ON STAFF DRIVERS
Thousands of hours of research have gone into making
the Minibus Lite a truly lightweight minibus. Extensive
use of advanced composites has resulted in all three
specifications weighing below the 4250kg threshold,
the point at which a minibus licence (D1) is required.
(assuming you are driving uder a Section 19 permit)
The advantage of this to schools is it allows more staff to
drive the minibus without incurring the cost of expensive
D1 licence training.
For example, training for a D1 licence costs
approximately £1000* per person and the national pass
rate is just 60%. Over 5 years the additional cost for
training four staff per year would be £20,000 - nearly
the cost of a new minibus.
*the figure of £1000 is an estimate based on the DSA test fees, the typical
cost of a 2 day training course to prepare individuals for the test, and the
cost to replace a member of teaching staff over the period

Q: Is it light weight
because of weaker
materials?
A: No. The hours of
research and testing were
spent looking at materials
used in other industries...
without giving too much
away to our competitors!
While we have spent time
looking at saving weight
we have always kept safety
as paramount. The vehicle
has not been changed
- all we have done is to
convert the inside to a
16-17 seater minibus while
focussing on keeping the
weight of the components
down.
Q: Will it be difficult to
arrange insurance?
Q: Does the vehicle meet
current regulations?
A: The schools we have
supplied with vehicles have
not reported to us that they
have not been able to get
insurance.
A: Yes,Minibus Lite has
been developed and built
to fully comply with the
VCA regulations which
came into force in October
2011. Every Minibus Lite
we produce is inspected
and tested by DVSA. Upon
completion of the tests
the vehicle is issued
with an IVA Certificate
(Individual Vehicle
Assessment). The issuing
of this certificate means
the vehicle is fit to be
used on the highways and
conforms to all current
legislation.
Q: Will my new
minibus pass its first
MOT as a minibus?
A: Assuming you look
after the vehicle it
will pass an MOT.
There is nothing in the
conversion that would
prevent the vehicle
from passing an MOT.

LEGALLY DRIVING A MINIBUS
Q: Is the vehicle
registered as a
minibus and not a
panel van?
A: Yes, the vehicle
will be registered as a
“minibus” on the V5
registration document.
To be able to drive a particular type of vehicle you need
entitlement for that category on your driving licence. To
ride a motorcycle you need to have A1 entitlement, to
drive a bus you need D entitlement and to drive a minibus
you need D1. The date you passed your test will determine
under what circumstances you can legally drive a minibus.
The reverse of your driving licence will show you your
personal entitlements.
Did you pass your test before 1 January 1997?
Q: Does it meet Euro 5
low emission law?
A: Yes, all Minibus Lites
meet Euro 5 low emission
law. The 2.2 litre HDi
Peugeot engines used in
the MinibusLite are Euro 5
compliant.
Q: Can we tow a trailer
on a B car licence?
A: You would need to
take a trailer test to
tow.
Drivers who passed their car test (referred to as category
B entitlement) before 1 January 1997 were automatically
given D1 entitlement to drive a minibus with 9 to 16 seats
(17 seats to include the driver) assuming they are driving it
not for hire or financial reward.
a) you have held a category B licence for at least 2 years
and are over 21 years old.
b) you receive no payment or consideration for driving the
vehicle other than out-of-pocket expenses.
c) the minibus has a gross weight not exceeding 3500kg (or
4250kg with reduced mobility)
If you have passed your test on or after 1 January 1997 and
you wish to drive a minibus with a gross weight in excess of
3500kg*, or 4250kg with reduced mobility, you will have
to take and pass a D1 driving test which can be costly and
inconvenient.
* the bus operator will
require a Section 19 permit
Did you pass your test after 1 January 1997?
If you passed your test on, or after, 1 January 1997 you
were not granted D1 entitlement. However, the category
B entitlement you would have from passing your driving
test allows you to drive a 9 to 16 seat minibus (17 seats
including driver) under a Section 19 permit provided the
following conditions are met:
