Fifteen teams entered the competition with a combination of new and present bowlers teamed together. With the trial against Glenbrook washed out the day before, it was great to see the Toongabbie greens still running at a good pace. Congrats to Tiger and Matt for their hard work over the summer. With reigning Fours Champion Stewart Bills gaining a 1st round bye, he was confident of back to back titles as he was teamed with mate Barry “BJ” Jenkins. The morning games were intriguing with David Banasiak against Keith Smith, Brett “Cyril” Hughes against Gerald Berkenmeyer, Bill Lawrence against Adrian “Battman” Batt, Paul Harper against Cameron McClure, Ken Freeland against Jim McKenzie, Nick “Boo Boo” Redcliffe against Harry Arthurs and Alan “Chook” Williamson against new bowler Ben Richards. Results were Banasiak 22 def Smith 21 Hughes 24 def Berkenmeyer 9 Lawrence 18 def Batt 13 Harper 22 def McClure 15, Freeland 22 def McKenzie 12 Redcliffe 29 def Arthurs 6 Richards 18 def Williamson 16 The afternoon games started with light drizzle falling and colder, windy conditions. Was it summer or the middle of winter? Luckily the cloud cleared early and players were able to play in reasonable conditions. With semi-final spots up for grabs, the quality of games increased with Hughes against Banasiak, Harper against Lawrence, Redcliffe against Freeland and Richards against Jenkins. Hughes against Banasiak was a shot for shot game early on with Toonie favourite PJ on fire for Hughes. But the new Les “Wicky” Neich was on show. A Local Council will be changing Wicks Oval into Brett Hughes Park. When required Hughes received the wick required to go onto a 25- 15 victory. Harper and Lawrence were in a tight, low scoring game with Lawrence leading 17-11 with 3 ends to play. Needing 3 on the last, a bowl each from Peter Dive, Garry “Junior” Harper and Kyle “Yogi” Martinez allowed “Harps” a 18-17 last end victory. Nick “Boo Boo” Redcliife’s team were the outstanding team of the morning and this continued in the afternoon with a smashing 27-5 victory over Ken Freeland and again playing only 17 ends. Fantastic lead bowls by James Killick was a feature of the days play for this team. With a last end victory in the morning game, Ben Richards, the favourites for this year’s title, was against the team consisting of last years champion, Stewart Bills. This was a high quality game with the score being tight all the way. With umpire Paul “Teach” Leonarder wanting to foot fault new bowler Don Strickland on every delivery, the Richards team was under intense pressure. But on the 2nd last end Richard played an enormous bowl to lead the team to a 2119 victory. On Saturday, 2 fantastic semi-final games are installed from 9.30am Shane Partridge, PJ, Michael Lombardi and Brett Hughes v Peter Dive, Garry Harper, Kyle Martinez and Paul Harper 12.30pm James Killick, Graeme Callaghan, Todd Lonergan and Nick Redcliffe v Victor Aruajo, Matt Smith, Don Strickland and Ben Richards 9.30am The Final will be played on Saturday 16 February at 12.30 as part of the Pennant “Bonding Day”.
