In September, they will begin a new educational experience at the new Essex Public School. The public is invited to a celebration of life at Sun Parlor on Saturday, May 24th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Come and share the memories! Here are some memories from Pam Gibb, LST teacher and former coach of the Bouncing Bears. v It was 1988 when we moved from Dowswell to Sun Parlor. At that time, Dowswell was a satellite of Maplewood, so we travelled across town for all of our gym classes and staff meetings. Once a week, the principal would come over to have lunch with us. As education shifted to a more integrated model, many Special Education students were returned to their home schools, and the Kindergarten to gr. 2 students were moved to Sun Parlor. Given the choice, I decided to go to Sun Parlor, as did most of the “Dowswell Dollies”. We were excited to have our own gym and a beautiful playground, as well as a much newer building. Sun Parlor quickly developed into a very special school community. We became well known as a school with a welcoming environment, a unique mix of students, a dynamic staff, and a lot of exciting things happening. We were uniquely equipped to serve students with a variety of complex needs. That year was also the first year that Junior Kindergarten was implemented by our board of education. Barb Power and I were the teachers, and my son Craig was in the class. It was so much fun! One fateful day the Jumping Jacks did a skipping demonstration at our school. The kids (including my daughter, Lindsay) were hooked, and the Sun Parlor Bouncing Bears were born. The following years were filled with practices, routines, demonstrations, workshops, parades, and compe- K OF C $10.00 PICKEREL 1 pc. We performed at many area schools and helped many school teams get started. Our little team was known across the country, and our routine always group brought the house down! One day, a performer named Jim Parker was setting up in the gym as I was practising with three skippers who were preparing for nationals (Krista Morris, Sarah Sadler, Lisa Allison). Jim was so impressed, he arranged for them to be on the Mr. Dressup show. The entire episode was written around the girls, and they performed three routines on the show. In rehearsal, Krista corrected Mr. Dressup when he didn’t say his line exactly as written. Throughout the 20 years, I have taught or coached many of my neighbours, relatives, friends’ and colleagues’ kids, and my colleagues have taught my kids. Now I’m teaching the children of my ex-students, and my son and daughter are either teaching or coaching the kids that I have taught or coached. And somehow I morphed from the youngest person on staff to the oldest person on staff. So it is with a deep sense of satisfaction and gratitude that I look back on my Sun Parlor years. And on any given day, the sight of a child skipping in the driveway invariably brings a smile. Sun Parlor Junior School News Sun Parlor students raised $3,830 for the future fully accessible outdoor learning area at the new Essex Public School.
