McCormick News February 1, 2015 Dear McCormick Parent/Guardian(s): Hard to believe it is already February. We know you join us in hoping for more sunshine and less illness this month. Here are some reminders for the week ahead: Thursday is wear your favorite baseball hat day! The flyer has the wrong date, but the right day. Yearbook order forms went out on Friday. You have from now until February 27th to order, so don't delay. You can also place your order online at: ybpay.lifetouch.com and use yearbook code: 751765 Friday, February 13th is the Mom-Son Dance at 7PM. Get your registrations in!! SAVE THE DATE: McCormick's Annual Talent Show Coming Soon....Auditions will begin in March (date to be determined), Dress Rehearsal Friday, March, 13 and the Show on Saturday, March 14th. Packet Distribution will be mid-February with all the details. In the event we should have a snow day, we'd like to offer some things to do on your day off from school. Write down all the activities you were able to accomplish and have a parent sign. Come in with that signed paper the next day and give it to your teacher. Kindergarten 1. Practice math facts. 2. Read for 20 minutes with a friend or parent. First Grade 1. Practice math facts. You can use a deck of cards to play Compare, Double Compare or War. 2. Read for 20 minutes. 3. Write 2-3 sentences about what you are doing on your day off. 4. Make observations about the weather. What do you see, hear, feel, taste and (smell). 5. Play a board game. Second Grade Reading: Choose a favorite book and read for 20 minutes! Writing: Write a letter to your teacher about all the fun you had on your snow day! Write an acrostic poem for one of the following words: o SNOWMAN o WINTER o SNOW DAY o SLEDDING o HOT COCOA Make a list of all the things you want to do on your day off. Be creative! Draw a picture of a snowman and write directions to make one. Math: Go outside and make a snow angel. Measure the “wing span” and length of your angel in inches and feet! Practice counting a collection of coins. Set up a hot chocolate stand and count your earnings! Measure how deep the snow is in different spots outside your house. Measure the footprints of different people in the snow. Make a list of 5 things you did on your snow day. Record the time digitally and on a hand-made analog clock! Computer: MAPS practice games and activities funbrain.com Third Grade Then have your guardian sign off on the bottom of the sheet and bring finished work the next school day. We will reward your hard work with 3rd grade money. Fourth Grade Math - Mobymax (20 min) Reading - Read for at least 30 min and write summary in journal Science (Optional) - With parental assistance, follow a recipe using measurement and write the procedure. Social Studies (Optional) - Draw and color a map of your bedroom. Draw the furniture, door and windows. Include a legend, scale, title and compass rose. Write 3 questions that could be answered by reading your map. Fifth Grade Science - Prairie Ecosystem Gizmo. Print out student pages at home, complete Gizmo and take 5 question quiz at the end. Turn in student pages when you return. Math- Please work on Moby Max activities for at least 30 minutes. Language Arts - read for 30 minutes. Write summary of what you have read. Sixth Grade Science-Use a cooking recipe—Use as is, cut the recipe in half, or double it. Describe the phase changes the ingredients go through in the cooking process. Submit the recipe and your summary of phase changes or nutritional values and caloric count per serving. Math-Keep up with Digits and weekly packet. Language Arts-Read a book of your choice for 45 minutes. What key idea or theme does the author introduce and develop? What specific details does the author use to convey this idea? Include these points in a summary that is at least 10 sentences long. If you complete all of these items, you will get a trip to the prize center!!! Enjoy the rest of your week, see you tomorrow.
