Which are the cardinal points (write the names out in full)? (2) North, East, South, West 2. Which are the intercardinal points (write the names out in full)? (2) Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest Question 2: 1. Answer the following questions: Name four map conventions (4) Title of the map, scale of the map, compass and symbols 2. Sort the following maps from largest to smallest scale: Map of Australia Map of Disney World Map of the World Map of Cape Town (4) Map of Disney World, Map of Cape Town, Map of Australia, Map of the World 3. Discuss the difference between a small and a large scale map, using any of the examples above in your explanation. (6) On a small scale map, a small distance on the map represents a large distance in real life and shows less detail. As a rule small scale maps are usually smaller than 1:1 000 000. A map of the World or a country will usually be a small scale map. On a large scale map, a small distance on the map represents a shorter distance in real life and a lot of detail is shown. As a rule large scale maps are usually larger than 1:25 000. A map of Disney World or Cape Town will be an example of a large scale map. (Medium scale maps usually fall between 1:25 000 and 1:1 000 000) Page 8 of 11 Grade 7 Geography MEMO: 4. What should be included in all sketch maps? (5) Symbols to explain landmarks and features Distance scale A key Compass Information on how land is used and vegetation seen in different areas. 5. When will a string be used and when will a ruler be used to calculate distances on a map? A string will be used when indirect distances are to be measured on a street map or a sketch map. The string will also be used when roads between places are not straight, but curved. A ruler wil be used when direct distances are to be measured on a map and when roads between places are straight. 6. (2) What is the difference between lines of longitude and lines of latitude? Give one example each of an important line of longitude and latitude. (4) Lines of longitude runs from North to South across the Earth, measured in degree East or West of the Prime Meridian/ Greenwich Meridian (0o). Line of latitude runs from West to East across the Earth, measured in degrees North or South of the Equator (0o). Other important lines of latitude is the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Question 3: 1. Scales What are the three types of scales that can be used on maps? (3) Word scale, ratio scale and a graphic scale 2. Write each of the following scales in words and specify if this will be found on a small scale or large scale map: a) (10) One centimetre on the map represents 250 kilometres on the ground b) One centimetre on the map represents 2 000 kilometres on the ground c) - large scale 1: 85 000 000 - small scale Calculation: 1cm represents 85 000 000 cm There are 100 cm in a metre and 1 000 metres in a kilometre, therefore divide 85 000 000 by 100 000 to convert cm to km: 85000000 ÷ 100000 = 850 One centimetre on the map represents 850 kilometres on the ground - small scale Page 9 of 11 Grade 7 Geography MEMO: d) One centimetre on the map represents 200 metres on the ground e) 1: 600 000 - large scale Calculation: 1 cm represents 600 000 cm There are 100 cm in a metre and 1 000 metres in a kilometre, therefore divide 600 000 by 100 000 to convert cm to km: 600000 ÷ 100000 = 6 One centimetre on the map represents 6 kilometres on the ground 3. - large scale Write the following as a ratio scale and specify - small scale map or large scale map. (4) a) Calculation: 1 cm represents 150 m There are 100 cm in 1 m, therefore 150 x 100 = 15 000 1:15 000 b) - large scale Calculation: 1 cm represents 1 500 000 m There are 100 cm in 1 m, therefore 1 500 000 x 100 = 150 000 000 cm 1: 150 000 000 Question 4: 1. - small scale Using the resource maps on pages 6 and 7, answer the following questions: Complete the table: (9) Map Type of Map Scale in words Large/Small scale A sketch map 1 cm represents 0,2 km large scale B street map 2 cm represents 0,25 km/ 1 cm represents 0,125 km large scale C political map 1 cm represents 1 200 km small scale 2. Using Resource C, give the grid references for the following locations on the map: a) San José in Costa Rica 10oN, 84oW b) Panama City in Panama 9oN, 80oW c) Santiago in Chili 33oS, 70oW d) Brasilia in Brazil 15oS, 48oW (4) (Margins of 2 degrees either way will be allowed) 3. Using Resource C, give the names of the city and country with the following grid references: (3) a) 35oS, 59oW Buenos Aires, Argentina b) 5oN, 74oW Bogotá, Colombia c) 10oN, 61oW Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago Page 10 of 11 Grade 7 Geography MEMO: 4. Specify the location of the continent in Resource C, using lines of longitude and latitude and oceans. (5) o o o o South America is found between 10 N and 60 S, and between 30/35 W and 90 W. South America is therefore largely in the Southern hemisphere and surrounded by two oceans, the Atlantic ocean to the East and the Pacific ocean to the West. 5. Find the actual distances in kilometres, as specified: a) Resource A: Charlie is at the traffic light in Grassland Street. He cycles in an Eastern direction and at the traffic circle, turns right into New Road. At the next circle, he turns left into Lake Road and cycles to the bridge crossing the river. What is the direct distance that Charlie has cycled? 1,5 cm + 5 cm + 2 cm = 8,5 cm Scale: 1cm = 0,2 km 8,5 x 0,2 = 1,7 km b) Resource B: The distance from Technikon Witwatersrand to Ellis Park Rugby Stadium. (2) 4 cm Scale: 1 cm = 0,125 km 4 x 0,125 = 0,5 km c) Resource B: The distance from Johannesburg Stadium to Jeppe Railway Station. (2) 5,5 cm Scale: 1 cm = 0,125 km 5,5 x 0,125 = 0,6875 km d) Resource B: The distance from the Standard Bank Arena to End Street Park (use the middle of these locations as your starting and end points). (2) 7 cm Scale: 1 cm = 0,125 km 7 x 0,125 = 0,875 km e) Resource C: The distance from Asunción in Paraguay to La Paz in Bolivia. (2) 3 cm Scale: 1 cm = 1 200 km 3 x 1 200 = 3 600 km f) Resource C: The distance from Brasilia in Brazil to Santiago in Chili. (2) 5,5 cm Scale: 1 cm = 1 200 km 5,5 x 1 200 = 6 600 km g) Resource C: The distance from Georgetown in Guyana to Montevideo in Uruguay. (2) 8,7 cm Scale: 1 cm = 1 200 km 8,7 x 1 200 = 10 440 km 6. Using Resource A, direct Charlie from the church to the factory where his dad works. Make use of compass directions and landmarks in your directions: (5) Proceed in a Northwestern direction in Church Street, until you reach the STOP street. Turn right into Lake Road and proceed in a Northeastern direction, past Park Lane, until you reach the roundabout (traffic circle). At the traffic circle turn in a Northwestern direction into Main Road (or a Northern direction into River Bend). You will pass a housing complex on your right. Walk till you reach the STOP street, then proceed in Main Road. Walk past the Wetland Park on your left and the Hospital on your right. At the next intersection, just past the traffic light, the Factory will be on your right. Page 11 of 11
