President’s Message
To All Attendees:
Welcome to the 95th Annual AGC of Iowa Meeting and Convention. Congratulations on making the
right decision to attend this convention and I want to personally thank you for your involvement.
The theme for this year’s convention is “Insight for Tomorrow”. As the industry changes and young
leaders emerge, we need to focus on the jobsite of tomorrow. This convention and the opportunities
presented will help you and your business prepare for future success. This industry faces many challenges from finding
qualified workers, aggressive environmental and workplace regulations, and a changing membership demographic. There
are many topics to discuss over the three-day convention.
The popular AGC Iowa PAC Auction will once again be a highlight of convention. The PAC Auction theme is “Make it Happen”.
What an appropriate theme for overcoming the challenges we face as a group and in individual businesses. AGC’s success at
the statehouse starts here with the PAC Auction. Please plan on attending the event for the benefit of this industry.
I, along with incoming President Duane McDonald, would like to welcome you to the 95th gathering of our industry. You have
chosen to attend the marquee event that AGC Iowa works on all year. Have a great time!
Sincerely,
Rick Harlan

“A Patriot’s Calling – Living Between Fear and Faith”
– Maj. Dan Rooney
On Dan’s third tour of duty in Iraq
as an F-16 fighter pilot, he felt a
powerful calling to share the
miraculous fusion pf people and
experiences uniquely placed along
his journey. During his reflection,
he began to understand how the
forces of synchronicity had shaped
his life. Synchronicity, or, as he
likes to call it, “chance with a purpose”, is all around us.
These encounters are sign-posts along the road of life
guiding us toward our essence. We are here for a reason,
each with a destined path. Our life’s purpose lies in the
realm between fear and faith. It is the ultimate reward for
those that venture to the edges of life.

You Can Accomplish Anything” –No leader has ever accomplished
anything great without audacity. If a
leader is filled with high ambition and
he pursues his aims with audacity
and strength of will, he will reach
them in spite of all obstacles. After
our undefeated season at Auburn
University in 1993, I asked our
football team what they wanted to
accomplish in 1994. Every single
young man said they wanted to go undefeated again. My
first impression was that this was crazy - nobody wins
every game two years in a row. Then I thought again. This
was not crazy...it was audacity!

Breakout Seminars
2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Session #1 “Deadly Silence” –
Chuck Goodman, Area Vice President and Loss
Control Rep., Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.
In his study, The Iceberg of Ignorance, Sidney Yoshida
concluded that only 4% of an organization’s front-line
problems are known to top management, 9% are known to
middle management, 74% by supervisors, and 100% by
employees. In other words, the employees are the only
ones in an organization that truly know what and where the
hazards of the job are. But in many organizations, the
employees do not communicate upward to their supervisors
and managers. Chuck will examine the importance of
employee communication; will identify the reasons
employees don’t communicate and will explore methods to
improve the communication channel.

Case Study – Highway 20” Kim Triggs and panel

their succession plan successfully and the different
techniques, and financial tools that are available to help in
that process.
