Mentoring is critical. If you ask our mentors, staff and board members, they will agree. Mentoring is not what comes to mind first when we think of what a child needs for survival. We think of food and shelter, perhaps education, but children also need mentors showing them the options they have and teaching the intangibles needed to succeed. 2015 was a successful year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State because we served nearly 600 children in Rhode Island, helping to put them on the path to becoming thriving, successful members of our state. We also started exciting new site-based programs, like the Beyond School Walls Program at Amgen, and the program at McAuley Village, a transitional housing shelter for formerly homeless women and their young children. Each year, our programs expand to serve more children in new and different ways. In addition, 2015 was a successful financial year due to the tremendous support we receive from the Donation Center, our signature fundraising events – The Big Night Out Kentucky Derby, The Big Toast, and Welcome to Summer – as well as funding from individual donors and other smaller fundraising events. The work of mentoring would not be possible without the tireless work of our staff. I cannot thank them enough for the work that they do to change the lives of children in Rhode Island. Letter from the Board President I am also thankful for the work and support of our board of directors. While balancing work and family commitments, they devote their time, energy, financial resources and expertise to the cause of mentoring. As we close out 2015, we look forward to 2016 when we will celebrate our 50th anniversary! Alison A. Reuter Board Chair 2 | BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE OCEAN STATE 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 3 Program Statistics Children served in 2015: 346 children served in Community-Based Program 242 children served in Site Based-Programs By helping children develop supportive relationships with positive role models, we make a direct and lasting impact on their lives. Our Programs Our Traditional Mentoring Program pairs children between the ages of 7 and 15 in one-to-one relationships with adult volunteer mentors. These relationships are called “matches.” Matches meet either weekly or biweekly, and are matched based on similar interests, so planning activities together is easy. A matched Big and Little may remain in the program until the youth turns 18 years old or graduates from high school. Our Site Based Mentoring Program provides mentors to girls and boys in a group setting, either during the school day or after school. This program provides a structured environment, with a focus on academic success. Littles matched with Bigs are: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs 27% 52% Site Based Program Highlights 2015 Amgen and Beyond School Walls Program LGBTQ Program Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State continued its growing partnership with Amgen to bring “Beyond School Walls” to Rhode Island. Beyond School Walls is a nationally implemented BBBS mentoring model which takes students out of the classroom and into the workplaces of their mentors. We paired 20 Amgen Employee Mentors with 20 sixth grade students from Metcalf Elementary School in Exeter, Rhode Island. The students took a bus to Amgen every other week for most of the school year, where they met with their mentors and did bio-chemistry based science projects, culminating in a science fair style showcase at the school for their parents, teachers, community members, and friends. The program was a success, with many students gaining confidence and interest in STEM related careers. This program was funded by the Amgen Foundation. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State saw a need for mentors for LGBTQ youth, and partnered with the Providence branch of Youth Pride International to bring a Site-Based mentoring program to adolescents and teens who identified as LGBTQ. The program ran for 15 weeks and resulted in several successful matches transitioning from the Site-Based to the Community-Based Mentoring model. This program was funded by the CVS Health Charity Classic. McAuley Village Program Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State started a site-based program at McAuley Village, a transitional housing shelter for formerly homeless women and their children under 10 years of age. Through an anonymous donation, the participants at this site were able to experience many activities offsite, including a private cooking class at Williams-Sonoma, a tour of the RISD Art Museum, and a trip to the Providence Police Department. A teacher from Chase Farms visited McAuley Village and taught the group about the life cycle of chickens and even brought in a live hen. The Littles also learned about healthy choices, fresh vegetables, exercise, and the human body. less likely to use alcohol less likely to skip school 4 | BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE OCEAN STATE Our Couples Mentoring Program pairs married couples with a Little Brother. This program was developed due to the ever-growing number of mentors needed for boys throughout Rhode Island. No matter which program, many of our matches last a lifetime! 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 5 2015 Financial Overview Summary 2015 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year Revenue and Expenses 62.39% 75,487 7.25% 59,557 5.94% ontributions, C including in-kind 114,264 10.98% 100,337 10.01% F undraising, net of related expenses 192,087 18.45% 160,077 15.97% 1,447 0.14% 1,717 0.17% 32,354 3.11% 55,275 5.52% Foundations/Grants Other Income Investment Income (including unrealized gains and losses) Total Revenue $1,040,899 100.00% Investment Income Other Income 3.11% .14% Fundraising Contributions $1,002,223 100.00% Expenses $863,093 85.88% $773,770 85.94% Management and General 80,486 8.01% 70,458 7.83% Fundraising 61,469 6.12% 56,110 6.23% Total Expenses $1,005,048 100.00% 85.88% Program Services $900,338 100.00% 8.01% 6.12% 6 | BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE OCEAN STATE Big Sisters Fund 7.2 5% Grants Expenses Program Services 60.07 % 625,260 8% 60.07% 9 10. 625,260 % December 31, 2014 .45 Big Sisters Fund December 31, 2015 18 Revenue Revenue Fundraising Management Russell Frye Lauren Conway Russell Frye, a retired Chief Master Sergeant for the United States Air Force, was named Big Brother of the Year for 2015. Russell and his Little Brother Jaylon often meet over ice cream and focus on homework or studying for upcoming tests. “I know Jaylon is benefitting from our time together and I am learning things as well. I needed to adapt to ‘new math’. It’s not how I did things while I was in school but we’re learning it together.” Lauren Conway, Chief Financial Officer for UnitedHealthcare, was named Big Sister of the Year for 2015. Lauren is an active advocate for BBBSOS, and has served as a board member and on the Match Activities Committee. When Jaylon was asked what having a Big Brother was like he said “I was really shy and often didn’t know how to express myself in certain situations. Now I’m much more confident. I notice myself talking more and more to my friends and more to Russell. I’m so lucky to have him in my life. We have so much fun.” When asked about what it was like at first, being a Big Sister, Lauren said “At first, there wasn’t a lot of conversation and now, it’s hard for Ale and I to stop talking! Just watching her grow and now succeeding at Sophia Academy in Providence, which was something she was apprehensive about, shows how much her world has expanded. She is now celebrating being on the Honor Roll for five quarters.” When asked what is it like to have a Big Sister, Ale said “It was a chance for me to try something new. I get to learn from my struggles, and I know that I have really great opportunities, which I wouldn’t have had before Lauren.” 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 7 Bigs and Littles having fun Collectively, each year, our mentors spend approximately 14,000 volunteer hours with children throughout Rhode Island, helping them make good choices, enjoy childhood, and grow in a positive direction. Whether doing activities on their own, or one of our many agency-sponsored activities throughout the year, the pictures tell the story. “My Little Brother has made such a difference in my life. It’s a two-way street, because he teaches me so much. I’d forgotten what it’s like to see the world as a 12 year old.” 8 | BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE OCEAN STATE 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 9 Scholarship Fund In 2015, six $1,500 scholarships were awarded to “Littles” in the program. The Scholarship Fund is made possible through the generosity of one of our founding mothers, Dr. Dorothy Pieniadz. “Before I met my Big, I was bored and lonely. Since she came into my life, my world has changed. Now I get excited and look forward to our time together.” 10 | BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE OCEAN STATE Scholarship Fund recipients also receive money from the Zabel Yaghjian Berg Fund. Ms. Berg set up this Fund to help recipients “purchase books, and use for other unmet needs.” Ms. Berg, also a founding mother, died in 2010, but her legacy to our organization continues through this perpetual annual gift administered by the Rhode Island Foundation. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 11 2015 Volunteer Mentors Lea Adams Samantha Afonso Hilina Ajakaiye Joseph Albina Vincent Alessi Jordan Allen What made this event so special for us is that Jenneh is a former Little Sister who wanted to give back, and donated 20 percent of the ticket sales to BBBSOS. Matched with her Big Sister Eileen in 2005, today their friendship is stronger than ever. Jenneh raised almost $200 for BBBSOS. Family Fun Day On September 26th, a Family Fun Day was held at Adams Farm, sponsored by Derek Wright and Erin Parker. Proceeds were used to purchase tickets to a Boston Red Sox game, allowing many of our Bigs and Littles to experience a major league baseball game for the first time. Read All About IT! Local authors and Information Technology Specialists Nick Bernfeld and Paul Riendeau held their official book release at Symposium Books in East Greenwich on October 29th. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of “IT Free Fall, The Business Owner’s Guide to Avoiding Technology Pitfalls,” benefit BBBSOS. Over $600 was raised. Haunted Hike/Walk-A-Thon The RI Building and Construction Trades Council hosted a “Haunted Hike/WalkA-Thon” on October 31st (Halloween, of course!) at Roger Williams Park Zoo. Bigs, Littles, staff, union members, media, and more attended the event – many in costume! We are very grateful to Michael F. Sabitoni, President of the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council and Business Manager of the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council, for selecting our organization to benefit from this event, which netted over $8,000. 401 Film Festival The 401 Film Festival was held on November 13th and 14th, and raised over $1,000 for BBBSOS. Festival Director Adam Theroux started the festival for “zero dollar independent filmmakers.” Adam’s aim is to discover new talent, whether independent artists, students or anyone passionate about video production. Adam, who attended New England Tech, now works as a video editor at WPRI – and is an incredible Big Brother volunteer mentor in our program. Dan’s Place In July, Daniel Herbert, owner of Dan’s Place, raised $7,100 for our organization through a motorcycle raffle and pig roast. Pictured (left to right) are Andy Gallonio, Katje Afonseca, and Dan Herbert. #Giving Tuesday On December 1st our organization took part in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Held on the Tuesday after Black Friday, this event was created to inspire people to improve their local communities and to give back in impactful ways. Our event was held at Barnes and Noble in Warwick, RI. The day included a press conference, book signings from local authors, photo opportunities with Miss Rhode Island and Miss Teen Rhode Island, and holiday performances by local musical artists. Please note, this list is not inclusive of all the events held for our benefit in 2015. Other events include dress down days, holiday help, volunteer service days, and clothing drives. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 17 Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation Center Through a combination of convenient home pick-ups, clothing bins and drop-off centers strategically located throughout the state, and targeted corporate- and community-sponsored clothing drives, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State’s Donation Center creates a sustained source of revenue that directly supports the critical mentoring programs of the agency, helping children right here in Rhode Island. The Donation Center collects gently-used clothing and small household items that are re-sold through its valued, strategic partnership with the Savers Corporation. Needed items include all types of clothing, household linens, decorative items, books and shoes. All types of sporting goods, toys, and small appliances are also welcome. These donations help the community in many ways. This innovative program keeps many useful items out of our landfills, it provides support for our mentoring programs and, through Savers, provides good, usable clothing and household items to the community at affordable prices. Donations are solicited through our call center and through postcard mailing campaigns that happen periodically throughout the year. In addition to home pickups, donors may choose to deliver their donations to our corporate headquarters in Cranston, or any of our six drop off centers, which are located in Bristol, Cumberland, Johnston, Middletown, Wakefield, or Westerly. Donations are also accepted on our behalf at the Community Donation Centers located at any of the local Savers stores. Our purple donation bins are hosted by businesses or community organizations throughout the state.
