Christmas Fun Facts by Mason Schroeder 1. Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzer, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female. 2. According to the Guinness world records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was a 221-foot Douglas fir that was displayed in 1950 at the Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle, Washington. 3. Christmas trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold. 4. President Teddy Roosevelt, an environmentalist, banned Christmas trees from the White House in 1912. 5. The world’s largest Christmas stocking measured 106 feet and 9 inches (32.56 m) long and 49 feet and 1 inch (14.97 m) wide. It weighed as much as five reindeer and held almost 1,000 presents. It was made by the Children’s Society in London on December 14, 2007. Page 2 of 6 The Paw Print New Student by Ana Marquardt Casey B. is a new student at Parkers Prairie Elementary school. What you need to wear is a warm jacket, mittens or gloves, hat, boots and snow pants. If you are in fourth, fifth or sixth grade, you have choice to wear snow pants but you will be restricted on what activities you can do if you do not wear snow pants. Here are some reasons you have to wear them. It keeps you warm and it will keep you dry. If it is ten below wind chill, recess will be inside. The office would like you to bring your own gear but they do have some if you don’t. The Paw Print Page 3 of 6 Gingerbread Houses by Carter Plasek The kindergarten kids were asked to bring one special guest to come to gingerbread house building day to help them. There were 46 kids there. The kids built them out of milk cartons of the base and built and decorated it with graham crackers, frosting and candy. While the kids were building them they couldn’t stop, and every minute or so a piece of candy of a spoonful of frosting would slip into someone’s mouth. There were so many kids that the gingerbread building needed to take place in the lunch room. The gingerbread house building went along with their gingerbread man unit where they would read different versions of the gingerbread man. Pride Word of the Month Gingerbread Houses by Luke Geiser To me respect means to be nice to someone or in the lines of that. But there are many things you don’t know about the word respect and in this article, I discovered many of those things. To some people respect is a foreign word. Respect means to be courteous, nice, and happy. Like say you had a bet with a friend and you lost. The consequence (decided by the two friends) was to run around yelling “I eat fried worms!” The respectful thing to do would be to take the consequence. The un-respectful thing to do would be to just forget about the whole thing. If you do the un-respectful thing you might lose your friend. If you do the respectful thing then your friend might respect you more than he already does. Man on the Street by Luke Geiser We asked people, What is your favorite sport? Brock P. says Football Carter R. says Wrestling Hali M. says Basketball Owen H. says Football Page 4 of 6 The Paw Print Christmas Program Brooklynn Wuellner On December 19th is the Christmas program for entertainment from the fifth and sixth graders. It is in the new gym at 9:00am and 1:00pm so make sure you are there. If you are there please show respect and sit quietly. Ms. Pearson has gone through everything you will see and more. Ms. Pearson didn’t have to do this Christmas program but she did so make sure you say thank you to her next time you see her. “I know I will.” Spelling Bee by Alex Koep Can you spell brochure? I can. That was the word I spelled to win the spelling bee on December 10. All the 5 and 6th graders that were in level 1 and level 2 participated in the spelling bee. The top 10 spellers that are moving on are Macy J, Meggie R, Izzy N, Faith A, Josh H, Dawson S, Graham L, Jordan S, Micah A and me, Alex K. Top 10 Spellers moving on to District Spelling Bee Fun with Fitness by John Oberg I interviewed Mr. Noga and asked him some questions about how to stay fit. Here is what he had to say. Mr. Noga 1. Who should do this? He said he thinks everyone should. 2. Why should we do this? He said to do it to respect our self . 3. Where should we do this? He said you can mostly do it anywhere at home and outside. 4. When should we do this? He said 30 minutes every day or more. 5. How should we do this? Can you guess? It’s wrestling! Jason Arvidson is the head coach. “I really enjoy teaching the kids new moves” he said. I think the kids really enjoy him, all of the kids that I saw had a smile on their face. And It’s not too late to join, if you consider joining wrestling, the practices are Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:00 at the high school. The team is going to have some Eagle Bend kids coming over for wrestling which would be a great way to make some new friends, while keeping in shape. I also asked a few kids if they liked wrestling and almost all of them said that they loved it! So keep it in mind and keep wrestling! Battle of the Books by Morgan Mittag I’m talking about battle of the books and I interviewed third grades winning team and I asked why they liked it. Mercedes said that she liked B.O.T.B. because she liked shaking her components hand. Bella said that she liked B.O.T.B. because she really liked the buzzers. Mason said that he liked B.O.T.B. because he liked rubbing it in his sister’s face that he won. Kiley said that she also liked the buzzers. Nolan said that he liked the medals. Gus said that he liked it for the five dollar certificate and the medal. I asked the group how they liked B.O.T.B. and they all said it was ok. 3rd Grade Winners 5th Grade Winners If you’re wondering what battle of the books is then I have the answer. B.O.T.B. is when you get put into teams. Each team has to read the same books and memorize the author. Then they have a battle where they answer questions about the books they read. They get 1 point for knowing the book title, and 1 point if they know the author. The winners get medals and a book fair gift certificate. Grades 3 thru 6 can do Battle of the Books. 5/6 Grade Winners 6th Grade Winners The Paw Print Page 6 of 6 Girls Basketball by Meggie Reigstad It’s the time of year for basketball, and 5th and 6th grade girls are passing, shooting and dribbling their way to victory.
