Greetings 12th Grade Parents: Welcome to the start of 12th Grade

Greetings 12th Grade Parents:
Welcome to the start of 12th Grade English. This year will be very exciting and challenging as we help your students
further develop their reading and writing skills.
For the first six weeks, we will focus on the following units:
Unit 1: Epic Poetry and Personal Narrative
This unit focuses on epic poetry. Students will analyze and make inferences about an epic poem's vocabulary, theme,
and sensory language. Students will also compose personal narrative writings while focusing their compositions on the
structure and attributes of the narrative mode including punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
Unit 2: Epic and Narrative Poetry and Personal Narrative
This unit expands the students' study of epic poetry and introduces narrative poetry. Students will study how epic poetry
and narrative poetry have overlapping characteristics, but each have elements and structure specific to each genre.
Students will also continue to compose personal narrative writings while focusing their compositions on the structure and
attributes of the narrative mode including punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
Each unit will include multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge and build their abilities;
however, each will also culminate with an assessment on the days listed. Students failing to show adequate mastery will
receive targeted assistance to help build their skills. We encourage you to speak with your students about what they are
learning in class and continually review their performance via Skyward Access. Moreover, we invite you to use the
following resources to assist you in your conversations with your child:
1. The College Board
2. OWL Purdue
3. Texas Library Association Book Lists
If your child struggles with any of the materials being taught during these units, please urge your students to attend
tutorials with one of the English teachers at this school. Please consult your child’s teacher regarding a tutorial schedule.
Moreover, we would be happy to meet with you to discuss any concerns you may have.
We look forward to working with you and your child to ensure academic success.
Best,
