Sundance School 200 Sunmills Dr, SE, Calgary, AB T2X 2N9 http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b267 t | 403-777-8690 f | 403-777-8693 |[email protected] Newsletter | September 2016 Principal’s Message It is my honour to welcome students, parents and staff to the new 2016-17 school year. I had a relaxing break intermingled with some staffing and now; I look forward to continuing our work together. With change, we welcome new students, families and staff into our vibrant learning community. We look forward to learning more about you as the year progresses. Important Dates September 13th: School Council Meeting September 16th: Welcome back event, 8:009:00am Volunteer Orientation, 9:0010:00am September 19th: Terry Fox Assembly & Run September 22nd: Parent/Teacher Conferences. No School for Kindergarten September 23rd: Parent/Teacher Conferences. No School for All Students September 22nd & 23rd: Book Fair September 26th: Picture Day Our first day of school...actually the entire week went very smoothly…a testament to the meticulous preparatory work of staff. Congratulations to Mr. Jeff Riddell who is going to be the new Headman at Dr. Martha Cohen School. He with the support of our temporary Facility Operator, Mr. Terry Kadey have gone to great lengths to ensure a safe, clean and comfortable learning environment ready to receive your children. At Sundance, we live a culture of caring and that should be evident as you step into our building and speak with teachers, administration and support staff. This enables us to focus on our primary objective, that being academic excellence and “learning as unique as every student”. Decisions made based on June’s ‘projected’ number of students enabled us to make staffing decisions which best supported student learning. We presently have 494 students…wow. Boy/girl ratios, having at least one ‘friend’, balancing academic and social abilities and ‘teacher fit’ all factor into how teachers created balanced learning environments. This takes a lot of teacher time, discussion and thought. We also know that annually, students and families either move to another school or transfer into ours. For instance, we temporarily hosted Fort Mac students and now they are happy to be back in their home school. While it was a pleasure to get to know them, we wish them well and we will miss them. We have had a few ‘out of boundary’ families wishing to attend Sundance School. Where we have resources, we consider including such families. Where our resources are stretched, unfortunately we have had to say sorry. Parents can appreciate how changes (additions/deletions) to a classroom can greatly affect the amount of thought teachers place into creating positively balanced classrooms. I mention this here because I wish to thank parents for their trust and understanding of our rigour in student placements. We have not had a number of requests, as in the past to have children relocated for various reasons. Every move impacts classroom environments significantly. If we have not honoured a parent request to make a move, it wasn’t because we didn’t listen. It is most likely in the best interest of each child. Please do not hesitate to drop in / call (403) 777-8690 if there is something we can help you with. The energy level in our school is high, the staff is dedicated, talented and focused and our parents continue to be supportive and involved. This supports a happy, healthy and productive school learning environment as we “Learn to soar…Apprendre à s’élever”. Merci mille fois Mr. Pedron Sundance School September 2016 September’s Virtue of the Month: Respect / Le respect What is Respect? Respect is an attitude of caring about people and treating them with dignity. Respect is valuing ourselves and others. We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy. When we are respectful we treat others as we want to be treated. Respect includes honouring the rules of our family or school, which make life more orderly and peaceful. It is knowing that every man, woman and child deserves respect, including you. Why Practice Respect? Without respect for rules, we would have confusion. People would treat each other rudely and violate each other’s privacy and other rights. Respect helps people to feel valued. Elders deserve special respect because they have lived longer and learned may of life’s lessons. Self-respect is making sure no one hurts you or abuses you, even an elder. When you respect yourself, others respect you too. How do you practice Respect? Think about how you would like others to treat you and treat them with the same dignity. How would you like others to speak to you, treat your belongings, and your right to privacy? If you want to use someone else’s things, ask, and then take good care of them. Express even your strongest feelings in a peaceful way. Treat yourself as you feel others deserve to be treated. You deserve it too! What would Respect look like if… You want to use your friend’s bike but he/she is not around to ask? Your grandparents come over and start giving you advice? You find yourself talking back to a teacher / parent /…? Your brother is in the bathroom and you need to ask him a question? There is a rule at school you don’t agree with? An older person starts touching you inappropriately? You have a disagreement with a classmate / fellow student in class / on the playground? Signs of Success: Congratulations! You are practicing respect when you… Treat others as you want to be treated Speak courteously to everyone Take special care of other people’s belongings Are receptive to the wisdom of elders Honor the rules of your family, school and country Expect respect for your body and your rights 2 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 AFFIRMATION: I am respectful. I treat others and myself as we deserve to be treated. I show courtesy to everyone. I learn from the wisdom of elders. Respect Reflection Questions Name three ways you already practice respect. Name three ways you could show more respect. What are ways we need to respect our bodies? How important is privacy to you? How can you set boundaries to protect your privacy? How would you show respect if you disagree with the teacher…a parent…a fellow student…? How do you feel when people treat you disrespectfully? How do you feel when people treat you respectfully? Name some school rules. How do they help keep things peaceful and orderly? Quotable Quotes: Take care of your reputation. It’s your most valuable asset. Anonymous There is a longing among all people to have a sense of purpose and worth. To satisfy that common longing in all of us we must respect each other. Chief Dan George Respect is treating your body with the same care you would give any other valuable and irreplaceable object. Cherie Carter Scott Your body is your vehicle for life. As long as you are here live in it. Love, honour, respect, and cherish it, treat it well, and it will serve you in kind. Susy Prudden No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Eleanor Roosevelt When I respect others, others respect me, and I like that. th 6 grader 3 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 NO PARKING / Parking Lot Chain Two years ago, we began attaching our parking lot chain at about 8:00 am each morning in response to parents pulling into our parking lot to drop off their children. Should you be in our parking lot and the chain goes up, please know that it is taken down at about 8:20ish when everyone is in school. While signs at the entrance to our parking lot clearly indicate not to use our parking lot to load and/or unload children, some parents continue to do so. This is a safety issue for everyone…please do not enter our parking lot, rather, park in front of the lake where there are ample spots and you can load / unload children in a safe manner. Attached are pictures of the signs that have always been in place for your close attention / inspection. Further, should you be picking your child up and walking to your vehicle by the lake, please use the sidewalk…we have noticed parents walking with children in the middle of our parking lot. This is an extremely dangerous practice and it will be addressed by staff members if noticed. Teachers try to book appointments at the end of the day so as to avoid having a Visiting Teacher in their classroom. They also attend workshops at the end of the day and need to leave promptly. Children and/or parents walking in the middle of the parking lot are at risk of being hit if a staff member backs out without seeing them. Please take a few extra steps to get to our sidewalk by our school. We think you and your children are worth that extra effort. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Student Recognition (Parents…if your child has done something of note and you would like them recognized, send us a note with his/her name and the accomplishment / details. We will publish their first name and what they have achieved in our next newsletter. Here are some examples (not intended to be inclusive): Passed a significant level in their music / dance lessons, received first place / honourable mention / etc…at the Kiwanis Festival / any completion. His / Her team won a championship / tournament in…; Her / His church group awarded her/him, etc). This publication has now gone paperless. You can read the September/October issue online at: http://www.calgaryschild.com/ From the Office School Hours Kindergarten AM: Kindergarten PM : Grades 1-6: 8:10–11:00 (Mon-Thurs) 8:10 – 12:10 (every other Friday) 12:10 – 3:00 (Mon-Thurs) 8:10 – 12:10 (every other Friday) 8:10 – 3:00 (Mon-Thurs) 8:10 – 12:10 (Friday) 4 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 Lunch Hour: Recess: 11:30 – 12:25 (no lunch break on Fridays) 9:45 – 10:00 Transportation Please note that every child who rides the School Bus will be put on the bus home at the end of the day unless we receive a note stating otherwise. We are not able to take instruction from a child. Please send a note with your child stating the date, the child’s first and last name, the bus letter, and clear instructions – ie the child is going home with a friend, or will be picked up at the School by a parent. Children should be asked to give bus notes to their classroom teacher who will forward the message to the Office. We are able to take over the phone instruction but ask that parents advise the School as soon as possible, preferably before lunch recess. There is only one administrative assistant in the office after 2:00 pm and we cannot guarantee that every phone call will be answered before the end of day. We also ask that parents do not send messages by email, either to the School’s general mailbox or to the teacher. Again, we cannot guarantee that your message will be seen before the end of the day. Attendance is taken every day on the bus and we only have ten minutes to get every student on board before the buses must leave the School area. If you decide to pick up your child at the last minute please stop by the office to sign the child off the bus. If you do not let us know your change in plans, we have to locate the child, which involves many telephone calls to parents and delays the bus leaving. This means the bus arrives late at every stop and impacts every family. Each year bus routes change according to whoever has registered at the end of June. This year we still have five but stops have changed. If you have not come into the School to let us know which bus and stop number your child will access, please call immediately. Bus maps are always available at the School for pick up and are available online: Bus Maps The Calgary Board of Education has asked Schools to direct parents to the following website for transportation information http://www.cbe.ab.ca/schools/busing-and-transportation/Pages/default.aspx and to the following webpage for more information regarding congregated stops http://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/CBE-moves-to-congregated-stops-for-busroutes.aspx If you have asked your child to wait for pick up at the office after school, please note that it is an extremely busy area, especially at the end of the day. It can be hard to hear walkietalkie communication from the buses due to the sheer number of people waiting and chatting inside. We ask parents to pick up children outside their usual exit doors after school each day. However, if you do need to arrange to pick up your child from inside the building after school, they can wait for you in the main foyer outside the office. If you are picking your child up early due to an appointment for example, they can wait quietly inside the office as parents must come and sign the child out of school. 5 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 6 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 School Fee Structure The Calgary Board of Education has established the following fee structure for this year. Students have written poems in French and in English describing how Terry Fox is a hero and what his legacy of caring, personal activism and hope for a better future means to th them. The assembly will take place on Monday, September 19 at 1:30 where they will listen to inspirational messages brought forth by our masters of ceremony, Sydney (Room 1), Ainsley (Room 2) and Kennedy (Room 3). During the run, starting at 2:15, all students will wear an “I am running for” sticker that identifies someone important to them that has had, or is currently fighting cancer. In this way, the students will gain a better understanding of how cancer impacts many lives. Students will be collecting “Toonies for Terry” and will be reminded that the monies they raise during the run/walk can have a large impact towards finding a cure and improving the lives of many. Thank you in advance to all students and parents who donate funds to the Terry Fox Foundation. Stay tuned to the November Newsletter for the final tally of total donations. We would also like to thank all our parent volunteers who will have set up the course for the run, direct traffic, provide additional supervision, work as our cheering section, join in the activity and help take down afterwards. We appreciate you! Gr. 3 FI Team From the Lunchroom The vast majority of students remain at school for the lunchroom program. Our team of eight Lunchroom Supervisors are pleased to welcome them: Miss' Holly B., Bonny B., Claire D., Vicki L., Anjali P., Mona P., Treena R., and Mrs. (Lynette) Samson - Lead. Lunch break takes place from 11:30 am-12:25 pm for the whole student body. Students have 20 minutes to eat in assigned classrooms, before being dismissed for outdoor activity and socializing. Because this is a fairly short period, it is very helpful for families to provide food that is not only nutritious, but quick and easy to open, enjoy, and clean up - particularly for those students in the younger grades. (Think sandwiches and fresh fruit cut into small portions.) There is no access to hot water or microwaves. A reminder that we are a "Nut Aware" school and ask that items such as peanut butter sandwiches be enjoyed at home and not brought to school, in consideration of those students who may be highly allergic. We are looking for some Grade 6 parents to form a Grade 6 Farewell Committee to help raise funds through three school events and then plan a Grade 6 Farewell event at the end of June to celebrate the kids moving on to Junior High. 12 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 Traditionally the Committee would put on a fall bake sale and a spring bake sale both coinciding with our Teacher Interview nights. As well, the Grade 6's and parents put on a fabulously spooky haunted house at the Halloween Dance in October to raise money for their farewell celebration in June. This is always a huge success and a big tradition at Sundance School! We are looking for parents to help with these events. There is an information binder outlining what has happened over past years, and you can always contact former parents who have organized these events in the past. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved at the school and help plan a fun activity for your Grade 6 child's Farewell Celebration. If you are interested in helping in any capacity, please contact Michelle Stang at [email protected] or 403-651-6231 or Annaleis A. at [email protected] or 403245-0765 as soon as possible. Thank you! Volunteer Coordinator Update: Bonjour, hello and welcome back! I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer break. My name is Abra and I am the Volunteer Coordinator at Sundance School. I really enjoyed this position last year and I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and welcoming new families to our school. Sundance School prides itself in providing the best possible education for its students, a task which is not easily achieved without the help of the many volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to making the school experience a positive one. Sundance School relies on volunteers to assist directly in the classroom, assist with field trips, special events, celebrations, activities, as well as helping from home throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer at any point throughout the school year, please fill out, sign and return the Sundance School Volunteer Survey 2016/2017 form and the CBE Annual Volunteer Registration form. This Volunteer Package will be sent home with your child(ren) for you to fill out and return to the School. These forms will also be available on the Sundance School webpage for you to print and return to the school. Please note, every volunteer whose name is listed on the Sundance School Volunteer Survey 2016/2017 form, must also fill out and sign their own CBE Annual Volunteer Registration form. Both the above mentioned forms are to be completed at the start of every school year (all volunteers are removed from the contact list in June). In addition to completing the CBE Annual Volunteer Registration Form, to volunteer at Sundance or any CBE School, you must possess a valid Police Clearance/Information Check. Once you have had your Police Clearance/Information Check successfully processed, it is valid for 5 years. Please come into the school with your Government Issue 13 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 photo identification if you have not done so within the last 4 ½ years, or if your clearance is due to expire within the next 4 months. The Office will produce a letter to enable you to initiate the volunteer process. If you have recently transferred from another CBE school to Sundance, and you have a valid Police Clearance on file at another school, simply come into the Sundance School Office with a piece of Government Issue photo identification and the Office Staff can transfer your information over to our school. Please note, the CBE Police Clearance/Information Check process at the beginning of each school year can take up to 2 months. So please be patient, your name will be added to our list as soon as I have updated CBE Police Clearance lists and have all your paperwork. You will receive an email from me verifying that you are able to come into the school to volunteer. Please note, at the bottom of the Volunteer Survey Form there is a request for Room Parents. If you are interested in working closely with your child’s Teacher to coordinate volunteers for Field Trips, Classroom help, etc., please put your name down. I am looking to have the Room Parents in place by the beginning of October. I am currently working on arranging Volunteers (with their Police Clearance) to help out at the following upcoming events: Monday, September 19 is the Annual Terry Fox Walk/Run. Thursday, September 22 & Friday September 23 is our first Book Fair of the year. Monday, September 26 is School Photo Day. If you are able to help out with any of the above events, please contact me, Abra, at [email protected] or 403-400-5459, as soon as possible. Merci/Thank you! th Welcome Back Social: Friday, September 16 at 8:00am. We hope to see you there! Watch for notices coming home with further details. 14 | 18 Sundance School September 2016 SPA Coordinator Update Call for October 2016 Casino Volunteers! Welcome to a new school year Sundance Families! Sundance Parents Association (or SPA) is reaching out to all of our school families to highlight the need for volunteers for our upcoming Casino fundraiser on Thursday, th th October 13 and Friday, October 14 , 2016, at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino. Our last Casino event in 2014 raised $70,000 for Sundance School in just two days! We need your help to make this year’s Casino another great success. We are looking for parents, siblings (over the age of 18), grandparents and/or family friends to volunteer to work one or more daytime, evening and late-night shifts over the course of the two-day casino. Advisors and casino staff will be available to train and assist volunteers throughout the event. This event requires over 40 volunteers to be a success, and we have just a few spots remaining. With over 500 students at Sundance School, there are hundreds of eligible volunteers who can contribute to this worthy fundraising event. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know other Sundance families, and get some hands on involvement in raising a large amount of funds in a significantly small amount of time! Sundance School is extremely fortunate to have access to Casino fundraising, which plays a crucial role in the ongoing success of Sundance School. Previous Casino proceeds have directly contributed to the enrichment of our school, including upgraded/replaced playground equipment, SMART Board installation in every classroom, extensive computer/technological equipment, state of the art sound and lighting system in the school’s gymnasium and new gym equipment. Furthermore, Casino funds have helped to subsidize the cost of field trip buses, paid for pre-approved Artists in Residence, and enabled the purchase of home reading books, math and science manipulatives, listening centers, the free-standing message sign outside the school, as well as many more items which enhance the day-to-day experiences our all our students and staff. Over the last 22 years, SPA has raised over $925,000.00 for Sundance School to make the scholastic experience for all Sundance students richer. Please take a look ahead at your October calendar and if interested, please sign up here: http://signup.com/go/SK1nN5. If you have any questions, please contact Michele H. today, at [email protected]! Thank you in advance for your help in making SPA’s upcoming Casino another great success! Parents are able to order for ALL lunches and snacks at one time or individually throughout the year. All orders must be received 5 days before the scheduled date. This is nonnegotiable and orders cannot be accepted after this date. We encourage parents to order all the lunches at once to avoid the disappointment of missing the deadline. However, orders can be changed or cancelled for a full refund up to the 5-day cut off. We will be sending emails to remind parents of the order deadline. However, no paper will be sent home as reminders. Orders are now being accepted for all lunches and snacks. We look forward to a fun year! Jada C. and Michelle S.
