History of Chanukah
By Evan, Ian
S. and CJ
The story of
Chanukah, although
first written down in
the Christian Bible or
New Testament, was
passed down orally
by Jews for a long
History of Chanukah cont.
Hebrew, went into
hiding. Meanwhile,
the Greek soldiers
destroyed the Temple
and burned all of its
contents- except for
the Eternal Light (a
traditional light in
temples that is relit
constantly and
resupplied with a
day’s worth of oil
daily so it burns
forever) which had
time. It involves the
Ancient Greeks
trying to take over
Ancient Israel and
force the Jews to
worship Greek gods.
Most of the Jews
were forced to, but a
small number
resisted. These

The History of Chanukah Part 2
Chanukah began as a relatively unimportant Jewish holiday
where families would light menorahs and play dreidel. It has
always lasted for eight days, but when it began the only
decoration was a menorah in the windowsill and there were no
presents. Around the time that Santa Claus was conceived and
elaborate presents were left under Christmas trees, Jewish
parents realized that, without a “gift holiday,” their children
would grow bored
with Judaism and
convert to other
religions, causing the
entire culture to be
lost. This is when the
glamorization of
Chanukah began. To
quell their children’s
jealousy at those who
received Christmas
gifts, parents gave
gifts over the eight
nights of Chanukah.
Decorations were
made and Chanukah
grew immensely in
popularity, to the
point where it is the
first Jewish holiday
that most people
think of, and one of
the first holidays that
comes to mind.
Today, some families

of presents. Still,

They dug up the Eternal

had not been destroyed,
but it only had enough
oil to burn for one day
and it took eight days to

Pilgrim Games
After a hard day’s work all the pilgrim children liked to play fun games,
some of them are still played today but have a different name. The
pilgrims played many games. One of the games they played was called
“draughts” this was their name for checkers. “Naughts and crosses”
Naughts in an old word for zero and crosses was used to describe x, this
game is still played today but it’s called tic tac toe. Another game that the
pilgrims played was called “all hid” which is now called “hide and go
seek”. “Lummelen” is
known today as hop
frog or leap frog.
Pilgrim children also
blew bubbles, played
on stilts, used tops,
ran hoops and played
marbles.
Pilgrim children were
fascinated in tongue
twisters. They called
tongue twisters
“giffes”. An example of
these tongue twisters
would be “sally sold
seashells by the
seashore”. “Knicker
box” was another
game fancied by the
pilgrims, it involved the
contestant tried to
maneuver a marble
through a wooden box.
It involved wooden
arches, and the
objective was to get
the marble all the way
through the maze
without having it go
through a passage it
just went through.
Adult pilgrims would
often join in group
sports with their
children. One of the
sports played was

give
thanks for everything

everything that may
come forth. People
celebrate Thanksgiving
in many ways but no

celebrate, Thanksgiving
is meant to be spent
with the people you

called “stool ball”. This
purpose of the game
was for one person to
knock over a threelegged stool with a bat,
while another had to
block him. The last of
the pilgrim games is
“pitching the bar” this
game is a contest of
strength and is very
similar to the “caber
toss” in Scottish
games. The game
involves a long, thick
pole, and the winner
was the person who
could get it farthest.
