APRIL 17-2O, 2O13 WELCOME TO LITTLE ROCK AND THE 2O13 BAPTIST COMMUNICATORS ASSOCIATION WORKSHOP Fellow Communicators, Welcome to Little Rock and the 2O13 Baptist Communicators Association workshop! I attended my first BCA workshop (way back when it was called BPRA) in 1994. I had no idea the lifetime friendships, professional development and connections I would be forging as a result of my involvement. As the planning team put together this year’s workshop, that’s exactly what they intend to deliver, as well. I’m impressed with the slate of breakout sessions scheduled (good luck deciding which ones to attend!) and I’m already looking forward to spending time with friends, making new ones and experiencing the great Southern hospitality of Little Rock. I hope this BCA workshop is more than just an annual gathering of Baptist communications professionals. It’s my desire these few days together will truly be impactful to you professionally, personally and spiritually, and that we would “be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works” (Heb. 1O:24). Thank you for being here. Russ Rankin BCA President @russrankin // 1 WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE HERE Welcome to Little Rock and BCA 2O13. As we gather for BCA’s 6Oth annual workshop, this is the first time that Baptist Communicators Association has met in Arkansas – it’s about time y’all got here! We are pleased you have joined us this week as we spend time together focusing on professional development, networking and fellowship. The theme for this year’s workshop is “Mission: Impact.” Our goal is to highlight the life-changing mission impact our work can have as Christian communicators as well as our professional mission to make a positive impact on behalf of our various ministry organizations. From the opening reception in the historic Old State House and an evening of fun at an Arkansas Travelers baseball game to a variety of breakout sessions plus field trips to Heifer International and the Clinton Presidential Library, our planning committee is committed to making your visit to Little Rock worthwhile and memorable. As usual, one of the highlights will be the annual Wilmer C. Fields Awards Banquet on Friday evening. On a personal note, this week’s gathering is the fourth BCA workshop I have had the privilege to help plan over the years, including St. Louis (1992), Glorieta (1996) and Louisville (2OO2). This year’s program promises to be one of the best ever. Enjoy – we’re glad you’re here! An unplanned pregnancy can be devastating to an unwed preteen or teenager and her family. Arkansas Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries seeks to provide ministry to these girls and their families through the Promise House Maternity Home. The home, which opened in 1991, relocated to Little Rock in 1999, in partnership with Baptist Health Medical Center where the girls deliver their babies. Cornerstone Clinic for Women provides prenatal care for the teens, while pediatric services are made available through All For Kids Pediatric Clinic. Residents attend classes at Little Rock Public School’s alternative school. At Promise House, classes are provided covering topics such as prenatal information, newborn care and independent living skills. Counseling services are available and adoption services are offered through Bethany Christian Services. BAPTIST COMMUNICATORS ASSOCIATION PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS • Each member of the Baptist Communicators Association shall first be a committed Christian, seeking to fulfill God’s call through the ministry of Christian communications. • Each member shall place ministry and service above personal gain or recognition, striving to glorify Christ and extend the ministry of His Kingdom. • Each member shall adhere to the highest standards of truth, accuracy and fairness in every area of communications regardless of personal or professional costs. • Each member shall maintain personal and professional integrity as well as respect for free inquiry and the opinions of others. “Promise House has been a beacon of hope, love and direction for many young ladies,” said David Perry, ABCHomes executive director. “Because of this good prenatal care and emotional support, many babies have had a much better start in life.” • Each member shall seek to produce the highest quality work possible while maintaining appropriate stewardship of available time, resources, skills and personnel. BCA members are invited to participate in this mission project in any of three ways: • Each member shall seek to strengthen his or her professional competence through ongoing professional development. 1. Donate a gift for a baby or a gift for a teenage resident. These gifts can be as simple as diapers or baby wipes. The teenage girls enjoy gift cards (Sonic, McDonalds, etc.), stamps, note pads, photo albums, scrapbooks, costume jewelry, etc. 2. Attend the Baby Shower/Party on Friday, 4-5 p.m., at Promise House. The girls love to have visitors. • Each member shall respect and affirm the rights and opportunities of others without regard to race, color, gender or age. • Each member shall seek to affirm and advance the professional responsibilities and opportunities of fellow members through a spirit of partnership and cooperation. 3. Give directly to Promise House. Donations will be collected during BCA. 12 \\ // 13 LIFETIME MEMBER NOMINEES BCA’s Dana Williamson known as “Queen of Feature Stories” DANA Williamson has retired from the ranks of Southern Baptist communicators after traveling across the state of Oklahoma writing feature stories about fellow Baptists and their commitment to the cause of Christ for the past 44 years. As a young 2O-something, Dana was hired in 1968 as a staff writer for the Public Relations Department of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. In 1994, she joined the staff of the Oklahoma Baptist Messenger where she retired as associate editor in December 2O12. Although diminutive in size, the quiet, graceful Williamson could hold her own with giants in Southern Baptist life. Hired in her state paper role by Southern Baptist legend Dick McCartney, she worked with six Baptist Messenger editors including current editor Brian Hobbs. Over the years, she earned the title, “Queen of Feature Stories,” among the Baptist Messenger faithful. Since 1968, Williamson has been an active member of Baptist Communicators Association, attending countless workshops across the years. She also has served as BCA secretary, scholarship chairman and membership vice president. Encouraged to join the former Baptist Public Relations Association just a few weeks after she joined the BGCO staff, Williamson recalled, “Being young, naive and inexperienced, I had no clue what the organization and its members would mean to me over the years.” She admits that at first, attending the annual workshops was “simply a chance” to get out of the office and travel to different parts of the country. “Then I began to meet other professionals, interact with them and realize the wealth of information I could gain from these workshops as well as from the members.” Reflecting on the impact of her BCA involvement, Dana said, “I think any Baptist journalist or communicator who does not take the incredible opportunities offered by BCA is missing out on something that can change their careers and provide new and exciting venues for growth in their fields.” 14 \\ BCA’s Jim Burton has held diverse communication and mission roles JIM Burton joined the Southern Baptist Brotherhood Commission in February 1986 as Baptist Men’s Editor. His duties included editing World Mission Journal, producing curriculum and promotional materials, and producing an annual Baptist Men’s Teleconference. In 199O, World Mission Journal became Missions Today. Burton helped reestablish the agency’s relationship with Baptist Press and started the Office of Communication. In 1994, Burton became the director of Men’s Ministries. Among the resources was Legacy Builders, a weekend men’s retreat that also became a trade book. Eventually, an estimated 7O,OOO men attended Legacy Builders retreats. With the formation of the SBC North American Mission Board in 1997, Burton became the Volunteer Mobilization Team director. The team started OnSite, a quarterly publication promoting short-term mission trips in North America. Beginning in 1986, Burton worked with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR), typically serving as a public information officer (PIO) during major responses. SBDR was under Burton’s purview for about 1O years at NAMB, and he often served in the PIO role to serve media including the New York Times and appearing on cable television news shows as a spokesman. Following Hurricane Katrina, Burton contributed a chapter to a collegiate textbook on management describing how Southern Baptists respond to disasters. In 2OO7, Burton returned to Mission Education to serve as its director at NAMB. During the next three years, the team developed or revised 13 curriculum resources and implemented a social media strategy. A longtime member of BCA, Burton has served in leadership roles for the association and has been recognized for award-winning work in the annual W.C. Fields Awards Competition. Burton is a 1978 graduate of Western Kentucky University with majors in photojournalism and business administration. He received a Master of Divinity degree with communication arts concentration from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1985. He will receive his Doctor of Ministry degree next month from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Before entering vocational ministry, Burton was a staff photographer at The Dallas Morning News; Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal; Messenger-Inquirer, Owensboro, Ky.; and Jackson (Tenn.) Sun. // 15 In memoriam: Leonard Hill loved God, family and friends In memoriam: Don Rutledge captured “windows on the soul” LEONARD DON Hill, a career writer and editor of various Southern Baptist publications, died Feb. 18 in Nashville, Tenn., at age 83. A longtime Baptist Communicators Association member and former program vice president, Hill was inducted as a BCA lifetime member in 1995. According to his obituary in The Tennessean, Hill “had three great loves in his life: God, family and sports.” In addition to his work and ministry as a Baptist communicator, “family and friends knew Leonard by his quick wit and humorous puns, and always felt a part of his life through his visits and frequent written correspondence. Leonard played many sports during his life and continued to play tennis through his senior years. He was an avid Vanderbilt sports fan, and could always be seen with his wife in their black and gold at every Vandy home game.” Hill served many years as managing editor of the Baptist Program, a monthly publication long published by the SBC Executive Committee that was distributed to 5O,OOO Southern Baptist pastors, education directors, music directors, chaplains, missionaries, denominational workers and professors. After the magazine was succeeded in 1993 by the public relations journal SBC Life, Hill worked as an assistant in the Executive Committee’s program planning department and with seminary extension, a program to deliver theological education to pastors and lay leaders who did not hold seminary degrees. During his years of service with the SBC Executive Committee, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Nashville. A native of Oklahoma, Hill was a journalism graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University. He earned the doctor of theology degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1962. Prior to his work with the Baptist Program, he was an editorial staff member of All Church Press, in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Baptist Standard in Dallas. 16 \\ Rutledge, renowned photographer who told the global story of missions through his camera lens for several generations of Southern Baptists, died Feb. 19 at age 82. Rutledge, a longtime member of Baptist Communicators Association, was inducted as a lifetime member in 1997. He was honored with numerous BCA awards over the years, including the prestigious Fon H. Scofield Award for significant achievement in photography. Traveling throughout the United States and to more than 14O countries over four decades, Rutledge captured quiet moments of humanity and mission ministry in hundreds of classic photographs taken for the former Home Mission Board and Foreign Mission Board. He called his best photos “windows on the soul.” Born on a farm in Depression-era Tennessee, Rutledge discovered an old box camera that belonged to his uncle – and pursued the call of photographing the world and the people in it. He began to shoot photo stories as a freelancer before joining Black Star, then the nation’s top photojournalism agency, covering stories for such magazines as LIFE, LOOK and Paris Match. He became internationally known when he shot the photographs for Black Like Me, John Howard Griffin’s 1961 book about his experiences of racism in the last days of the Jim Crow-era South. The book became one of the most famous chronicles of the struggle for change during the civil rights era. Rutledge left Black Star in 1966 to shoot photos for the HMB. Over the next several years he traveled to all 5O states, capturing the work of missionaries and the needs of the people they served. In 198O, he joined the FMB as a special-assignment photographer, continuing his photographic ministry worldwide for another 15 years before retiring in 1996. Rutledge received more than 3OO awards for his work and inspired hundreds of young photographers, writers and communicators – many of whom he mentored personally – to follow in his footsteps. // 17 WELCOME TO LITTLE ROCK’S RIVER MARKET RIVER MARKET RIVER MARKET ATTRACTIONS • SHOPPING • DINING • LODGING •SERVICES SERVICES RIVER MARKET DISTRICT ATTRACTIONS • SHOPPING • DINING • LODGING • ATTRACTIONS • SHOPPING • DINING • LODGING • SERVICES ATTRACTIONS • SHOPPING • DINING • LODGING • SERVICES RIVER MARKET RIVER MARKET ATTRACTIONS • SHOPPING • DINING • LODGING • SERVICES 17 4 17 17 4 12 4 15 12 12 12 12 15 8 15 15 8 8 8 8 7 8 7 14 8 14 1 1 25 S.
