variety of lesson plans that incorporate KidPix
into daily learning.
Native American Legend: Tuesday, 10/19, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
“Where the Girl Saved Her Brother” told by Strange Owl to
Richard Erdoes. The story is a retelling of the Battle of the
Rosebud through the Native American point of view. This
study will acquaint students with the development of plot
and a variety of literary techniques. Also included is a
PowerPoint slide show that illustrates events that occur in
the story.

Blogging: Monday, 10/25, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Discover this amazing and easy online journaling
tool. A simple and free way of posting your
homework online, communicating schedules, test
dates, notes, classroom events and more with
students and parents. Also, learn ways your
students can "blog" and create an online journal,
where students can comment or add to each
other's work. An excellent method of
communication!

The web provides limitless resources for students
in grades five through eight. Learn about the best
of the best in language arts, math, science and
social studies, and enrich your curriculum with
technology.
Native American Award-Winning Essay: Wednesday, 10/27, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. “Blue Winds Dancing” by Thomas S.
Whitecloud. This story deals with a young Native American’s loneliness for his home, family, and the Indian way of life.
This study will acquaint students with the development of plot and a variety of literary techniques. Also included is a
PowerPoint slide show that illustrates events that occur in the story.
Technology and the Special Needs Student: Monday, 11/1, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Technology provides methods to address
the needs of all types of students. Discover tools available online for finding out your students’ various learning styles,
and gain a better understanding of how to address the needs of the many different learners in your classroom.
Participate in simulations of the learning experience for students with various learning disabilities. (Addresses NCLB
requirements for special education professional development.)

Holiday Classic II: Wednesday, 11/3, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote. The narrator of this
delightful tale has fond memories of several childhood years. This study acquaints students with the development of
plot and a variety of literary techniques. Also included is a PowerPoint slide show that beautifully illustrates events that
occur in the story.
Web 2.0 Part I: Tuesday, 11/9, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. The World Wide Web abounds with interactive
applications that extend beyond information delivery. Discover apps that promote creativity and enrich
classroom instruction across the curriculum. Learn more about using these apps in projects in Web 2.0
Part II on 3/22/11.
Winter Wonderland: Wednesday, 11/10, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Let’s explore some books and activities that are sure to
entertain children during those cold winter months. In this workshop you will receive some PowerPoint slide shows
that illustrate “The Night Before Christmas” and a delightful story called “The Long Stocking.” We will also visit some
other well-known classic winter tales. If you have a flash drive, please bring it.
Winter on the Web: Wednesday, 11/17, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Snowflakes, holidays, crafts, celebrations: It’s all here, just in
time to bring in the season! Cross-curricular activities related to this wonderful time of year to enhance your winter
lessons.
Standardized Test Practice: Wednesday, 11/17, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. A wealth of resources exist online for you and your
students to develop strategies, review concepts, and gain confidence prior ISATs, Terra Novas, and high school entrance
exams. Learn where to find them here!
Wikis for Teachers and Students: Monday, 1/24, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Discover how to utilize wikis to connect with
students and parents, share information and opinions, and engage your students in online discussion. Learn how to be
on top of the latest trends in educational technology in this workshop.
Exploring Children’s Literature: Tuesday, 1/25, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Let’s look at books written by great children’s
authors including Jan Brett, Marc Brown, and more. We will learn about the authors, explore websites, discover
coloring pages, bookmarks, games, and a variety of other activities. If you have a flash drive, please bring it.
Learning with Dr. Seuss: Wednesday, 1/26, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. This workshop is designed to help make the study of
poetry fun. Lessons in social behavior, language arts, science, and other subjects are also included. We’ll visit a variety
of websites, learn some new activities, and play some interactive games. If you have a flash drive, please bring it.
Google Tools: Monday, 1/31, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Google is a perfect way to search the web, but did you know it is filled
with amazing tools which can be incorporated right into your classroom curriculum? Learn tips for successful searching
and turn ordinary research into an extraordinary experience.
Create a Jeopardy Game: Tuesday, 2/1, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.Visit some websites that include Jeopardy games designed by
other teachers, plus receive two templates and step-by-step instructions for creating your own Jeopardy games. These
games can be adapted for all subjects and ages. If you have a 1GB flash drive (or larger), please bring it. Basic
knowledge of PowerPoint recommended.
Poetry in Music: Wednesday, 2/2, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Are you looking for a way to bring excitement into the study of
poetry? Then this is the class for you. Using the lyrics to popular music, students learn about rhyme scheme, sound
devices, and a variety of literary techniques. Not only will you receive an assortment of classroom-tested material, but
also a PowerPoint presentation with 30 slides that feature lyrics from the Beatles.
Exciting Multimedia Presentations with PowerPoint (2007 version): Monday, 2/7, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Explore this
presentation program to create slideshows for teacher or student presentations. Learn the skills needed to turn a
traditional project into an exciting presentation using Internet graphics, animations and transitions.
Create Interactive Computer Games: Tuesday, 2/8, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Visit some websites that include interactive

The Drummer Boy of Shiloh: Wednesday, 2/9, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Written by Ray Bradbury, this classic Civil War story
centers on a drummer boy who is facing his fears of partaking in an upcoming battle. This story acquaints students with
Civil War history, the development of plot, and a variety of literary techniques. Also included is a PowerPoint
presentation that illustrates the story. Recommended for Grades 4 and up.
Introduction to Microsoft Publisher: Tuesday, 2/15, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Discover the many attractive documents that
can be easily created using this wonderful publishing program, including newsletters, brochures, postcards, calendars,
and much more. Learn how pre-designed layouts and a wide assortment of graphics can help you make professional
looking documents!
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge: Wednesday, 2/16, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Written by Ambrose Bierce, this story
centers on a southern planter who is about to be hanged by the Union Army. This study acquaints students with the
development of plot and a variety of literary techniques. Also included is a PowerPoint presentation that beautifully
illustrates the story. Recommended for Grades 6 and up.
Advanced PowerPoint Techniques (2007 version): Tuesday, 2/22, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. This workshop goes beyond the
basics, and presents looping, timing, incorporating video, animation and web-based resources, creating a web page in
PowerPoint and a variety of new applications for PowerPoint in the classroom.
Excel as a Teacher Tool and for Student Learning (2007 version): Tuesday, 2/22, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Discover the
basics of this popular spreadsheet program, Microsoft Excel. Learn how to enter and sort data for classroom recordkeeping, and help students generate line, circle and bar graphs.
The Highwayman: Wednesday, 2/23, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. This classic poem, written by Alfred Noyes, tells the story of a
nameless highwayman who is in love with the landlord’s daughter, Bess. This study includes classroom-tested material
that acquaints students with the development of plot, poetic elements, and a variety of literary techniques. Also
included is a PowerPoint presentation that beautifully illustrates the poem.
Technology Enhanced Reading Strategies for Students with Learning Disabilities: Tuesday, 3/1, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Technology can making the process of reading become multisensory, helping students who struggle. Learn about webbased resources for reading, spelling, phonics, and understanding word meanings. Discover methods and tools for
multi-sensory learning of reading – help students stay enthused and on task, reduce frustration and be successful.

Microsoft Word as a teacher tool. Learn how to create an appealing document, utilize columns, bullets, tables, clipart
and more!
The Open Window: Tuesday, 3/8, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. by H. H. Munro (Saki). In this well-told tale, Saki’s wit is at the
height of its power in this story of a spontaneous practical joke played upon a visiting stranger. This study acquaints
students with the development of plot and a variety of literary techniques. Also included is a skit and a PowerPoint
slide show that illustrates events that occur in the story.
Word for Teachers – Intermediate (2007 version): Wednesday, 3/9, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Continue learning advanced
Word techniques by creating lesson plan templates and other classroom documents. Discover tools that will help you
more efficiently manage files and create attractive documents. Prerequisite: Word for Teachers - Introduction or
equivalent expertise.
Understanding CPDUs and Certificate Renewal: Tuesday, 3/15, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Participants will establish their
own ECS accounts on the ISBE Website, and learn about the various activities that earn CPDUs and can be counted
toward teaching certificate renewal. This workshop provides step-by-step directions on entering credits and renewing
the certificate.
Word for Teachers – Advanced (2007 version): Wednesday, 3/16, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Learn how to add tables and
borders, create footnotes, make mailing labels, and utilize the many language functions to help your students (and
yourself!) become better writers.
Web 2.0 Part II: Tuesday, 3/22, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. The web is no longer simply a method of delivering
information. It provides wonderful tools and applications for interactivity and exchange of information.
Learn how to incorporate some of these tools into classroom projects. (Completion of Web 2.0 Part I on
11/9/10 recommended, but not required).
