IAFE NATIONAL CODE OF ETHICS
(International Association of Fairs and Expos)
Exhibitors of animals at livestock shows shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. Their conduct in this competitive environment shall always reflect the highest standards of honor and dignity to promote the advancement of agricultural education. This code
applies to junior as well as open class exhibitors who compete in structured classes of competition. This code applies to all livestock offered in any
event at a livestock show.
All youth leaders working with junior exhibitors are under an affirmative responsibility to do more than avoid improper conduct or questionable
acts. Their moral values must be so certain and positive that those younger and more pliable will be influenced by their fine example. Owners, exhibitors, fitters, trainers and absolutely responsible persons who violate the code of ethics will forfeit premiums, awards and auction proceeds and
shall be prohibited from future exhibition in accordance with the rules adopted by the respective fairs and livestock shows. Exhibitors who violate
this code of ethics demean the integrity of all livestock exhibitors and should be prohibited from competition at all livestock shows in the United
States and Canada.
The following is a list of guidelines for all exhibitors and all livestock in competitive events:
1. All exhibitors must present, upon request of fair and livestock show officials, proof of ownership, length of ownership and age of all animals entered. Misrepresentation of ownership, age or any facts relating thereto is prohibited.
2. Owners, exhibitors, fitters, trainers or absolutely responsible persons shall provide animal health certificates from licensed veterinarians upon
request by fair or livestock show officials.
3. Junior exhibitors are expected to care for and groom their animals while at fairs or livestock shows.
4. Animals shall be presented to show events where they will enter the food chain free of violative drug residues. The act of entering an animal in a
livestock show is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer and/or absolutely responsible person forshowmanagement to obtain
any specimens of urine, saliva, blood or other substances from the animal to be used in testing. Animals not entered in an event which culminates
with the animal entering the food chain shall not be administered drugs other than in accordance with federal, state and provincial statutes, regulation and rules affect the animal’s performance or appearance at the event.
If the laboratory report on the chemical analysis of saliva, urine, blood or other sample taken from livestock indicates the presence of forbidden
drugs or medication, this shall be prima facie evidence such substance has been administered to the animal either internally or externally. It is
presumed that the sample of saliva, urine, blood or other substance tested by the laboratory to which it is sent is the one taken from the animal in
question and correctly reflects the condition of the animal at the time the sample was taken, with the burden on the owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer
or absolutely responsible person to prove otherwise.
At any time after an animal arrives on the fair or livestock show premises, all treatments involving the use of drugs and/or medications, for the sole
purpose of protecting the health of the animal, shall be administered by a licensed veterinarian. *The Minnesota State Fair allows exceptions in
breeding classes for sound management practices such as mastitis or pneumonia control.
5. Any surgical procedure or injection of any foreign substance or drug or the external application of any substance (irritant, counterirritant or similar substance) which could affect the animal’s performance or alter its natural contour, conformation or appearance, except external applications
of substances to the hoofs or horns of animals which affect appearance only and except for surgical procedures performed by a duly licensed
veterinarian for the sole purpose of protecting the health of the animal, is prohibited.
6. The use of showing and/or handling practices or devices such as striking animals to cause swelling, using electrical contrivance or other similar
practices are not acceptable and are prohibited.
7. Direct criticism or interference with the judge, fair or livestock show management, other exhibitors, breed representatives or show officials before, during or after the competitive event is prohibited. In the furtherance of their official duty, all judges, fair and livestock show management
or other show officials shall be treated with courtesy, cooperation and respect and no person shall direct abusive or threatening conduct toward
them.
8. No owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer or absolutely responsible person shall conspire with another person or persons to intentionally violate this code
of ethics, or knowingly contribute or cooperate with another person or persons either by affirmative action or inaction to violate this code of ethics. Violation of this rule shall subject such individual to disciplinary action.
9. The application of this code of ethics provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in, or had actual knowledge of the treatment of, the animal in contravention of this code
of ethics.
10. The act of entering an animal is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer or absolutely responsible person to have disciplinary
action taken by the fair or livestock show for violation of this Code of Show Ring Ethics and any other rules of competition of the fair or livestock
show without recourse against the fair or livestock show. The act of entering an animal is the giving of consent that any proceedings or disciplinary actions taken by the fair or livestock show may be published with the name of the violator or violators in any publication of the International
Association of Fairs and Expositions, including Fairs and Expositions and any special notices to members.
11. The act of entering an animal in a fair or livestock show is the giving of verification by the owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer or absolutely
responsible person that he or she has read the IAFE National Code of Show Ring Ethics and understands the consequences of and penalties
provided for actions prohibited by the code. It is further a consent that any action which contravenes these rules and also in violation of
federal, state or provincial statues, regulations or rules may be released to appropriate law enforcement authorities with jurisdiction over
such infractions.

1. Media Interview - The contestant will participate in a mock media interview. The interviewer will
have pre-determined questions to ask each contestant with the option to ask follow-up questions in
order to receive additional knowledge or clarify a point. A panel of judges will observe the interaction for: knowledge, articulation, poise and the contestant’s ability to “Tell the Beef Production Story”
and present beef and farming in a positive light.
2. Consumer Event - A mock consumer event will be set up for the contestants. Each contestant will
be provided with a beef sample, beef literature and recipes. Interested “consumers” will approach
the table. They will ask pre-determined questions to test the contestant’s knowledge, capacity to
interact with the public, and ability to present beef in a positive light. A panel of judges will observe
and score each contestant on their ability to educate the consumer and provide the consumers with
the appropriate information to answer their questions. Each contestant will have 5 minutes to interact with the “Consumers” who will ask questions. Contestants are able to ask the consumers questions to engage a deeper dialogue about beef, and are encouraged to do so.

Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 4:30 pm
sponsored by
AgStar Fund for Rural America & Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association
Please join us for this incredible event geared towards helping youth explore the beef industry in a fun and rewarding fashion. Sponsored by AgStar Fund for Rural America and the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association, this event
was initially designed to bring together youth who submitted a MYBEP application, but did
not win a heifer; hence, the MYBEP label. However, we have now opened this rewarding
experience to anyone who is interested in beefing up their industry knowledge! Adults are
welcome to attend as well.
Breakout sessions will stimulate discussions and thoughts as beef industry experts explore popular topics such as
breeding and genetic selection, BQA, cattle health, financial issues, and so much more. MYBEP Coordinator, Claudine
Goodrich, will share pointers on how to improve future applications for those interested. Each session presenter will
help you generate ideas that may eventually be applied to your own herds.
At the conclusion of the sessions, the Peterson Farm Brothers will perform. Finally, a heifer donated by the
Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association will be awarded to the next highest applicant. Applicants must be
present during the entire evening to win. Also, the symposium will count towards the Premier Exhibitor Contest and interested youth will need to get their passport stamped after each session.

MINNESOTA YOUTH BEEF EXPERIENCE PROGRAM
The purpose of this program is to aid youth in getting a start in the beef cattle business by awarding heifer calves to
program participants on the basis of merit, need, future goals and ability to care for the animal. Any youth ages 12–16

Deadline to enter is September 8, 2016. Heifer recipients will be selected by a committee, and the heifers will be
awarded during the Beef Expo.
The MYBEP Committee will select 11 program participants from the pool of qualified applicants. Each program participant will own their heifer jointly with the donor until the completion of the program, at which time the
participant will receive full ownership of the heifer and her offspring. Each program participant will be responsible for
raising the calf, arranging for her to be bred (artificially or naturally), maintaining complete records on her care, and
providing quarterly progress reports to the donor and the Beef Expo. Failure to adequately follow these requirements
during the course of the year when the heifer is owned in partnership may cause the program participant to forfeit their
ownership of the animal. Minnesota Select Sires will donate two straws of semen and Land O’Lakes Purina will donate
100 lbs. of feed to each winner. Winning youth will also receive a clippers donated by Andis and a showstick from the

Meet This Year’s Youth Beef Experience Sponsors
Angus: Purfeerst Farms, Deb & Jim,
Mark & Jamie Purfeerst and Matt
Purfeerst of Faribault, Minn. of the
Minnesota Angus Association
You won’t find a big herd of cattle at
Purfeerst Farms in Faribualt, Minn., but
you will find quality. The cattle operation, managed by brothers Mark and
Matt Purfeerst, started as many do – a 4-H
project. With the support of their parents,
Jim and Deb, the Purfeerst siblings purchased their first breeding females in the
early 90s and spent many years showing
cattle across the Midwest. Today, they are
proud to have established a seedstock
operation that is respected by Angus
breeders across the Midwest. Today, they
manage a small herd of purebred Angus
cows, a handful of which have become
successful donor cows for their operation. They rely heavily on embryo and
AI technology to advance their cowherd
and utilize herds from across the state
to raise their genetics via embryo transplants. Each fall, they sell 10 or so heifers via private treaty to youth exhibitors.
They have twice raised the Reserve Supreme Heifer at the MN State Fair as well
as the Supreme Champion Bull at the
2012 National Junior Angus Show. They
also sell genetic packages to seedstock
producers.
The Purfeerst operation has long history, and Mark and Matt are the 6th
generation to live and work on the family
operation. Jim works full-time on their
crop operation. Mark works full-time for
AgStar Financial Services and lives on
the family farm with his wife Jamie, who
works for BEEF Magazine and helps run
the MN Beef Expo, and their children Leo
and Ivy. Matt works for Cargill. They are
excited about this opportunity. In their
early days, they won their fair share of red
ribbons and spent a lot of time talking
and listening to producers to get where
they are today. They are excited to help a
deserving young individual get involved
in the Angus breed.
Charolais: The Minnesota/Wisconsin
Charolais Association will sponsor a
Charolais heifer.
Charolais: Kathrein Charolais, Clint,
Roxane, Kaylee & Kendra Kathrein, Little
Falls, Minn. of the Minnesota/Wisconsin
Charolais Association
Clint, his wife Roxane, and daughters
Kaylee, a sophomore at NDSU who’s
working on an Agriculture Education Degree, and Kendra, a senior at Little Falls
Community High School, own and operate a purebred Charolais herd just north
of Little Falls, Minn. Clint took over the
herd in 1994 from his dad who originally
started the Charolais herd in 1979. The
Kathrein’s current herd consists of 40 registered Charolais cows and the girls own
a small herd of Red Angus. For the past
ten years they have focused on improving their herd through AI and embryo
transfer work, where they currently average a 95% conception rate on their AI.
The Kathrein’s are a cooperator herd for
Leachman Cattle of Colorado, where they
focus on low birth, high marbling, and
feed efficiency. Clint has been involved in
the cattle business his whole life. His contributions to the industry include fitting,
being a herdsman, manager, breeder,
and judge. The whole family is very involved with 4-H, as well as other youth
activities to help today’s youth gain the
knowledge and skills it takes to become
tomorrow’s leaders of the beef industry.
Clint and Roxane are very proud of how
much knowledge their daughters have
gained not only in the show ring, but
also about their operation and the beef
industry. The whole Kathrein family is
extremely honored to help touch someone’s life through this unique program.
The Kathrein’s are excited to be mentors
and welcome someone new to, not only
the Charolais breed, but also their family.
Hereford: Carlson Farms, Ross and
Beth Carlson & Family, Murdock, Minn.
of the Minnesota Hereford Breeders
Carlson Farms is a diversified crop and
livestock farm owned by brothers Ross
and Rob and their dad Richard. On their
family farm, they raise Hereford cattle as
well as corn, soybeans, alfalfa and small
grains just north of Murdock in Swift
County, Minn. Their branch consists of
Ross, his wife Beth (who was raised on
a prominent Hereford farm in Wisconsin) and their two children Mallory and
Regan.
They began their herd in the early 70s
when they purchased Hereford females
as 4-H projects. The herd grew rather
quickly until their cowherd contained
100 females or so. After college, Ross
decided to join the family operation per-
29
manently. The herd grew again thereafter
until the cow numbers reached the 200
plus head they run today.
Herefords have been good to the
Carlson family throughout the years. They
regard them as “all around good cattle”
excelling in the cowherd and the feedlot.
The Carlson family has enjoyed raising
and showing Hereford cattle and looks
forward to working with a young person
who has the same interest.
Limousin: CWS Cattle Co., Coby and
Steve Backman, Morris, Minn. of the
Minnesota Limousin Association
Agriculture is rooted deep into the
genetics of each person in the Backman
family. CWS Cattle located in Morris,
Minn., is owned and operated by Steve
and Cathy Backman and Coby and Sarah
Backman and is a registered purebred
Limousin herd. As a father and son partnership, Steve and Coby together bought
their first 36 head in 2006. Over the past
10 years, the CWS herd has grown to
more than 100 head with plans for continued growth. Their breeding program
focuses on producing high-growth, highmuscled, docile breeding stock for ranchers who want to take advantage of the
efficiency and growth the Limousin breed
provides. CWS Cattle market their bulls
through the Wulf Cattle brand at the annual Opportunity Sale and through
private treaty arrangement.
Steve and Coby have each always had
a passion for livestock. In addition to his
full-time welding shop, Steve kept up to
800 sheep on their family farm site while
Steve and Cathy raised their four boys.
After graduating with an agronomy
degree, Coby returned to Morris and
works full-time for a local farming operation that raises crops and feedlot cattle.
Coby’s work at the feedlot helped
develop his love of the cattle industry.
The Backmans work to promote and support agriculture through youth programs
such as 4-H and FFA and through their
local West Central Cattleman’s Association (WCCA) as board members and
volunteers. The lifestyle, the creation
of such a close family bond, the tireless
work ethic and the blessed reward are
just a few of the very important reasons
why they would encourage anyone to
become involved in any way with agriculture.
Meet This Year’s Youth Beef Experience Sponsors
Maine Anjou: The Minnesota Maine
Anjou Association will sponsor the Maine
Anjou heifer.
Red Angus Heifer: AgStar Fund for
Rural America
A recipient will receive a heifer that
has been purchased with funds granted
from the AgStar Fund For Rural America.
Established in 2001, the AgStar Fund for
Rural America is the corporate giving
program of AgStar Financial Services,
ACA. Since its inception, the Fund has
donated over $6M to organizations in
rural communities that work to improve
the quality of life through education,
technology or the environment.
The AgStar Fund focuses its giving programs in geographic areas where AgStar
has a continuing business presence. It is
committed to being a leading corporate
citizen in these communities. Through
self-directed programs and partnering
with others, the AgStar Fund extends its
reach into rural communities. The combined efforts enable AgStar to live our
mission to enhance life in agriculture and
rural America.
Symposium Donation Heifer: Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association
The Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association (MSCA) is a membership-based
organization that represents cattle producers and individuals who are part of
the cattle community in Minnesota. The
association is also now offering opportunities for junior members through the
creation of the Minnesota Junior Cattlemen’s Association. The junior program
will provide junior leadership development, career opportunities and junior
activities at the MSCA State Convention,
Summer Cattlemen’s Tour and many
other events.
The MSCA currently represents over
1,000 members from all segments of the
beef community. They are proud of their
partnership with over 20 local cattlemen’s
associations from around the State that
affiliate with the MSCA.
The MSCA is primarily focused on addressing local, state and federal issues
that impact the long-term viability of
cattle production and ensuring that Minnesota’s business climate welcomes the
growth and long-term success of raising
cattle in Minnesota. The MSCA also works
on several promotional activities during
the year, including FarmFest, the MN
Beef Expo, MN State Fair, Cattlemen and
the Capitol (both St. Paul and Washington, D.C.) and many more!
To learn more about the MSCA, visit
their website at www.mnsca.org or check
out their Facebook page for the most
recent industry news.
Shorthorn: Bollum Family Shorthorns,
the Bollum Family, Goodhue, Minn., of
the Minnesota Shorthorn Association
Bollum Family Shorthorms is a 5th generation family farm located east of Goodhue, Minn., where the original
Bollums settled in 1863. Shorthorns were
used on the farm from the very beginning because of their dual-purpose traits.
A purebred herd was started in the late
1930’s. LeAnn (Prairie du Chien High
School), Cory (Hormel Foods), and Carl
(BCF Technology) are continuing the
Shorthorn tradition on this Sesquicentennial Family Farm.
The cattle operation today consists of
75 purebred Shorthorn females and 40
commercial females used as recipients in
their embryo transplant program. They
have been performance testing and ultrasound scanning for many years in an
effort to identify the cow families and genetics that will be most successful in producing better beef. Their collective goal
has been to produce sound, functional
cattle that will be profitable for purebred
and commercial cattlemen alike. They
have had success at the MN State Fair
with numerous Premier Breeder and
Premier Exhibitor Awards, including the
past three years. They are proud of the
demand for BFS bred females in their annual Red, White, & Roan Saturday Online
Sale in November. The interest in their
genetics, whether it is in their feeder
cattle or seedstock genetics, serves as
motivation to continue producing quality
Shorthorns.
Cory is currently serving on the
Minnesota Shorthorn Association Board
of Directors. Connor, Josh, and Emily
are actively involved with the MN Junior
Shorthorn Association.
30
Simmental: Oak Meadow Farms, Dr.
Lynn & Barb Aggen, Matt and Jessica
and Family, Harmony, Minn. of the
Minnesota Simmental Association
Oak Meadow Farms started with their
first purebred Simmentals in 1981 and
the herd has since grown to 150 breeding age females. With those females and
the use of progressive artificial insemination and embryo transfer, they have
developed one of the more respected
herds in the Midwest. Oak Meadow
Farms markets roughly 25 outstanding
bulls per year via private treaty of the
farm. They also market top-end females
at MN Beef Expo, North Central Fall
Classic Sale, MN State Simmental Sale
and the National Western Stock Show.
Oak Meadow Farms also exhibits cattle
at the Iowa and Minnesota State Fairs,
American Royal and National Western
Stock Show. Every November, Oak
Meadow Farms hold a customer
appreciation feeder calf sale. This sale
features feeder cattle sired by Oak
Meadow Farms’ bulls. This event has
been extremely successful. “Performance
with quality” is the motto at Oak Meadow
and the Aggen family works hard every
day to raise healthy high quality, high
performing Simmental cattle.
South Devon Heifer: Northern States
South Devon Association (NSSDA)
The Northern States South Devon
Association was formed over 15 years
ago by a small group of South Devon
breeders in central-Minnesota. An active
and enthusiastic group of South Devon
producers from Wisc., Minn., N. Dak.,
and Mont. currently promote the South
Devon cattle throughout the Midwest by
participating in farm shows, 4-H and FFA
activities, Jr. shows and livestock events.
A strong junior association participates
each year at the Minnesota Beef Expo.
Members from the association have
strongly supported MYBEP by donating a South Devon heifer each year to a
deserving junior. Northern States South
Devon Association members donate
funds toward the support of MYBEP and
a heifer is selected and purchased from
one of the members each year.
All of the past recipients of South
Devon heifers are active members in the
North American South Devon Junior Association.
