Art Lesson Plans Week of September 23-27, 2013 Primary- K-1 Jim Dine Hearts- Warm and Cool Color Families Students will learn about pop artist Jim Dine and then about warm and cool color families. They will then create colorful Dine inspired hearts using warm and cool colors. Students will use a heart to trace around and practice their tracing skills. They will trace around the heart in black crayon and then color the inside with water soluble wax pastels in either warm OR cool color tones. They will then color around the heart in the opposite color family and use water to bend their colors together and give the piece a painted look. 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify and use the elements of shape and color. Upper Primary- 2-3 Native American Art –Parfleche Bags Students will learn about native American plains indian art called parfleche. We will look at symmetry and geometric design and pattern used by the plains tribes. Students will use construction paper to create a parfleche bag and decorate it with symmetrical geometric designs using construction paper crayons. We will then add raffia for fringe and buttons for flair! 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify and use the elements of line, shape, color and the principles of repetition and pattern. 27.A.1b Identify how the arts contribute to communication, celebrations, occupations and recreation. 27.B.2 Identify and describe how the arts communicate the similarities and differences among various people, places and times. Intermediate- 4-5 Salvador Dali- Elephants-Surrealism Students will learn about the art of Salvador Dali and what surrealism is. Students will create a surrealist picture based on Salvador Dali’s “Elephants” by drawing, painting and cutting out an elephant with extralong legs and gluing it to a surrealist background that they have painted such as the barren landscapes found in Dali’s work. Students will then create a howdah or elephant carriage and use a variety of materials to decorate their pictures. 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- dimensional space, value, form, the principles of rhythm, unity, balance, proportion, and composition. 25.A.3d Visual Arts: contrast, emphasis and movement 26.B.2d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving designing and sketching. 27.B.2 Identify and describe how the arts communicate the similarities and differences among various people, places and times. Middle Level- 6,7,8 Relief Sculptures- Clay Tiles Middle level students will learn about high relief sculptures, bas-relief sculptures and intaglio relief sculptures. They will then create a clay tile using one of the above mentioned relief choices and a variety of clay tools. 26.B.3d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create 2- and 3-dimensional works of art that are realistic, abstract, functional and decorative. 26.A.3e Visual Arts: Describe how the choices of tools/technologies and processes are used to create specific effects in the arts.
