JOB SUMMARY
This post has arisen as a result of expansion in both clinical and research related work in the
Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre. The post holder will be a qualified nurse experienced

in direct patient care, based within the UHW Haematology Directorate. Previous clinical trial
experience is an advantage, but full training and clinical support will be provided.
Responsibilities will include: participating in the management of patients with inherited and
acquired bleeding disorders as well as patients with thrombosis requiring treatment;
providing information about clinical trials to patients and their carers, patient monitoring and
collection of accurate and timely data about the effects of treatment and patient quality of
life.
The post holder will be expected to be proactive in the education of other healthcare
professionals about clinical trials and will be encouraged to prepare research reports and
updates for local and national meetings as required.
The post holder will work as part of the haemophilia and thrombosis nursing team with
specific responsibility for all nursing activities associated with Clinical Research Trials.
The Arthur Bloom Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre provide both clinical and laboratory
services for patients with bleeding and thrombotic disorders in Cardiff and the Vale of
Glamorgan. The Centre is also the designated Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre for
Wales which is nationally and internationally recognised. The Centre is enrolled in a number
of multi-centre national and international clinical trials, which are ongoing.
Job Purpose:
The Arthur Bloom Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre provide clinical and laboratory
services for patients with bleeding and thrombotic disorders. The service provides a whole
life service to patients and families with inherited bleeding disorders such as haemophilia
and von Willebrand’s Disease.
The centre is currently involved in a number of multi-centre national and international clinical
trials with a plan to increase the current research portfolio. The clinical trial portfolio will
include both commercial and non-commercial observational and drug intervention studies,
including the investigation of new treatments for the management of patients with
haemophilia, inherited and acquired bleeding disorders and platelet disorders such as
immune thrombocytopenia (ITP); in addition new studies are due to open investigating the
treatment and prevention of venous thrombosis as well as the development of new
anticoagulants and management of anticoagulant associated bleeding.
PRINICIPLE ACTIVITIES

The post holder’s principle activities will be to act as Research Nurse with responsibility for
undertaking all nursing activities associated with Clinical Trials.

To participate in the planning, preparation and conduction of Clinical Trials.

To be familiar with all study protocols and amendments.

To work closely with the Principal Investigator (consultant haematologist) and the study coordinator to ensure the smooth running of trials.

To be familiar with all the relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs) and GCP/ICH
relevant guidelines and to adhere to them at all times.

To be responsible for recovery of all patient data.

Regular presentations to other relevant heath care professionals.

Liaising with Haemophilia staff, ward staff and CNS for haematology as necessary.

To keep up to date with current research.

To provide information and education to patients and carers regarding trials.

Demonstrate up to date knowledge and clinical skills in nursing patients with blood related
disorders providing support and information for family members.

Work clinically within the Haematology Directorate to maintain clinical skills

Maintain knowledge of all haematology related nursing developments and research.

Maintain knowledge of current trends of healthcare and developments within the
profession.

To be an active member of the Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre Day Unit seeing a wide
spectrum of adults with bleeding disorders and thrombosis

Act in accordance with legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice and all
Health Board policies and procedures.

To act in accordance with hospital policies and guidelines for health and safety at work.

Arrange for the safe and timely collection, separating, centrifuging and dispatch of clinical
samples and drugs in accordance with local, national and international protocols.

Where the UHW CTU is acting as co-ordination centre for Haematology studies, arrange and
conduct site initiation visits. Assist sites in establishing GCP approved administrative
systems using the WCTU template for the setting up of files, and the WCTU Standard
Operating Procedures (SOPs) as guidance for all aspects of trial activity.

Where the UHW CTU is the co-ordinating centre, carry out regular monitoring visits for
source verification of data collected and to ensure that these centres continue to practise all
trials activities in accordance with GCP guidelines.
