The Importance of Activities
Activities structure time. They can make the best of a person with Alzheimer's abilities, and may reduce behaviors
like wandering or agitation. But many caregivers are
unsure what activities are appropriate for their loved one,
and may not benefit from the sense of security and togetherness that activities can provide. Caregivers should never
think that activities need to be elaborate or different from
the person's previous routine. Many times, those previous
abilities are the key to making an activity a success.
• Consider time of day. Caregivers may find they have
more success with certain activities at specific times of
day, such as bathing and dressing in the morning.
Whatever the case, your typical daily routine may need
to change.
Planning activities
• Keep the person's skills and abilities in mind. As the disease progresses, be ready to make adjustments.
• Pay special attention to what the person enjoys.
• Consider if the person begins activities without direction. Does he or she set the table before dinner or begin
sweeping the kitchen floor? You may want to incorporate those activities into a daily route.
• Be aware of physical problems. Does your loved one get
tired quickly, or have trouble seeing? If so, you may
want to avoid certain activities.
Approaching activities
• Offer support and supervision. You may need to show
the person how to do the activity and provide simple
directions and encouragement.
• Concentrate on the process, not the result. Does it really
matter if the towels are folded properly? No, what matters is that you were able to spend time together and
your loved one feels useful.
• Assist with the difficult parts of the task. If you're cooking
and the person can't measure the ingredients, finish the
measuring and say, "Would you please stir this for me?"
• Be realistic and relaxed. Don't be concerned about filling every minute of the day with an activity. Your loved
one needs a balance of activity and rest, and may need
more frequent breaks and varied tasks.
• Help get the activity started. Most people with dementia
have the energy and desire to do things but lack the ability to plan, organize and initiate tasks.
• Substitute an activity for a behavior. If a person with
dementia rubs his or her hand on a table, put a cloth in
the hand and encourage the person to wipe the table.
Of if the person is moving his or her feet on the floor,
play some music so the person can tap them to the beat.
Activities
• Focus on enjoyment, not achievement.
• Encourage involvement in daily life. Activities that help
the individual feel like a valued part of the householdlike setting the table, emptying wastebasket or wiping
counters-provide a sense of success and accomplishment.
• Relate activity to work life. A former office worker might
enjoy activities that involve organizing, like putting coins
in a holder or folding church flyers. A farmer or gardener
could take pleasure in working in the garden.
• Look for favorites. Someone who always enjoyed drinking coffee and reading the newspaper may still find these
activities enjoyable, even if he or she no longer completely understands what the newspaper says.
Examples of activities:
• Fold towels. (when the basket is full, take to another
room, mess up towels and bring back in)
• Listen to music and dance together.
• Look at photo albums.
• Sort nuts, bolts, screws or buttons into separate containers.
• Bake & frost cupcakes.
• Play catch in the yard, or toss a balloon inside.
• Sing hymns.
• Sand pieces of wood.
• Go for a drive in the country.
• Collect pretty leaves.
• Brush the family pet.
• Put together a box of different objects to hold and dis-
Effective activities:
• Bring meaning, purpose, joy and hope to the person's life.
• Use the person's skills and abilities.
• Give the person a sense of being normal.
• Involve family and friends.
• Are dignified and appropriate for adults.
• Are enjoyable.

Dear Friends,
The mission of the Alzheimer's Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the
advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce
the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. As you will see throughout this
newsletter, much of our energy and resources are devoted to the portion of the mission statement that relates to providing and enhancing care for all affected by
Alzheimer's disease. This includes our support groups, educational programs, Safe
Return and Helpline, all of which are vital services for individuals and families
touched by this devastating disease.
However, each day we become increasing aware of the importance of the portion of
this mission statement that relates to advancing research. As an organization, we cannot rest until Alzheimer's disease is eradicated through prevention, better treatments
and ultimately, a cure.
The nation-wide Alzheimer's Association is the largest private, non-profit funder of
Alzheimer research and has invested more than $185 million in more than 1,400
projects over the past 22 years. Progress in treating, preventing and finding a cure for
Alzheimer's has been most rapid in the past ten years. Milestones include five new,
FDA approved drugs to treat Alzheimer's symptoms as well as dozens of experimental drugs in development worldwide. Scientists have a better understanding of brain
cells, revealing hundreds of other promising drug targets to help treat Alzheimer's disease. For the first time,Alzheimer's Association science advisors report that with sufficient investment in research, preventing Alzheimer's disease may become an achievable goal within the next 10 years.
Ninety-five percent of
what we know about
Alzheimer's disease was
discovered in the past fifteen years as a result of
research. Unfortunately
we still do not know
what causes Alzheimer's
disease and we do not
anticipate a cure anytime
soon. But for the first
time, there is growing
evidence that we will be
able to intervene in the
disease process to limit its
disabling effects and related cost. Research has
given us many reasons for
hope that one day we
will achieve a world
without Alzheimer's.
Sincerely,
Carol Sipfle,
Executive Director
Thomas Cross,
Board President

The Alzheimer's Journey
cuss, i.e. a seashell, feather, fuzzy pipe cleaner, perfumed
soap, unusual rock, nuts, small bean bag, etc.
• Offer a selection of water-soluble paints and brushes.
• Wrap gifts in boxes for the grandchildren.
• Decorate cookies.
The journey through Alzheimer's is one better traveled
with assistance from others. The Alzheimer's Association
offers people, programs and services as guides for persons
with dementia and their caregivers. The journey usually
begins at the physician's office when the "something's not
right with my loved one" becomes a diagnosis of
Alzheimer's. In these earliest hours and days it is common
to feel frightened, angry, and overwhelmed.
For more information on activities and caring for someone
with Alzheimer's, please call the Greater Iowa Chapter at

News and Updates
Green tea component may fight Alzheimer's
An antioxidant in green tea that researchers think might
fight cancer may also protect the brain from Alzheimer's.
Scientists injected mice with epigallocatechin-3-gallate
and said it decreased production of beta-amyloid, the protein that forms the plaques that clog the brains in people
with Alzheimer's. Several months of injections reduced
plaque formation by as much as 54 percent. The mice
had been genetically programmed to develop an
Alzheimer's-like disease.
Nasal vaccine might slow Alzheimer's
Researchers may have developed the next step in the
long-hoped for Alzheimer's vaccine. This combination of
two medications has already been approved to treat other
conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, was administered to
mice on a weekly basis for six weeks. None of the mice,
pre-determined to have a build-up of beta-amyloid
plaque, had any toxic side affects, and plaque levels were
reduced by 73 percent.
Alzheimer's~Beginning the Conversation is a two-hour
family education program offered monthly to clarify the
information given by the doctor, explain the disease and
the care giving needs faced by those with increasing cognitive and self care losses. Caregivers learn about chapter
and community resources that support care giving and
quality of life.
Another stop on the journey might be Memory Minders.
This is a time limited support group for individuals with
early stage Alzheimer's and their caregivers in the West Des
Moines office. Persons with Alzheimer's learn memory
aids, tips for maintaining independence and overall health
through nutrition, physical and cognitive exercise. At the
same time, caregivers expand their communication skills
and plan for the future.
At the end of the journey, decisions must be made concerning living arrangements, whether it be a facility or
home care. For those who wish to end the journey at
home, the Caregiver's College may be the best route.
Physical care techniques and skills to provide in-home care
for loved ones with end-stage dementia are presented at
this program.
As always, our 24/7 Helpline (1-800-272-3900), support
groups, Safe Return and care consultations are available at
all stages of the journey.
