SUBJECT:
GRADES 11 & 12 PRESCRIBED LITERATURE 2007 – 2009
Attached please find the lists of literature texts for the localised Namibia Senior Secondary
Certificate syllabuses for examination in 2007 to 2009. These lists should be read in
conjunction with the relevant syllabuses, which contain detailed information on the way in
which Literature will be assessed as well as the minimum amount of literature to be studied.
African Languages teachers should be alerted to the significant changes that were made to the
Literature paper (Paper 3) at both Ordinary and Higher levels. This paper will now consist of
two parts: Part 1 will be a written paper (20 marks) and Part 2 an oral discussion (15 marks).
The written paper will be set externally, marked at the school and sent to DNEA for

moderation. The oral discussion will follow soon after the marking of the written paper. This
is not a duplication of the written paper, but an in-depth discussion that will examine literary
aspects on one of the three texts (genres) that the learners had chosen in the written paper (see
the syllabus). The oral part will be recorded and required samples thereof will be sent to
DNEA for moderation. All learners (full-time and part-time) will do both parts of the
literature paper.
The languages are listed in alphabetical order and printed on separate sheets for ease of
reference and filing. In languages not listed here, like English and Afrikaans Second
Language Ordinary Level as well as Foreign Language German Ordinary Level, there is no
Literature Paper.
The following Addendums are attached to this letter:
