Did You Know These Interesting Facts About San Clemente?
For a City that just reached its 88th birthday in February, there’s a whole lot of history in our Spanish Village
by the Sea. From time to time I’ll be sharing some facts about San Clemente with you and what better time
than now to get started. Did you know these interesting facts about San Clemente?

The City of San Clemente turned 88 years old in February.
The City of San Clemente was the second city in South OC (just one year after the City of Laguna Beach)
to officially incorporate as a general law city.
The City of Yorba Linda wooed President Nixon to have his presidential library in Yorba Linda, his birthplace. The San Clemente City Council had been working with Nixon to build his presidential library at
Marblehead Coastal.
The former home of city founder Ole Hanson was slated to become a Mexican restaurant before an
anonymous donor gave $1M to restore the home into a cultural center, the Casa Romantica Cultural
Center & Gardens.
Center for Natural Land Management donation boxes have been approved by the Planning Commission
and will soon be addressed by the City Council. The boxes are being proposed by the non-profit CNLM
who engages with land trusts, conservation organizations, public agencies, developers and other land
managers that require expertise with open space management.
Camp Pendleton training activities may sometimes disturb residents in San Clemente, especially new
residents who may not be accustomed to large-scale artillery training periods that prepare our military
to support national defense and strategic objectives. Though this is not the City’s jurisdiction, please
know that Camp Pendleton makes every effort to publicize its training activities in advance and the City
assists in this effort to notify residents. Current noise generating report provided by Camp Pendleton
can be found on our city website.
Cities continue to experience problems as a result of Prop 47 which was passed by voters in 2014 and
lowered the threshold to prosecute drug and theft charges from felony to misdemeanor and resulted in
the release of more criminals. This has caused a spike in crime rates, which is not unique to San Clemente. For year over year comparison, all south OC cities experienced an uptick Part I crime rates.

Much of the end of the San Clemente Pier was destroyed and lost in the 1983 storms. The city rebuilt the section in 1985 at a cost of $1.4M to repair with a higher end section and polyethylenecoated steel piles.
Every year the City spends about $425,000 to maintain the pier from its harsh ocean environment
—moneys that used to come from the Redevelopment Agency Fund which are no more since the
State Legislature approved the dissolution of RDA’s. Now, moneys for repair must come out of the
General Fund which is the same fund that pays for police, potholes and parks.
San Clemente lifeguards keep watch over beachgoers on most of San Clemente’s beaches, but did
you know that State lifeguards control lifeguarding up to Lost Winds?
San Clemente itself was named after San Clemente Island. The island was given its name on November 25, 1602 by the Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino. He named it San Clemente in honor of
Saint Element whose feast day is November 23.
The City Council just approved $450,000 for the Sand Nourishment which is an ongoing effort to
keep sand on our beaches for the enjoyment of our residents, visitors and to benefit tourism, which
helps our local economy. To learn more about the project, check out our You Tube video featuring
City Councilman Tim Brown at https://youtu.be/Z8Kg7mIo-R8
I hope you’ve enjoyed these interesting facts about San Clemente. From the numerous Facebook pages out there that are relative to San Clemente, this shows we are a community that cares about issues,
concerns, and each other. Social media has served as a great tool for connecting members of our community with issues, however in some instances, I’ve seen information be posted that neglects the facts,
and then gets willingly shared by others without verifying. If ever any doubt about the facts, give your
City a call at (949) 361-8200 or email me at [email protected].

April is National Volunteer Month
On April 23rd there will be volunteer groups assisting our City with much needed maintenance projects.
As part of his Eagle Scout project, Abraham Dent coordinated with City staff to paint the pier railings. Our City
maintenance division will be providing the supplies and along with a few close friends, this future eagle scout will
be providing the labor.
On the other side of the freeway, on the same date, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located on
Vista Montana will be shepherding their annual volunteer project. This group will be undertaking the re-planting
of the slope at Marblehead Park.
These are only a couple of volunteer projects happening this month. We are fortunate to have volunteers
throughout the year help keep San Clemente looking first-rate.
To all the volunteers ….we send a heartfelt THANK YOU!
Contact Maintenance Services Division at 949-361-8317 if you are interested in coordinating a volunteer project
