Measuring
Concrete Introduction of Key Vocabulary
Note: A vocabulary illustration is provided, in this Unit, for each of the key words.
mile
ton
fluid ounce
Show the students the picture, from this unit.
Have them suggest what the picture shows miles to different places. Introduce the concept of
5,280 feet in a mile.
Show the picture of the truck, from this unit.
Introduce the students to half ton, one ton, etc.
trucks. Show a 1 pound weight; tell the students
that 2000 pounds equal 1 ton.
Show the students a measuring cup that shows
ounces. If possible, show a single ounce measure.
cup
Show a measuring cup to the students. Have the
students note that there are 8 ounces in 1 cup.
pint
Show the students a pint container - e.g., a carton
on milk, preserving jar, etc.
Fill a 1 cup measure and have the students pour
it into the pint container. They should continue
until they determine that 2 cups are in a pint.
quart
Have the students determine how many cups and
pints are in a quart, using the cup measure and
water.

Measuring
Concrete Introduction of Key Vocabulary
Note: A vocabulary illustration is provided, in this Unit, for each of the key words.
gallon
Place a gallon container in front of the students;
place cup, pint, and quart containers beside the
gallon container. Have the students determine
how many cups, pints, and quarts equal a gallon.
kilometer
Show the students the speed sign, from this unit.
Lead them to realize that the sign is not in miles
but in kilometers. 130 km is approximately 80
miles per hour. Introduce 1 km as .6 of a mile.
liter
Show available liter containers (e.g., pop bottles).
Use the cup, pint, quart, and gallon containers
available for the students to determine their
ratios to 1 liter.

Lesson Plan
Math & The Language Development Model
Review
Review the key math terms, introduced in this unit. If the vocabulary illustrations were not presented during the introduction, show them to the students at this time.
* Nod And Clap , pg. 73
* Flick, pg. 74
* Hop The Line, pg. 74
* Use the Mini-Illustrations activity page, from the Student Support Materials. Have the students cut out
the illustrations. Say the key words and the students show the illustrations.
Basic Speaking
* Balloon Volleyball, pg. 95
* Right Or Wrong?, pg. 97
* Over/Under, pg. 95
Basic Reading
Introduce the math sight words to the students - match the sight words with the vocabulary illustrations. The sight words
are included in the Student Support Materials, attached to these lesson plans.
(Sight Recognition)
* Provide the students with the Activity Pages, from the Student Support Materials.
(Decoding/Encoding)
* Provide the students with the Activity Pages, from the Student Support Materials.
Basic Writing
* Provide the students with the Activity Pages, from the Student Support Materials.
