RESTORE Therapy pg. 2 ADMINISTRATOR’S NOTE By Beth Totheroh From “Everything You Wanted to Know About Your Nursing Home Stay But Were Afraid to Ask,” by Eleanor Feldman Barbera, PhD, psychologist in long-term care. For most people, the shared quarters of a nursing home requires leaving most of their stuff behind. This can be challenging, especially if you didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to belongings acquired over the course of a lifetime. Let yourself acknowledge and grieve this loss and also give yourself time to adjust. Keep in mind, however, that you are more important than anything you accumulated along the way. You still have you. It’s worth the effort to add a few homey touches to your room. You’ll feel better in a room that’s more personal, and it will give the staff a chance to see you as a full and complete person, and to get to know you. A room can hold the basics, and yet it can also hold so much more if you let it. I love walking into rooms that give me a sense of the resident’s life, filled with photos and mementos. While your choices depend on Resident Spotlight pg. 3 Activities Corner pg. 4 the size of your room, here are some of the things we see used to create a home: Framed Photos Fresh Flowers Small Tables and Chairs Doilies Computers Fold-up chairs for visitors House Plants Paintings Bedspreads and Quilts Clocks Small Refrigerators Candy dishes Calendars Artwork Books Telephones Throw pillows Trophies Anywhere you go, your family knows that wherever you are is where home is. So don’t be afraid to leave your house to make a new home in a skilled-nursing community. Remember, no matter what you bring with you, you’ll always have you, your family and your friends.
