Advanced 3D Design Wire Gesture Sculpture Criteria What is expected 1. Composition: Components of composition are well placed. Visual and weighted balance is achieved through the position of the figure. Space is well utilized (both positive and negative space) to create a light and airy sculpture based on line. Avoid heavy, tight, solid wrapping of wire that does not create negative space. Components are important to communication visual idea. 20pts. Wire: A variety of techniques in the formation of figure was used. Figure is “in the round” and designed to be viewed from all angles/sides. Proportions of the figure are accurate in scale. 20 pts. 20-18 18-16 16-14 12 or below 3. Gesture: Linear concept of Gesture drawing is represented in the wire of the sculpture. Figure in a creative but challenging position based on the principle of Movement. The figure should display of sense of movement through the linear property of the wire. 20 pts. 20-18 18-16 16-14 12 or below 4. Effort: Photographs of bodies in motion were used as reference pictures. Gesture drawings were done based on the photographs. Time was taken to develop idea. Embraced techniques taught. Worked hard, completed project and used art time wisely. 20 pts. 20-18 18-16 16-14 12 or below 20-18 18-16 16-14 12 or below Criteria 5- Craftsmanship: Neat, clean, accurately rendered and complete. Skillful use of art tools and media. 20 pts. Total Points: 100 pts. Sculptures in the Round. 1. A Relief Sculpture is 3 Dimensional on one side only, the “back” is flat and therefor can be hung on a wall. Relief Sculptures can also be found on architecture where the sculpture is carved into the actual stone surface of the building. Examples of Relief Sculptures 2. A Sculpture in the Round is a sculpture that is freestanding and meant to be viewed from all sides. It is completely surrounded by space. Examples of Sculptures in the Round Wire Gesture Sculpture 1. Research and print reference photographs of figures in motion. Choose at least 3 pictures of figures that you are interested in creating from wire. 2. Create gesture drawings of your chosen photographs and decide on a figure that is interesting, displays movement in its form and will balance and be able to be constructed successfully from aluminum wire. 3. The purpose of "gesture drawing" is to capture the essence of the subject, rather than to present a realistic rendering of details. It has many practical purposes. The speed and style of gesture drawing allow the artist to effectively capture motion and to sketch out the general character of something in motion, indispensable qualities if you want to draw an animal in your nature or a person in action. 4. A gesture drawing can be as quick as 30 seconds and take up to 2 minutes to complete. Gesture Drawing can be described as a scribble with feeling… 5. Begin your Gesture Wire Sculpture by bending, twisting and forming the wire into a basic armature of your chosen figure... A “skeletal” system of sorts. Be sure the proportions are accurate and the position of the figure is correct. 6. Once the skeletal system of the figure is complete, create dimension, form and thickness to the sculpture by adding wire in a way that enhances and accentuates the figures shape as well as its movement.
