PILGRIM LUTHERAN CHURCH 44 CHAPEL ROAD – KENMORE, NY 14217 (716) 875-5485 A Congregation in Mission, Community and Service PILGRIM’S PROGRESS OCTOBER 2012 PASTOR: Rev. Ben Eder EDITOR: Mary Werth ASSOC. EDITOR: SUNDAY SCHOOL: 9:00 AM TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY: 9:30 AM WORSHIP: 10:00 AM “God’s Changeless Word” Feelings come and feelings go, And feelings are deceiving; My warrant is the Word of God — Naught else is worth believing. Though all my heart should feel condemned For want of some sweet token, There is One greater than my heart Whose Word cannot be broken. I’ll trust in God’s unchanging Word Till soul and body sever, For though all things shall pass away, His Word shall stand forever! —Martin Luther “Faith is a living and unshakable confidence, a belief in the grace of God so assured that a man would die a thousand deaths for its sake.” —Martin Luther “We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.” ---Martin Luther “So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: “I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also!” ---Martin Luther “This grace of God is a very great, strong, mighty and active thing. It does not lie asleep in the soul. Grace hears, leads, drives, draws, changes, works all in man, and lets itself be distinctly felt and experienced. It is hidden, but its works are evident.” ---Martin Luther SUNDAY SERVER SCHEDULE OCTOBER 2012 DATE OCT 7 OCT 14 OCT 21 OCT 28 Reader Wes Wiers Karen Smith Mary Werth Ushers Peggy Clark & Jarrod Clark Roger Watkins & Pat Watkins Communion Assistant Harris Bartz Naomi George & Harvey Caldow Gary Smith Carolyn Alessi Eric Fellner & Mike Confer Frank Alessi George Alessi Frank Alessi Gabrielle Bessey Kathy Rodgers Roberto Diaz Sue Holway Harriet Kirsch Oct. 3 Oct. 10 Oct. 22 Oct. 23 Oct. 10 Oct. 10 Oct. 11 Oct. 17 Oct. 18 Oct. 27 Harris & Jennifer Bartz Bob & Doris Neumann Jack & Helen Hambridge Harvey & Ruth Caldow (If you want your birthday and/or wedding anniversary in the newsletter, please contact the editor.) VOTERS MEETING On September 23rd, a Voters Meeting was held after the service. After the previous minutes were read and various reports were presented, the main subject of the meeting was getting a digital sign to replace the current one. A representative from the NAS Sign Company explained the features, warranties and service covered in his proposal. The cost will be between $15,000 and $16,000. It can be run by anyone at the computer so it can be programmed to display a variety of messages, including any events that we have coming up. A couple of pictures were passed around so we could see what it would look like. The letter color will be amber and the background will be black. It can be installed between the existing brick pillars of the current sign. After the representative had answered our questions, he left and we then had a discussion regarding the proposal. When we had completed a written vote, the new sign was approved. One last item: it was announced that George Alessi had bought a house! He moved in on September 21st. Of course, someone had to ask which realtor he had used and when the housewarming party would be held. Congratulations to George on acquiring his own home! The meeting was adjourned and we closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Can you top this? When my sister was about 3, my mom overheard her talking with a neighborhood friend. “My dad works for an insurance agency!” proclaimed the other girl. Clearly pleased with her status as a pastor’s kid, my sister responded haughtily, “Well, my dad works for God!” —Heidi Mann ESTHER CIRCLE The Esther Circle met on Monday, 9/16, and welcomed Pauline Kalenik from Generations Antiques, who spoke about the history of jewelry and showed us examples of the different materials and styles of jewelry through the last 2 centuries. After her presentation, we held our business meeting. Pat Watkins reported that $132 has been donated at fellowship hours for Joplin, MO tornado relief. That figure represents donations through August, and we will continue to collect donations for Joplin until the end of the year. Thank you to Helen Hambridge for collecting and counting mites for the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She has counted many pennies over the past few years. Mary Werth has agreed to take over this task, so please give her your pennies in the future. Helen will continue to collect stamps and Dash’s grocery tapes. We will have a Book/Bake Sale here at church on October 27 and 28. Please look through your books at home and consider donating novels, non-fiction, children’s, self-help, and cook books to this sale. A box for these books will be downstairs throughout the month. We ask that your books be in good, clean condition. Watch the bulletin board for more information about this sale. Other future projects are a clothing/accessory collection for Royal Threads (see separate article about this) and a Cookie Exchange in December. Meeting dates for the following months are October 8, November 12 and December 10. We always welcome new members! If you have any ideas, suggestions, or questions, please contact Sue Holway (7733625) or see Pat Watkins. The Royal Threads Thrift Shop is located on the grounds of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. It is run by the Friends of BPC. Anyone who is receiving mental health services can shop there, whether they are inpatient or outpatient. The shop collects donations of gently-used clothing for men and women. Items include shirts, pants, blouses, skirts, dresses, coats, jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, shoes, boots, belts, scarves, purses and jewelry. They mostly need anything that is size 14 or larger. A tax deduction letter will be provided to anyone who requests one. Just give your name and address to Mary Werth. The BPC Public Information Office will send out the letters. Thank you in advance for your support. In my many years at BPC as a cashier, I have seen many clients who have proudly showed items that they purchased there. It means a great deal to them to buy something just for themselves.
