At the learning stations, you will analyze two poems with the same theme. Discuss your answers
with other team members after completing each activity.

Station One: Extended Metaphor Poem
A metaphor is a comparison of two like or unlike things.
Example: The snow is a blanket covering the countryside.
Snow and a blanket are being compared. They are alike
because they both cover something.
An extended metaphor poem takes a metaphor and
compares it throughout the poem. “O Captain! My Captain!” is an
extended metaphor poem. Walt Whitman wrote this poem as a tribute
to President Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated just before the
end of the Civil War.
Directions: Read the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” and complete

O Captain! My Captain!
Walt Whitman wrote the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” following the assassination of
Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Whitman revised his poem several times. On February 9, 1888, Whitman wrote to a publisher about the errors to his poem that appeared in their anthology. He sent a
correction sheet to the publisher. The poem below reflects Whitman’s 1888 revisions. To view the

O Captain! My Captain!
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring.
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red!
Where on the deck my captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills:
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding:
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck
You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still:
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will.

THE MARTYR
Indicative of the passion of the people on the 15th of April, 1865.
Good Friday was the day
Of the prodigy and crime,
When they killed him in his pity,
When they killed him in his prime
Of clemency and calm—
When with yearning he was filled
To redeem the evil-willed,
And, though conqueror, be kind;
But they killed him in his kindness,
In their madness and their blindness,
And they killed him from behind.
There is sobbing of the strong,
And a pall upon the land;
But the People in their weeping
Bare the iron hand:
Beware the People weeping
When they bare the iron hand.
He lieth in his blood—
The father in his face;
They have killed him, the Forgiver—
The Avenger takes his place,
The Avenger wisely stern,
Who in righteousness shall do
What the heavens call him to,
And the parricides remand;
For they killed him in his kindness,
In their madness and their blindness,
And his blood is on their hand.
