Fifth Grade Newsletter Friday, December 4, 2015 Dates to Remember: ● Sound to Sea payment #2 was due on November 30. Please make plans for the next installment of $65. ● DARE (Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education) graduation will be held at 8:30 am on Thursday, December 17. All parents are invited to attend. We are very thankful for Officer Jack Bowles, who had weekly sessions with our students about making good choices. ● Fifth grade homework help is available at 7:20 for those students who need extra help with attempted homework on three mornings: Math on Wednesday mornings, Science on Thursday mornings, and ELA on Friday mornings. Note that this is for students who have struggled with homework and need help, not a time to do homework. It is for students who come in early on those days, not as all students are arriving. ● Fifth grade students will go to the Christmas Cove sponsored by our PTO ($1-$6 gift shopping opportunity for students) on the following days: Mrs. Mize’s class and ½ of Mrs. Spoon’s class on Dec. 8; Mrs. Weston’s class and ½ of Mrs. Spoon’s class on Dec. 9. Mrs. Spoon: Language Arts T his week in Language Arts we have been working on comparing and contrasting nonfiction text with similar topics. We have been comparing and contrasting text structure, author’s purpose, and other aspects of each text. We have also been reviewing how to identify the main idea of a text while we read. Below is a website with many different links for reviewing and working with main idea. If your student received a grade of 50 on their progress report due to a Reading Log, it means that this was a missing assignment. Mrs. Weston: Math We started a new unit this week. We have been working on multiplying numbers by 10, 100, 1000 and on the relationship they have with place value. We have also begun a unit on exponents. We will continue working on powers of ten and exponents next week. There will be a quiz on Wednesday. We will then begin on Thursday multiplying multi-digit numbers. Wednesday mornings is when I am available for students to come get extra help with their homework. For more practice at home, this is a great website: Mrs. Mize: Science Students are working on applying new vocabulary: momentum, acceleration, speed, velocity, balanced/unbalanced forces, and how each factor affects motion. Newton’s three laws of motion are an integral part of this study. We will have a unit test before the holiday break; please help your child with his or her homework and vocabulary. I am available on Thursday mornings at 7:20 for students who need more help.
