Project 1
A Camp Newsletter
Create a camp newsletter for Camp Green Lake. A
newsletter should have a variety of sections, explore
viewpoints of the different people at Camp Green Lake,
and inform its readers about events and everyday life at
camp.
Project 2
A Television News Report
Organize a news report on the truth about Camp Green
Lake. You will need to present the information from the
book as a news reporter. Record this on either a video
tape or DVD. You might include visual and sound
effects and even interview some of the characters!
Project 3
A Children’s Book
Write a young children’s version of the events in Holes.
Create an eight to ten page children’s book featuring
simplified text and lots of creative artwork. You might
include pop-ups, pictures behind doors, or textured
objects children can touch.
Project 4
Journal
Choose one of the characters in Holes and write ten
journal entries that he or she might have made
describing his or her experiences in a homemade journal.
Project 5
Autobiography
Assume the identity of the Warden. Write a fictional
autobiography beginning with her earliest memories of
childhood through what you believe happened to her
after the book. You will have to make up some
information, so use your imagination!
Project 6
Cover that Book!
Create an original book jacket for Holes. Include
artwork for the front and back, a summary in the inside
front flap, and information about the author on the back
inside flap. Make sure your book jacket is original and
different from the actual cover.
Project 7
Make a Model
Create a model of Camp Green Lake. In a model, size is
very important. Each piece of the model should be sized
appropriately in relation to the other pieces. Try to make
your details as realistic as possible. Pay close attention
to the details in the story, such as placement, color, size
and labeling.
Project 8
Brochure
Imagine Camp Green Lake is a typical camp. The
people who run the camp would probably want to
advertise in some way. Keeping in mind what Camp
Green Lake is really like, design a brochure to advertise
the camp. Your brochure could be realistic and serious,
telling parents what their children will experience if
sentenced to Camp Green Lake. It could be persuasive
trying to encourage judges throughout Texas to send
boys to the camp. Or, it could be humorous, describing a
fun summer camp. Most real camp brochures include
information about location, organized activities, skills
that campers will learn, sleeping/eating/bathing
facilities, and any special features. A good brochure
should be very informative and colorful. Look at some
real brochures from hotels, parks, amusement parks, and
other camps to get ideas.
