He did not ratify it until the Women marched to Versailles. The March of the Women: October 5, 1789 The next day the King moved back to Paris. At the border village of Varennes, he was recognized and eventually apprehended. Word of his attempted flight spread quickly. Crowds lined the street to jeer at him when he was returned to Paris. The King remarked, "There is no longer a King in France." Where do you think they were going? The Sans-Culottes, Paris Mobs popular press portrayed the royal family as pigs demands for an end to the monarchy and the creation of a republic. The Legislative Assembly October 1, 1791 – September 1792 Many young, inexperienced, radical deputies After the King's flight the sans culottes became more politically involved – looked for simple solutions. Radicals on the Left Moderates in the center Conservatives on the right What did they want? – Working men – Eventually any revolutionary citizen.
