For many years the butter was packed into
bulk, until WWII. This is when Minerva
Dairy invented the 2# Amish Roll.

The Minerva Dairy Family began making cheese in 1894, but
just like making cheese on the farm, when you are done, cream
is left. The small wooden churn from Grampa Max's farm that
held 100 gallons of cream was used. This produced about 400
pounds of butter. For many years the butter was sold in bulk
pieces of random sizes. The need for a uniform size didn't come
until WWII when the country started rationing. After spending
time on an Amish Dairy Farm where the butter was made into
rolls, Delbert and Lorraine took the roll form and produced the
2 pound roll. Creating this 2 pound size worked for rationing
and trading with local merchants. It was during this time that
people could be seen standing in long ration lines waiting to get
their 2 pound Amish Roll Butter. Seventy years later, we still
hand-roll our butter from our small batch churn.

and eliminate leaks in its facility, we blew this goal
out of the water (pun intended). The Minerva Dairy
has now cut its water consumption by 37%! The ten
million gallons is equivalent to filling 315 family pools
or roughly 64 million bottles of the Earth's number one
dwindling resource.
Minerva Dairy is committed to doing its part into the
future: in 2016, they are installing new equipment which
will use 40% less water during cleaning processes.
