From the Board President
I am proud to report that the California Automobile Museum had another great year,
thanks to the hard work of the Volunteers and the Staff.
Led by Board member Mark Glover, the Special Exhibit of all things Italian
“Automobilia” wound up in early 2011 and we kicked-off “WUNDERCARS!” a
celebration of German cars. The exhibit of each of the four featured marques seems
to be better than the last, with VW closing the show this summer with a great VW car
gathering on March 18th. I can’t wait!
It seems appropriate this year to mention the names and hard work of some of the
museum volunteers although we could not mention all in this address if it was 10
pages long. Board Member Larry Stiver along with the hard work of many committee
members and Curator Nathan Smith have continued to revamp and improve our Collection and display of cars in the
current building and are beginning to conceptualize our displays in a new facility.
Board member and Docent Council leader Ken Jordan deserves tremendous credit for tightening up our Docent
procedure and how could we mention Docents without thanking “The Ol’ Schoolmaster” Bill Millard. Board member
Kim Nelson not only teaches in the Docent class but volunteers on several committees and has agreed to lead the
CAM Cruise this year. Board Secretary Dave Felderstein also volunteers on several committees but has been especially
pro-active in increasing the number of students visiting the museum as Education Committee Chair.
Your Treasurer Keith Tronson is much appreciated for his insightful comments and helping us keep on track with our
finances, which was a challenge this year. Mike Hess claims that he doesn’t know how it happened, but as
Membership Chair, the museum had an unprecedented increase in the number of members in an economically
challenged 2011. The dynamic duo of Board member Bob Tarczy and Vice-President Al Buescher are always there to
volunteer for events and whatever else that is needed, including Bob chairing the Trips and Al Chairing Revenue
Development. Carl Stein has played an important role in enhancing our Car Sales activities this year, putting in
hundreds of hours to help our able Salesperson, Art Osby.
And we are looking for great things from new Board members Mike Ritenour and Jerry Godfrey who are already
helping out on committees while they find their niches.
There is no way to overlook the valuable contributions of our unsung heroes, the volunteer Docents, those who serve
on the Road Crew, help keep our cars running and clean and just generally are always there to help, including working
Autorama just this past weekend. It is always fun to see them at our booth at the shows.
Last but certainly not least, Staff deserves recognition. Olessya Zhuk keeps our office on track and is our longest
employee, Randy Masterson has somehow figured out how to reduce the roof leaks with no money, Hallie Morris’s
Events became the biggest revenue stream in 2011 and Mario and his crew from InAlliance are invaluable. But the
heart of the museum lies with our Executive Director, Karen McClaflin who ably herds all of us cats to a better year,
every year.
Thank you to all of the staff, volunteers and you, the members/owners of the museum.
Sincerely,
Joe Hensler, Board President

From the Executive Director
A century ago, the typical traveler would start their car with a
hand crank, drive with their steering wheel on the right side,
heat bricks to put in the bottom of the open-bodied car to keep
their feet warm, climb steep hills in reverse if the gas tank was
low, and bounce and bump at about 35 (20 hp) mph along dirt
roads to get to their destination.
Today, we cruise along the freeways at around 70 mph with our
air conditioning or heated seats keeping us comfortable, while
we listen to our iPods in stereo and chat (via bluetooth, of
course) on our cell phones. We consult the GPS to get to our destination and trust our seatbelts and airbags to
preserve our lives in an emergency. We’ve come a long way baby!
This year, as the Museum celebrates 25 years of sharing the evolution of the automobile with the public, we can
certainly say we’ve come a long way baby, as well! It has been a pleasure to serve as Executive Director for these 5+
years and see the growth the Museum has achieved. Some milestones for 2011 include:
Increasing school tours by 70%
Moving the CAM Car Cruise to Fulton Avenue where we had over 300 classic cars and 3000 spectators
Edward Towe’s homecoming on Founders’ Day where he got a ride in the 1903 Model A
Record-setting car sales and rental events
I’d like to close by sharing some of the comments that our visitors have communicated to us, which is even more
telling than me reporting all our latest statistics:
There were interactive sections to entertain the non-car savvy. There were a lot of photo opportunities for children and
the young at heart in various cars. You can get a free tour from any of the very nice men in blue vests, who really do
know a lot of interesting tidbits about the various cars.
-Christina
Just held our office xmas party here last week and everything was perfect! We had about 80 last minute guests arrive
and the staff at the museum didn't skip a beat! Very friendly and helpful! This is our 2nd year having our xmas party at
the museum, and I have a feeling it's going to be a tradition now!
-Miss M
For people who enjoy cars, this would be your little piece of heaven. Huge display of cars, more than I thought there
would be to be honest. This makes for a great date idea. The row of Mustangs was amaaaazzzzing,
-Elizabeth
What an incredible place to spend an afternoon, or to hold an event! I got lost in the many rooms of classic and exotic
cars, motorbikes, Automobilia and other memorabilia. The gift shop has all kinds of goodies for a car enthusiast like me!
-Cindy
As the Executive Director of the California Automobile Museum, I am proud of what we achieved over the past year
and am pleased to be able to share our accomplishments with you. This report reflects the support and hard work of
generous donors, devoted volunteers, and dedicated staff members.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve with you,
