Riverport YouthBoat provides high
school students with alternative education
programs designed to empower youth,
build character and foster teamwork
through the traditional craft of
boatbuilding and on-the-water activities.
Students build full-sized traditional rowing
and sailing boats that are added to a
growing fleet of small craft that students use
to navigate the waters of the Rondout Creek
and Hudson River.
At the Riverport Wooden Boat School,
students from diverse backgrounds work
alongside skilled craftspeople in an
authentic learning environment.
The Rondout neighborhood of Kingston,
NY has a rich history as a center of wooden
boat building. Riverport YouthBoat students
are continuing this tradition, while building
self confidence and practical skills.
Through the boatbuilding process,
students put STEM skills to work as they
follow building plans, use specialized
tools and materials, and solve problems.
