Reminder: W.I.A.A. Physicals for Students in Sports Next School Year
Any student who has not had an athletic physical since April 1, 2016, and plans to participate in athletics during the 2017-18 school
year will need to have a physical prior to participation in his/her selected sport(s). The green athletic physical form is available at the
Middle School Office. Just stop by and ask for a physical form before you see your physician or pick one up before the end of the
school year.
Students, who have had a W.I.A.A. physical since April 1, 2016, and have a green card on file in the school office, do not need
another physical this year—just need to have an alternate year (gold card)—on file prior to the first day of practice. The alternate year
cards are also available in the Middle School office.
The Richland Medical Center will be offering sports physicals during the month of July for $15. If you need an athletic
physical, call the Medical Center and schedule one during July to get the special rate. Listen to WRCO or check the local
newspaper for more information about the physicals.
8th Grade Science Students Compete in an “Eggciting Eggsperiment”
On Thursday, May 11th, the RMS 8th grade science students competed in the 15th Annual RMS Egg
Drop. Their task was to create a device that will successfully get a raw chicken egg to the ground without
breaking, when dropped from the roof of the RMS gymnasium. A variety of different ideas were
encouraged and a grading rubric was given out beforehand as a guideline to allow the students to
determine just how to create their device. Points were awarded for reducing the size, egg visibility and
hang time. Other factors included originality, creativity, time/effort, clean up, a cross-section poster of
their device and a short oral presentation on what they did and why. Obviously the ultimate goal was to
have their egg not crack or break. Many students picked up some extra credit and some of the award
winners also won prizes for their effort! It was a fun event! The Award Winners are listed below:

ASHLEE RICHARDSON WINS THIS YEAR’S ICE CUBE CONTEST!!
Once again the 8th grade science classes competed in their annual “Bring An Ice Cube To Class” contest.
The basic concept behind the contest is to design a homemade device that will keep a standard-sized ice cube from
melting the fastest. The ice cube can be the only H2O in the setup, and they may not use an electrical or battery-operated
device. They are also banned from using coolers or ice packs. The size of their apparatus must be no larger than 50,000
cm3. The ice cubes are brought in to Room 110 at 8:10 a.m. and are checked every two hours until they are fully melted.
Students that complete the activity earn a “C” grade (40 out of 50).
If it survives until the 1st check at 10:00 a.m., it earns a “B” (45 out of 50). If it makes it to the noon check, its an “A+”
(50 out of 50). Every check thereafter earns then 2 additional extra credit points. The ultimate goal is to keep Mr. Lynch
up all night, which has been accomplished a couple of times in the past, but not this year!
Ashlee Richardson created a device that kept her ice cube frozen through 8:00 p.m. the day of the contest! It
finally bit the dust by the 10:00 p.m. check. For her efforts, besides the extra credit she earned, she also receive a
homework coupon and a 2-liter bottle of pop (flavor of choice). Congratulations to Ashlee on a super idea! It was a lot of
fun and a really good experience for those who participated.
Conference Math Contest
On March 8th, ten Richland Middle School students represented our school at the conference math contest held at the
Lancaster Middle School. Our RMS math team was made up of 7th and 8th grade students who met after school,
throughout February, to prepare for the annual Southwest Conference Math Competition. The Contest is made up of four,
15-minute tests that cover a wide range of topics in mathematics. Individually, our gold medal winner was Liam Rott.
Maya Benson, Easton Darling, Summit Koegel, Bryce Hillers, and Kim Lux won silver medals. Bronze medal winners
were Connor Schildgen, Micah Walters, Corbin Luttig, and Jack Teska.
District Wide Art Show
The Richland Center District Art Show will be held at the Richland Center High School Monday, May 15th, through
Thursday, May 18th, from 4:00-6:00 each day in the west commons and main hallway. On Friday, May 19th, a closing
reception will take place from 4:00-6:00 at the Richland Center High School. There will be treats, face painting, caricature
drawings, a scavenger hunt, chalk art (weather permitting), and more.
Watch for the back-to-school edition of “The Midway” in early August, 2017, for more information about
the 2017-18 school year events, etc.

Parents of RCHS Freshman Athletes:
The RCHS Athletic Booster Club would like to welcome you and your student athlete to the high school this fall. With the new
school year comes a fresh start for our Hornet athletic teams, and we are excited to have your son or daughter be a part of the tradition
at Richland Center High School.
The RCHS Athletic Booster Club works very hard throughout the year to help promote, fund, and recognize all of our athletic
programs past and present. Currently, most of our operating budget comes from our own fundraising. Money raised throughout the
year is used in various ways including, scholarships for graduating senior athletes, additional equipment and coaching clinics for our
various sports programs and helping to pay for our athletic trainer. Our most recent larger donations include over $10,000 for new
flooring and weight equipment in the high school weight room and at the beginning of this year, we funded the addition of an onsite
strength and conditioning coach. We are very proud of the fact that with our help, our student body has a perfect opportunity to
become healthier and our athletes more competitive.
As you can imagine, all of this comes at a cost, not just money but also manpower. Each year, as our student athlete’s graduate, we
lose many parents that help support our program. Replacing the manpower so we can continue to have a positive impact in our sports
programs is critical to our success. In addition to asking for your individual, family or business membership, we also would
encourage you to become a part of the Booster Club Board of Directors or even serve as an Officer on the Board. These are the
decision makers of the Club and we would appreciate any input and ideas that you might have to make our athletic programs better.
The Athletic Booster Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the high school and is open to all families of the student
body, teachers and coaches. We would appreciate your attendance at these meetings, and strongly encourage all members to get
involved. In doing so, you will not only model a positive image for your student athlete, but you will be able to assist in making
important decisions in reaching their personal athletic goals and improving RCHS athletics. Please contact Monica Eernisse with any
questions you may have at [email protected] or by phone 604-0445.
Otherwise, you can also follow (and share) our Facebook page - Richland Center High School Athletic Booster Club.
