NOTICE TO PARENTS: Phonics: This week we focused on sound ‘ss.’ (Phase 2 order – last one!) We are learning the vocal sound, what it looks like written down (grapheme), thinking about it as an initial sound and placing it in a cvc/cvcc words for oral blending practise. The first sound of phase 3 is ‘j’. Please send in any NAMED item featuring the sound ‘j’ Monday onwards for example a picture of Jake, Jessica (2), Mia’s Jackson, Anoushka’s Jane, a jumper, a pair of jeans, jewellery, a jacket, a jam jar, a jug, jellybeans, a jump rope, jigsaw etc. Please send in items for our Pesach baby table as the children have loved having baby related props to support their role play this week. Such items can be nappies, bibs, baby cutlery and crockery, baby clothes etc. Phase 2 Phase 3 – many more digraphs (and some trigraphs!) THIS WEEK AT HJPS NURSERY: PESACH 2 WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING/LEARNING We have continued our Pesach focus by learning the whole story of the Exodus from Egypt. We focused on the idea that King Pharaoh refused to free the Jewish people from slavery when asked by Moshe and so Hashem sent ‘ten terrible things’ to Egypt. We have been learning what the ten plagues were and the sequence of them using the plague numeral as a prompt. We have been paying attention to plague no.2 – frogs jumping everywhere! We made lollipop frogs for our Seder and for you use at your own Seder at home this Pesach! We made our frogs by making decisions about how to join our frog to a lollipop – joining methods. We know we can use glue, sellotape, masking tape, a stapler or a hole punch and string – the children chose how to secure their frog! We have learnt that finally, after King Pharaoh allowed the Jewish people to leave after plague 10, they did not have time to cook their bread and so had to eat only matzah on their journey. Some children decided that they wanted to do matzah rubbings! We know we cannot eat any kind of bread/chamets at Pesach. We learnt a fab matzah song – ask your child to sing it to you! We know that after plague no.10 King Pharoah changed his mind about keeping the Jewish people in slavery and allowed them to leave but as he thought about his loss, he changed his mind AGAIN and went after them to recapture them. We know that with Hashem’s help Moshe was able to part the sea so they could walk through – it was a MIRACLE!! We have also learnt about the 6 important items on the plate and the reason why we have them. For example, we have learnt that the ‘Charoset’ reminds us of the cement that the Jewish people used to stick their bricks together when building in Egypt. We also know that the salty water we dip into reminds us of the tears the Jewish people cried when under the rule of King Pharaoh. We chose to make our own Seder plates using paper plates, 6 cut out or created items, glue, pens for drawing free hand. Potato – carpas, shank bone, charoset - making the link with the cement that the Jewish people used to stick the bricks together they were using when working hard in the country of Egypt, maror – bitter herbs or horseradish – link to dipping in salt water which represent the salty tears that they Jewish people were crying when working under the rule of King Pharaoh, lettuce, egg – beitzah We also explored the idea of 3 Matzot and a matzah sandwich at the Seder table and hiding the Afikoman. We have looked at ‘chamets’ or forbidden food items such as bagels, bread, challah and have compared their taller shape to the ‘flat’ matzah that we eat on Pesach. We also know that we drink from 4 cups of wine – we learnt the related song. We have shown the children that we read from the special Pesach story book, the Hagaddah. Please speak about this at home with your children to reinforce recognition of this tricky word and show them a Hagaddah if you have one in your home. After your Seder next week please use the Nursery song book to sing Seder songs at your own Seder gatherings at home! Our key objectives for the week have been for children: To listen to Pesach story with increasing attention and recall To be able to describe the setting of the story, the main events and principal characters To know that print carries meaning and, in English, is read from left to right and top to bottom Know that princes and princesses are the sons and daughters of Kings and Queens Discuss what we can do to look after babies – what needs do they have? Set up a baby interest table Discuss and know how old was a person is at different points in their life To recall the second part of Pesach story Know the different types of ‘hard work’ the Jewish people were doing in Egypt Know that Moshe was Jewish (Hashem) and asked KP to “Let my people go!” To be able to describe and recall in order the main event – Hashem sending 10 plagues To understand why Moshe was compelled to act and why the plagues were sent Finally, Pharaoh had enough of all of the plagues in Egypt. He ran frantically through the streets of Egypt searching for Moshe. Know that the Jewish people ran as fast as they could to leave at once from Egypt To discuss why there was such hurry (changing mind) Exploring the idea of matzah at Pesach time (no time to wait) Know that Hashem gave Moshe strength to part the sea To know that the exodus from Egypt was a miracle To understand that the Jews became free people Discuss the Seder plate items and know their relevance/what they represent Understand their significance/representation Know that the Seder runs like a regular Shabbat with candle lighting, kiddush, washing hands, hamotsi on matzah Participate in a Nursery Seder Sing Pesach related songs Baby Moshe Role Play and Baby Care Photos
