Clerks of Rural Nevada
15 rural counties (excluding Washoe and Clark)
Challenges of conducting elections in rural Nevada:
Distances between polling locations and Clerks’ Offices
x Nye County tallies the results on election night in two locations that are 180 miles apart to finish
timely, with 3 polling locations over 50 miles away. There is 250 miles between polling locations in
Nye County.
x Elko County has 2 polling locations that are over 50 miles from the Clerk’s Office, with Wells at 50
miles and Wendover over 110 miles.
x Esmeralda, Lincoln, Lyon and Mineral have a polling location over 50 miles from the Clerk’s office.
Mailing precincts are necessary
x By state law, counties can elect to designate a precinct a mailing precinct if there are fewer than
200 voters in that precinct. In rural Nevada, 7% of our precincts are mailing precincts.
Lack of Connectivity
x White Pine County – in McGill, poll workers have to walk outside, put one foot on a piece of
playground equipment and one on the curb to get a decent signal to call the Clerk with questions
or concerns.
x Humboldt County – Most of the time, a poll worker has to drive to an area with cell service to call
the Clerk’s office.
