After our wonderful time apart we will leave taking our light into the world. ~ Nancy Cantrell Rev. Currently serving New Life UMC since 2012 and her current charge added Hopewell UMC, in 2013. Sarah Clapp Gilpin, Vocalist Sarah has been singing jazz, soul, blues and original compositions in various venues in Knoxville over the past two decades, while also singing and songwriting with the contemporary band at Cokesbury. Justin Haynes, Accompanist Justin came to Knoxville several years ago to receive his Bachelor's in Jazz, studying under the great Donald Brown, and is now pursuing a Master's in Business while also coordinating music worship at Middlebrook Pike . Both of these musical individuals have served Christ in music, while also branching out into the world to sing and play wherever music may take them. * Please see commodities list on Page 3 2016 — New Year — New Opportunities through Christ Sue Clapp, President: Knoxville District UMW I love January and February as I always pledge more time to God in the NEW YEAR and I ind more time (too cold outside! ) in those months to meditate each day, be it morning, afternoon or night. Do you ever meditate? For me, this word “meditate” means focusing on a scripture verse in my mind for at least 30minutes or more, so God can speak in pictures, or lights, or give me a new insight, or maybe silence being bathed in His love. Or, I can get comfortable and close my eyes and dwell on thanking Him as long as I can and then rest in His presence with no request to see how He will speak to me or not speak to me... Let me know how this goes for you…new insights are welcome! In 2016, help some of your youger women become enthralled with one of O D UMW hands-on mission projects – such as Wesley House or Susannah’s House. Take them on a ield trip there. Maybe your unit can provide childcare for your church’s younger women to meet once a month or every other month at your church or at a local restaurant. Let’s pool ideas that are working and share! Our District UMW has a scholarship for a younger woman to attend the SIS RETREAT in March or SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE in April. Maybe your unit can sponsor 2 young women to attend either or both of these events. LET’S MAKE THIS HAPPEN IN 2016!!! Scholarship applications should be sent to me and the district executive team decides on the scholarship recipient winner. 2016 CALENDAR . !!! There are date changes from the calendar you received at our November Annual Meeting at Fountain City UMC last November. P T A A O D A C E . Blessings of fellowship and faith await you at each event! You have been assigned a District Team Member who will be your unit’s shepherd again this year. This sister will assist you with meeting planning or she will do a devotion at one of your meetings or just attend one of your meetings and support you in what you are doing. Jeremiah 29:11 ” ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ “ May you be strengthened by our Lord’s words in your resolve to serve others. *Please see my footnote on how you can do your part for one Social Action issue; on Page 6 Your servant in Christ, ~ Sue Clapp 2016 DĎĘęėĎĈę UMW TĊĆĒ SčĊĕčĊėĉ UēĎęĘ Officer Name Email phone ̷Ǥ ͺǦʹͻͺ ̷Ǥ ͺͲͷǦʹͳͳͻ ̷Ǥ ͷͻǦͲͳʹ ̴̷Ǥ ͻͲͳǦͶͲͻǦͲͶͷͻ ̷Ǥ ʹͻ͵ǦͶͳͶͺ ̷ Ǥ ͻʹʹǦͻͺʹ ̷Ǥ ͻ͵͵ǦͺͲʹ ʹͲʹͶ̷ Ǥ ͷͷǦʹͳͳ ̷Ǥ ͷͻͳǦʹͶ ͵Ͷ͵Ͷ̷Ǥ ͻͲǦͳʹͲͳ ̷Ǥ ͺͺǦͷͷ ̷Ǥ ͻͳǦʹͷͺ ̴ ̷Ǥ ͻͶǦͺ͵ʹ ͷʹͻͺͳ̷Ǥ ͻ͵Ǧͺͷ͵ Ǥͷ̷Ǥ ͷʹͷǦͳͲ ͳ̷Ǥ ʹͶǦͳͺ ̷Ǥ ʹ͵ͲǦͳͻͷ ȗ Page 2 Church Ǧ Church ȗ ǡȗ ȗ Ȁ ǯ ȋǡȌ Time Apart cont. I am a member of Church Street UMC. Please contact me for info, to help with a program, or to offer suggestions as to ways we can be more involved in our mission work. Social Action Workshop, Save the Date! The Oak Ridge and Knoxville Districts of UMW will be hosting a social action workshop on Saturday, May 14, at Beaver Ridge UMC. We will be studying and learning more about racial justice and creation care. These two issues have been major focuses of UMW for quite awhile, and we hope to bring new information, current resources and meaningful, creative ideas for speaking out and for taking action. We ask that you make an effort to attend this workshop and encourage others to come, too. We, as United Methodist Women, must lead by example and this workshop will offer knowledge, tools and ideas for us to do just that. Hopefully you enjoyed a good Thanksgiving and Christmas with your family and friends. (What…you ate too much!?!?) If you haven’t already done so, please reply to the request for the number of books read by ladies in your unit, send to Mary Lou or Sharon a list for 2015. The book highlighted this month was also mentioned by Nellie Bragg earlier this year. “Finding God in a Bag of Groceries” is a book written by Laura Lapins Willis about her experiences while working in the food pantry in Sewanee, Tennessee. This book gives a glimpse into the lives of several of the people who receive bags of groceries. This is a true story that chronicles the pathway taken by Mrs. Willis as she tries to determine her life’s direction. If you’ve volunteered in a food bank and distributed bags of groceries to those in need of this kind of help, you will connect with this book. If you haven’t, this book may “stir up” your volunteer spirit! Nellie has informed us that books from 2011 list can be counted thru 2016. We wish for each of you a most Blessed and Peaceful New Year. ~ Mary Lou Heath ~ Sharon Grigsby Program Resources, Co- Coordinators Page 5 SĔĈĎĆđ AĈęĎĔē 2016 UMW CĔēċĊėĊēĈĊ Ćēĉ DĎĘęėĎĈę EěĊēę CĆđĊēĉĆė UMW 133 Steps to Sustainabbility Guidee 2016 UMW DISTRICT AND CONFERENCE CALENDAR February 5,6, Fri/Sat Conference Executive Committee meetings, Conference Executive Committee— Trinity UMC/ Morristown, TN (Sue attends) February 27, Saturday Bookwalter UMC, 10-12, “Time Apart” (short district meeting immediately after) March 12-13 Sat/Sun Conference Sisters in Service Retreat, River Plantation Convention Center, Sevierville, TN ( district scholarship for young woman who has not been before) April 9, Saturday TABLESCAPES-(fundraiser for Wesley House summer program)-First Farragut April 22-24, Fri-Sun Conference Spiritual Enrichment Experience, Session 1, Session 2 at Lake Junaluska, NC (district scholarship for young woman new to this event) Princciple 1: Acceessibility Ask if youur meeting veenue complies with the Am mericans Withh Disabilities Act (ADA), aand ask the ffacility manager to show you how during your site inspeection.
