REMEMBERINGTHEBASQUEREFUGEES 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF LANCING’S HOME FOR CHILDREN FLEEINGTHE SPANISH CIVIL WAR Saturday 20 May 2017 from 12pm Lancing Library, Penstone Park, Lancing BN15 9DL A blue plaque is to be unveiled at Lancing Library, where in 1937 Penstone House welcomed a group of refugee children from northern Spain. They were among nearly 4,000 children who had arrived by ship in Southampton on 23 May 1937, having left Bilbao to escape a bombing campaign being waged by Franco, Hitler and Mussolini against Spain’s Basque Country during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. The library will be hosting an exhibition about the children’s home and there will be musical entertainment and Basque-themed food. Speakers include Jim Jump of the International Brigade Memorial Trust and Manuel Moreno, who is the son of a Basque child refugee. Contact: [email protected]
