We will be meeting this year February 27, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. at Bookwalter UMC. The Knoxville District UMW
are representing 32 United Methodist churches, we will come together bearing gifts for three local agencies; Partners
for Children, Susannah’s House and Wesley House. PLEASE SEE Commodities List in this January Knoxville Notes,

The women will come for a Time Apart from their busy schedules for a time of renewal. They will join their voices
in singing, prayer, communion and listening to God’s word.
Rev. Teresa Atkins McClure, pastoring, New Life and Hopewell UMC churches, will present a special message based
on the theme, for the conference “Feed My Lambs”. After our wonderful time apart we will leave taking our light into
the world.

2016 — New Year — New Opportunities through Christ
Sue Clapp, President: Knoxville District UMW
I love January and February as I always pledge more time to God in the NEW YEAR and
I ind more time (too cold outside!
) in those months to meditate each day, be it
morning, afternoon or night. Do you ever meditate? For me, this word “meditate” means
focusing on a scripture verse in my mind for at least 30minutes or more, so God can speak
in pictures, or lights, or give me a new insight, or maybe silence being bathed in His love.
Or, I can get comfortable and close my eyes and dwell on thanking Him as long as I can and
then rest in His presence with no request to see how He will speak to me or not speak to
me... Let me know how this goes for you…new insights are welcome!
In 2016, help some of your youger women become enthralled with one of O D
UMW hands-on
mission projects – such as Wesley House or Susannah’s House. Take them on a ield trip there. Maybe your
unit can provide childcare for your church’s younger women to meet once a month or every other month
at your church or at a local restaurant. Let’s pool ideas that are working and share!
Our District UMW has a scholarship for a younger woman to attend the SIS RETREAT in March or SPIRITUAL
ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE in April. Maybe your unit can sponsor 2 young women to attend either or both
of these events. LET’S MAKE THIS HAPPEN IN 2016!!! Scholarship applications should be sent to me and
the district executive team decides on the scholarship recipient winner.
2016 CALENDAR
.
!!! There are date changes from the calendar you received at our November Annual
Meeting at Fountain City UMC last November.

. Blessings of fellowship and faith await you
at each event!
You have been assigned a District Team Member who will be your unit’s shepherd again this year. This
sister will assist you with meeting planning or she will do a devotion at one of your meetings or just attend
one of your meetings and support you in what you are doing.
Jeremiah 29:11 ” ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to
harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ “
May you be strengthened by our Lord’s words in your resolve to serve others.

I am excited to be the Social Action Coordinator for
the Knoxville District this year. I feel that as a group of
determined, committed women we can do most anything,
and I believe that others in our church, in our community,
and in our world, look to us to lead by example. I am a member of Church Street
UMC. Please contact me for info, to help with a program, or to offer suggestions
as to ways we can be more involved in our mission work.
Social Action Workshop, Save the Date!
The Oak Ridge and Knoxville Districts of UMW will be hosting a social action
workshop on Saturday, May 14, at Beaver Ridge UMC. We will be studying and
learning more about racial justice and creation care. These two issues have been
major focuses of UMW for quite awhile, and we hope to bring new information,
current resources and meaningful, creative ideas for speaking out and for taking
action. We ask that you make an effort to attend this workshop and encourage
others to come, too.
We, as United Methodist Women, must lead by example and this workshop will
offer knowledge, tools and ideas for us to do just that. More details will be coming
in the next newsletter but please mark your calendars NOW.

PėĔČėĆĒ RĊĘĔĚėĈĊĘ
Greetings to all UMW sisters:
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year is approaching! Hopefully
you enjoyed a good Thanksgiving and Christmas with your
family and friends. (What…you ate too much!?!?)
If you haven’t already done so, please reply to the request for
the number of books read by ladies in your unit, send to Mary
Lou or Sharon a list for 2015.
The book highlighted this month was also mentioned by Nellie
Bragg earlier this year. “Finding God in a Bag of Groceries” is
a book written by Laura Lapins Willis about her experiences
while working in the food pantry in Sewanee, Tennessee. This
book gives a glimpse into the lives of several of the people who
receive bags of groceries. This is a true story that chronicles the
pathway taken by Mrs. Willis as she tries to determine her life’s
direction. If you’ve volunteered in a food bank and distributed
bags of groceries to those in need of this kind of help, you will
connect with this book. If you haven’t, this book may “stir up”
your volunteer spirit!
Nellie has informed us that books from 2011 list can be counted
thru 2016.
We wish for each of you a most Blessed and Peaceful New Year.

2015 Annual Meeting Summary
2014 It looks like there were 85 preregistered approx..16
registered at the door.
2015 This year we had 120 preregistered & 13 registered
at the door. (108 for meals)
When we had nursing programs we always added 10%
more meals than we needed & it usually worked out. It
looks like it works for this group too.
We paid for 120 meals & there was a lot left, esp. meat.
I think women at lunch don't eat like church supper
people.
We had a budget of $1250 for the annual meeting
We had $655 in registration - that would mean 135 paid

The Mission focus for the Holston Conference for 2016
is Jubilee Project. Jubilee Project is in Handcock County,
TN. It is one of the poorest counties in the state. “Jubilee
Project envisions a world...where everyone has enough,
Where those who have more share with glad and
generous hearts, and where those who have less ind
relief from oppression and hope for the future. Jubilee
Project, Inc. Core values are: Food security, Shelter,
Access to clean water, Health, Self-worth and love.” The
following projects are the focus of the work of Jubilee.
JUBILEE WATER PROJECT - The water program for low
income - to no income families has multiple rami ications

Jubilee will continue to endeavor to work at collecting
applications from families/households in need, evaluate
the needs, work to connect resources to families, and
to resolve/improve the water quality in the homes in
Hancock County
JUBILEE YOUTH PROGRAM - Jubilee Youth Center
provides entertainment outings, mission trips, and faith
development to its members. Jubilee Youth also have
the opportunity to work on their leadership skills, to
participate in faith building activities, and to help those
in need in our area by performing home repairs through
Jubilee Project’s Housing Development Program.
BREAD OF LIFE PROGRAM - The “Bread of Life” program
is based upon John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the
bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry,
and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” This
is a program provides hot and healthy meals for youth
on Friday nights. Thanks to a partnership with Second
Harvest and USDA foods we are providing monthly boxes

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY - Jubilee is a partner with
Second Harvest Food Bank of Gray, TN on a monthly basis.
Food is distributed by Second Harvest the third Tuesday
of each month at the Old Flat Gap School in Treadway.
Emergency food boxes are also distributed as needed at
the Jubilee Center in Sneedville, TN. Included in these
boxes are toiletries and personal hygiene products. A
family may receive an emergency box once a month if
needed.
Churches may send contributions to The Holston
Conference with instructions to forward their donation
