Introduction
Background
Welcome to the world of Arkoss! This booklet is the manual
on how to complete the game in the most straight forward and
complete manner. And for those of you who like the numbers, the
guide also provides you with all the statistics about each of the game
items and creatures.
You may be curious how the game came into being. Well let
me tell you it was a lot of hard work. The project team consisted of 5
students (4 coders and 1 artist/coder) from DigiPen Institute of
Technology. Each semester we have a game project class, in addition
to the full course load and homework assignments, where we try to
pull together all that we are learning and make a game out of it. Each
of us were on different project teams during the first semester of
school, but by the time semester two was on the horizon, we were
already talking about forming a team together.
Arkoss was the culmination of many extra hours, many
headaches, many caffeine breaks, and our second and third semester
game projects. It was our game of “firsts.” It was our first attempt at
sound, first attempt at heavy graphics, first attempt at scrolling, first
attempt at DirectX, and our first attempt at such a large scale game.
Most of Arkoss was completed during the first phase (the second
semester). The game had a fully functional editor, 23 levels, four main
characters, the complete user interface/menu system, sound, and the
Search And Destroy artificial intelligence method (S.A.D - the pun
was intended).
The second phase (third semester) was spent adding two more
characters (Hiro and Nepharia) and extending the storyline, another
60+ maps (the Isle of Krum), implementing a better AI system,
incorporating additional features into the editor, fine tuning, polishing,
and preparing the manuals, etc.
The five of us still can not believe we finished the game and
that we still have fun playing it. We hope you have as much fun with
it as we do.

Description of Sections
The strategy guide is broken down into three parts. For those
of you who want to make sure you got everything, cruise through
either Part I or Part II. Maps of the places that you explore can be
found in Parts I & II also. Each map will detail where monster
spawner locations are, and exit locations for each of the major maps
(house maps were not included). For those of you who just need a
little help surviving the numerous battles, or are simply curious what
tricks we use to make it through the game, then skip over to Part III.
Please note that the walkthroughs are structured so that you
will complete the game quickly. It will take you to the correct places,
the correct people, and minimize any need for exploration. You
should still try to kill as many monsters as you can since you will need
the weapon proficiency points in order to fight the tougher monsters
later in the game. Also, you may ruin some of the game’s fun by not
exploring without the help and talking to all the NPC’s and figuring
out quests on your own. But hey, no problem! You can simply read
snippets from each section when you need the help. Remember, above
all....have fun!! If you’re smiling then we’ve done our job.
Part I - Isle of Arkoss
This section of the manual will walk you through each of the
levels on the Isle of Arkoss. The start of each level description has
what type of monsters you will encounter on the map and what their
Hit Die Levels are. You are also shown which items you should get
before finishing the level. There may be other items on the level but
are not necessary for finishing the game or are not that important for
the character. The maps for the relevant areas are also listed, in case
you are lost our curious what the lay of the land is.
Part II - Isle of Krum
This section is similar to Part I but this time we guide you
through the much larger island of Krum.
4
Part III - Tips, Tricks, & Stats
The third section is devoted to the little tricks we developed
while playing the game. You can also take a look at the item statistics
so you can see what you really have in that adventurer’s backpack. Or
you can review the creature attributes so you know what you are up
against out in the wilderness. And finally, if you really just want to cut
the chase and cheat, we tell you all about the cheat/debugging
commands.

PART I-Arkoss
(Level Design by Anthony Carotenuto)
Trent
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
None.
Gate Key, Mountain Map
This is the town you start in. A little to the south of where you
start is the Helper NPC, “Anthony”. He can answer your questions
regarding basic features of the game and game controls. If you talk to
the various NPC’s you will learn about the island of Arkoss and the
evil that plagues the land.
Okay, lets get started. We are going to get the two items we
need from this map even though we won’t use them until much later.
6
Head East towards the edge of town. In the middle of a clump of
bushes you will see an old man sitting on a tree stump. This eccentric
old guy is Theseus, the apothecary for the town of Trent. Simply talk
to him and ask for his help. Once he asks you who told you to talk to
him, answer “Marek”. He will then place the map on the ground for
you and give you some much needed experience. Stop talking to him,
pick up the map and head to the South from where you are. You will
come to a small house with a single barrel in front of it; go to the front
door to enter the house. Inside you will find Garrett. Talk to Garret to
get the gate key from him (ask him about King Osric, ask him about
the key, and swear you will kill the Duke). He will drop the key and
give you some experience. Pick up the key and head out of the house.
You may want to visit the apothecary or the armory before you
leave town. It all depends on how confident of a fighter you are.
Ranged weapons will make your fighting much easier. Once you are
finished exploring the town, head North towards the destroyed village
of Keswick.
7
Keswick
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Zombies- (Level: 2, 3)
None.
There are a few weapons scattered about the town and a small
pile of gold. If you didn’t have enough money to buy something you
wanted in Trent then go ahead and find the items (quarter staff, mace,
dagger, pile of gold). If you get them all and sell the weapons you can
get anywhere from 100 - 140 gold pieces (depending upon how much
gold you get from the pile since it is random).
Your goal for this map is to find the entrance to the catacombs,
which is approximately in the center of town. You might as well beat
down the zombies that are walking around the town before you head
down into their lair below. They will be the easiest things you ever get
to kill for the remainder of the game.
8
Catacombs
Level 1:
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Zombies- (Level: 3, 4)
Silver Key, Locked Chest, Padded Armor
Ooooh, the catacombs! Spooky! Undead creatures shuffling
through the dank corridors in search of human flesh to feed their
eternal hunger. No need to fear, they are no match for you, right?
Keep in mind that you are still in the early stages of adventuring, so it
is probably a good idea to kill everything you come across so you can
gain your experience levels to make you a better fighter.
As you follow the corridor away from the stairs you will come
to your first intersection. Head south. Simply explore the map, all the
while heading West. You will eventually encounter three small rooms
that are on the North side of a horizontal corridor. Inside the farthest
9
west room is the padded armor and the silver key. Put on the armor, it
will make you much harder to hit. Notice the chest on the other side of
the wall? That is where we are headed next. If you find the stairs
going down to level 2 DO NOT go down them yet! You still need to
get that locked chest of goodies for this level. So head back the way
you came.
You will eventually come back to the intersection where you
headed south the first time. This time continue heading North. As you
continue down the corridor you will start heading West again. You
will finally enter a room with four support posts (don’t get
surrounded!). In the south western corner of the room is the locked
chest we are after. If you haven’t already done so, click on the Key
button to turn the unlocking mode on. You can leave it on if you want.
Why would you ever want to turn it off you ask? Sometimes you may
need to choose which chest to unlock with the key you have. If you
are fighting it can be easy to accidentally bump into the wrong chest
and use up the key. Anyway, inside the chest you will find a blaster,
the magic missile spell, a kalar, and some other miscellaneous stuff. If
you want to develop your technology or spell casting proficiencies
then arm one of them now, since it is easier to build proficiencies early
in the game.
Once you have these items head back around to the stairs that
lead down to level 2. For those of you who are treasure hunters, there
were also 3 healing potions, 3 piles of gold, and a sack with some gold
and a gold ring in it on this level.
10
Level 2:
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Ghouls (Level 4, 5)
Zombies- (Level: 4)
Ring of Death, Potion of Agility
Okay, head to the East to go get the potion of agility. Along
the way you will meet a new type of enemy, ghouls. A little tougher
than zombies, they should still not represent too much of a problem for
you. Once you get the potion of agility (green potion), head back the
way you came and then head south. Start to head in an easterly
direction as you go. You will eventually curve north towards the stairs
leading down. Don’t head down them just yet (you’re so gung ho!)
Go get that brown sack just to the north. Inside it you will find the
Ring of Death. The ring does not mean your death, but implies much
pain and suffering for your enemies as it will increase the amount of
11
damage you deliver to them. You automatically put it on when you
picked it up. Now head down the stairs.
Treasure Seekers: There was a chest in a room with stairs
leading down, don’t worry about getting that yet, you need to get to it
from the level below. Also if you wanted to get all the goodies on this
level there is a long sword, two healing potions, a bowie knife, a long
bow, and two piles of gold.
Level 3:
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Ghouls (Level 5, 6)
Rusty Key, Ruby Key, Fireball spell
You have now reached the last level of the catacombs.
Adventurer beware! There are a lot of monsters on this level, so you
may want to save the game. When you are ready head over to your
right a few steps and pick up that rusty key. You don’t really need it
12
but it can’t hurt to have it. Head north, turn left, and then directly
south. While you are heading south stay to the east at the fork. All the
way at the end are two dead bodies and the Ruby key. Pick up the key
(after you beat down those nasty ghouls that guarded it, uh oh, did I
forget to warn you about those guys.) Well after you get the key head
back north to the stairs that you passed that head back up. There you
will find a chest containing the fireball spell. Be very careful when
using this spell. You can kill yourself very easily with the fireball if
you get caught in the explosion. It will take some practice to learn
how to use this spell in narrow corridors without killing yourself. It is
not a necessary skill to learn, so don’t worry. That is all for the
catacombs so you can head back out when you are ready.
If you want to use that rusty key then head south from where
you picked it up (near the stairs that brought you down to level three to
begin with, on the East side of the level). The chest contains potions
that will increase your maximum hit points. It is not necessary to get
these but they will prove helpful in the long run.
Now that you are out of the catacombs and back in Keswick
head East for a quick trip into the mountains.
13
Cartnell Mountains
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Trolls (Level 10, 11), Orcs(9,10)
Plasma Rifle, Potion of the Ogres
Although the monsters on this level are fairly high level there
are not too many of them. If you find that you just can’t get through
then come back later after you have finished Bailford Keep. As soon
as you enter the mountains head east. There are two techniques that
work to get you through. The first method is to step forward a little bit
at a time to cause a monster to spawn. Then back up so that you can
kill them one at a time. The other technique is to quickly head east to
where the path narrows so the Trolls have a hard time getting to you
and you can safely pick them off with a ranged weapon. Keep heading
east and follow the path as it winds to the Southeast. At the end of the
path you will find some more Orcs and Trolls to defeat. Now get the
14
red potion and the plasma rifle. The Potion of the Ogres will increase
your strength. The battle axe is heavy and slow, so unless you have a
high melee proficiency it is probably not worth picking up. Once you
are done head back out of the mountains to Keswick. Once in
Keswick head South to Trent. Then head East out of Trent into the
swamp.
Other items on the level are the Robe of Fizbaan, three piles of
gold, two healing potions, a throwing axe, a mace, and a long bow.
Swamp
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Swamp Things (Level 5, 6),
Mud Slimes(5, 6)
None
15
This map is simply for fun! Run around and kill swamp
beasties. While you are at it you can pick up four healing potions, a
quarter staff, and a pile of gold. Keep heading East out of the swamp
and across the bridge. Keep heading East to Bailford Keep.
Bailford
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Orcs (Level 8)
None
After you get passed the Orc guards approach the main gate of
the Keep walls. Turn the Key button on (if not on already). Use the
key you got from Garret in the town of Trent to open the gate (simply
walk into the gate to use the key). Enter the keep to begin your quest
to defeat Duke Caphis.
If you wander around outside the Keep walls you can pick up a
crossbow and a healing potion.
16
Keep Level 1
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Orcs (Level 6, 8), Dark Knights (Level 7)
HobGoblin Archers (Level 6)
2 Guard Keys
Head North into the main hall. You will be attacked by some
orcs and some dark knights. There is a white guard’s key in the small
chamber where the Dark Knights are coming from (the room in the
upper right corner of the main hall, there are stairs leading up.) Pick
up that key and head down the corridor to your left as you leave the
chamber. You will come across some Orc guards that are guarding a
locked wooden door. Open the door using the Guard’s key. Get the
Guard’s key inside the room. Unless you picked up the extra ruby key
from the catacombs in level 3 you will need to proceed to the dungeon
17
level to get another ruby key. Use the guard’s key to unlock the barred
gate to the left of the room you are in. This is the entrance to the
dungeon levels.
The only other items on this level are additional guard keys.
These keys can be used to unlock the dungeon cell doors to gain
access to the creatures inside. You may want to clear out the keep of
monsters so you can continue to gain experience. There is no need to
pick up the other weapons on this level since there are better ones to be
found on other levels.
Keep Dungeon
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Orcs (Level 8), Ghouls (Level 8)
Ruby Key, Locked Iron Chest, Plasma Blade
The moans of beaten prisoners float on the dank and musty air
of the dungeon. The dark fungus covered walls are a sign of the
18
terrible life a prisoner would have when thrown down here. You need
to first find the ruby key. Head south from the entrance to the
Dungeon level. The main corridor will turn left, follow it. The second
jail cell on the northern wall has a ruby key hidden in the hay. Simply
open the door and pick it up. Head back the way you came in. As you
turn the corner to head North down the main corridor there is a secret
passage behind the discolored stone on the right side. Go into the
passage, on the other side you will find some piles of gold and the
plasma blade. Head back up to the first level when you are done.
Once back on the first level go into the small chamber to your right
and unlock the iron chest. Inside you will find a healing potion, a
potion which raises your maximum hit points and the robe of the magi.
Now head back to the main hall in the direction you originally
came. When you get to the small chamber where you got the first
guard’s key, go up the stairs.
19
Keep Level 2
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Orcs (Level 8), Dark Knights(Level 11),
Hobgoblin Archers (Level 8)
Duke Caphis (Level 13)
Jeweled Key, Crystal Key, Secret Treasure Room,
Locked Iron Chest
You are getting closer to challenging the Duke. Head North
from where you entered the level. Note that the outer walls of the
keep can only be entered through the corner tower staircases, the only
thing to do in those sections is to kill monsters. Thus directions will
be given as if you entered the level from the main hall chamber. When
you head north from the stairs you will enter the grand dining hall.
Defeat the Archers and Orcs and then head to the northwest corner of
the room. Once there you will find a crystal key. Now head south to
the throne room. To the south of the throne is a jeweled key. Kill
those that stand in your way.
20
Once you have the two keys, it is time to face the Duke.
Unlock the wooden door just below the staircase you came up at the
beginning of the level. Slowly step inside the room trying to draw any
Dark Knight guards into the open. Once you dispatch those pesky
Knights, charge in and challenge the Duke. Once the Duke is killed
unlock the iron chest in the corner (using the crystal key). Inside you
will get a couple of magic rings and some potions.
Now go to the upper right corner of the Duke’s chamber.
There is a secret passage behind the discolored wall which leads to the
treasure room. Once inside you will want to pick up the small sacks
and then the iron chests. If you are strong enough you may want to try
and put the Steel Scale armor on. You may get hit more but it will
absorb the damage a lot more than the padded armor ever will. You
should experiment with the different armors until you find one that
protects you the best (depending upon your fighting style.) If you
want additional experience points you should head down to the first
level and then come back to Level 2 through the corner towers to clear
out the creatures. If you want to continue your killing spree then
continue up into each of the corner towers on level three.
21
Keep Level 3
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Orcs (Level 9), HobGoblins(Level 9)
None
There is not much to this level. Each of the corner towers have
several monsters in them. Each of them have a guards key in them, so
if you feel like opening more of those dungeon cell doors, or locked
weapons closets you can collect the keys. Once you are finished head
back out of the keep to the outside world. When you get outside you
have a choice of actions. You can either head north to the Prairie or
head West back to Keswick so that you can go to the Forest.
22
Prairie
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Jackelopes (Level 3, 4)
None
This level is simply a transition between Bailford and the town
of Everdale. If you have the pulse wave rifle you may want to use it
against the jackelopes. It is an excellent weapon for clearing
numerous low level creatures in close formation (provided your
technology proficiency is high enough.)
23
Everdale
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
None.
None.
The town of Everdale is a rest stop for the weary adventurer.
The arduous journey from Trent could not be easy, so if you need
healing potions you may find them at the apothecary shop in the
northern part of town. There is nothing else to do in this level other
than talk to NPC’s and restock on any supplies you need.
24
Forest
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Trolls(Level 12), Ghouls(Level 9)
Rusty Key, Lightning Spell, Ring of Kings, Ring
of Hermes, Steel Scale
There are three sections to the forest. Let’s start on the right
side. If you are not on the right side of the map then head south back
to Keswick and re-enter the forest from the NorthEast corner of the
Keswick map. Once you are in the correct side of the forest defeat the
two awaiting ghouls and pick up the brown sack on the ground. Inside
of it you will find the Rusty Key. Now head back to Keswick and go
over to the NorthWest corner of the map so you can enter the left side
of the forest.
Now that you are on the left side of the forest map, head a little
to the North. Fend off the trolls and the ghouls! Once you have
beaten them into submission open up the locked chest with the rusty
key. Inside the chest you will find the lightning spell. The spell is
25
good for doing a lot of damage to a couple of creatures in medium to
close range. Try it out, but beware of the casting time required to use
it.
Now head back south to Keswick and head over to the center
portion of the forest. If you didn’t get the steel scale armor from the
Keep then now is your chance. Head North through the forest,
following the path. Be ready for the ghouls that are going to ambush
you. Once you reach the small clearing a couple of Trolls will attack
you as well. After you have trashed them, go open the chest. Inside it
you will find the two rings.
Continue to head Northeast towards the entrance to the Lost
Caves. Before you enter the caves, I would recommend that you save
the game.
For those of you who just can’t get enough of those treasure
goodies, you can also find a mace and chain, 4 healing potions, 2 piles
of gold, a halberd, and a brown sack of miscellaneous stuff.
26
Lost Caves
Level 1
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Stone Golems (Level 12)
Sword of Kaeless, Crystal Key, Stone Ring
The first level of the lost caves is fairly straightforward. You
need to head to the NorthEast corner of the map. Along the way the
main corridor will have small alcoves with miscellaneous items. If
you search them out you can find the following bounty: studded
leather, healing potions (5), throwing axe, mace, potion of purity, and
a pile of gold.
Once you are in the Northeast corner you will come across a
small alcove which has a crystal key and the Sword of Kaeless. Now
take the crystal key and head back the way you came. The first
27
passage that heads North to a small alcove will have a locked iron
chest in it. Use the crystal key to unlock it. Inside you will find the
Stone ring and some other goodies. The stone ring makes your skin
tougher so you can absorb more damage.
Now head South and East (again retracing your path). The first
corridor that leads south to an alcove will have an exit to the second
level. Take this exit to Level 2.
Level 2
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Stone Golems (Level 13)
Ruby Key,
Nova Spell OR the Rocket Launcher
Head south away from the exit staying to the West side of any
forks in the pathway. The first alcove that opens up to the west will
have the ruby key in it. Grab it and while you are at it you may as well
28
grab the yellow potion in the main pathway as well. Go back to the
main pathway and continue following it in a Southern direction. The
cavern will gradually turn East. You will soon come across a large
opening to the North. You will need to defeat several golems. Once
you have killed them you will have to make a choice on which weapon
you want to get. You may want to save the game and try out both of
them to see which one you actually like. If you have the magic
proficiency, Nova is a devastating spell. If you have the technology
proficiency, then the rocket launcher is like a souped up fireball. Most
players go for the Nova spell. If you want the Nova spell then you
need to unlock the chest to the right. If you want the Rocket Launcher
then you need to unlock the chest to the left.
Once you have acquired your new found weapons, you can
proceed down the stairs to Level 3. You do not need to go to level 3 to
complete the game, but if you want to get the Robe of Illusion then
this is the only place to get it.
29
Level 3
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Stone Golems (Level 9,12),
Magma Golem(Level 11)
Robe of Illusion, Ruby Key, Jeweled Key
This level is fairly small but that simply means that you will
have less room to fight the golems in. You will probably need to kill
them all first before opening any of the chests, since you will be
surrounded fairly quickly. Also, the chests need to be opened in a
certain order otherwise you will be one key short to open the last one.
Be wary of the Magma Golem, he tosses fireballs at you and it will not
take many to kill you. When fighting the Magma Golem, keep moving
and try to keep it on the move as well. If it is moving that means it
won't be firing.
Go to the Southwest alcove. Use the crystal key you got from
Level 2 to open the iron chest. Now take the jewel key you get from
30
that chest to open the iron chest in the NorthEast alcove. You will get
another Jeweled key from this chest. Take that key and use it to open
the chest in the NorthWest alcove. The last chest on this level is
unlocked. After you have opened all the chests you will have gained
several other items and more importantly the robe of Illusion. On your
way back through the second level, use the Ruby key you found in one
of the chests and get the other weapon you had to leave behind (Nova
or the Rocket Launcher.)
March your way back out of these miserable caves and head
back to the Forest. Once there, you will need to get to the right side of
the Forest map. You can try and find the break in the tree line to sneak
over there or you can head back to Keswick and then back up through
the NorthWest corner. Now go East to head up to the Mountainpass
level which leads to the tower.
31
Mountain Pass
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Trolls(Level 12), Ghouls(Level 12)
None
When you enter the level you will be blocked by a row of
boulders. Since you got the Mountain map from Theseus at the
beginning of the game, you use this as a "key" to unlock the boulders
blocking you way. This will now give you access to the rest of the
map. Simply follow the path as it curves around. You will eventually
come to the tower. Simply enter the tower when you are ready.
Treasure hunters note, there are only two healing potions on this level.
Tower of Ze'ev
This tower is full of surprises. The enemies that you fight are
mostly demons. The lessor demons fight using hand to hand
techniques. However, the greater demons use a much more potent
32
attack. They use a fireball spell, which can cause significant damage.
It would be wise to take these one's out as fast as possible or avoid
them all together.
At the top of the tower is Ze'ev himself. He poses a significant
threat to your quest. After defeating him you can then enter the
nearest portal and proceed to the island of Krum, which is where the
heart of the pervading evil lies.

Lessor Demons(Level 13)
Greater Demons(Level 13)
Kevlar Body Suit
You start out in a small square room with the exit back to the
outside below you and a strange teleporter above you. Save the game
at this point. Once you step inside that teleporter there is no way to get
back. Now step into the teleporter.
33
You have been teleported to a new room. For this next part,
kill off the lessor demons in this room before you head out in to the
adjoining hallways. Once you finish them off head East. As soon as
you enter the room travel the perimeter in a clockwise fashion, just
keep moving - don't stop to try and fight the Greater Demons (unless
you think you can take 'em). On your mad run around the platform
that the Greater Demons are standing on, you will find a Ruby Key
make sure you get it and keep moving around the platform until you
arrive at where you came in from. Run out and head West.
Once in the hallway find and enter the small teleporter. It will
take you to another room which looks very similar. Don't worry about
getting the chest, it's empty. Travel east down the corridor, fighting
demons along the way. You will eventually come to a locked door.
Use the Ruby key to open it. Inside the room you will find the Kevlar
body suit. It is the best over all suit of armor, so you may want to put
it on. Enter the teleporter that is inside of this room.
You will be teleported back to where the Greater Demons were
throwing fireballs at you. Immediately run south and down the
corridor that connects to this room from the south. Follow this corridor
to the end and take the stairs that lead up to Level 2.
By the way, there are a total of 8 healing potions to be found
on this level if you were keeping track.
34
Level 2
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Lessor Demons(Level 13)
Greater Demons(Level 13)
Kevlar Body Suit
This level is a maze. A wicked creation from the
Necromancer, it is used to delay would-be attackers long enough for
his evil minions to hunt them down and kill them. Use the map from
this guide to find the shortest path to the teleporter which then takes
you to the stairs for level three.
Once you step into the telelporter you will be transported to a
small room with Greater Demons in it. Immediately run East to the
stairs to make it out alive! Trying to fight the Greater Demons in such
close quarters is next to impossible.
35
If you are adventuresome and want to get all the treasures from
this level, the count is 9 healing potions, 1 red potion, 4 yellow
potions, 1 green potion, 9 piles of gold, and a chest of gold.
Level 3
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Lessor Demons(Level 13)
Greater Demons(Level 13)
Zombies(Level 10, 13)
Silver Key, Crystal Key, Jeweled Key
You start this level by having to choose between three portals.
Before you step through any of them, pick up the Silver Key. Then go
through the second portal (the one in the middle). You will be
transported to a long corridor, nicknamed "the gauntlet." Head South
and follow the corridor to find the crystal key. Once found, you can
then use your silver key to open the door to gain access to the portal.
36
Step through it and you will be teleported back to where you first
started.
For those of you who want to be really sneaky, if you go
through the portal on the far right you will be teleported to a den full
of zombies. Find the Jeweled key in the south western corner of the
room. Do not use this key to open the locked chest, therefore you will
have an extra jeweled key which can be used on level four to get
passed the Necromancer without a having to kill him.
Now go through the first portal (the one on the left side of the
screen). This will teleport you to a large room with a lava moat. Kill
the Greater Demons and zombies. Once you have killed them all,
sneak around the edge of the moat and get the Jeweled Key. The
jeweled key and the crystal key are needed for the next level. Now
head down to the teleporter to go to level 4 of the tower, the final stage
for the isle of Arkoss.
37
Level 4
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
Lessor Demon(Level 8)
Greater Demon(Level 8)
Jackelopes (Level 10)
Magus Ze'ev(Level 15)
None
Be on your guard; you will be attacked right off the bat by
some demons. Simply use your keys to open the doors and kill all the
creatures that get in your way. As soon as you are ready, head down
the short corridor to the Southwest towards the Necromancer's
chamber.
The tried and true method to fighting the Necromancer is to
charge into the room and keep moving in a circular pattern just out of
his firing range all the while firing your weapon. Other players try to
stay just inside the chamber entrance and fire out at the Necromancer.
Once he drops the jeweled key, use it to unlock the door to allow
38
access to the portal. This portal will take you to North PortTown on
the isle of Krum.
If you got the extra jeweled key from level three you don't even
have to fight the mage to the death. You can simply run into the room,
unlock the door, and run into the portal (very sneaky, but very
cowardly).

(Level Design by Tim Berry)
Port Town North
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:
None.
None.
You begin at the docks of Port Town, in the northern sector.
An inn lies to the north and a smith shop to the south. If you follow
the path to the east you will see a large group of trees. Just to the right
of these trees stands Flint. Talk to him and he will inform you that his
brother is in need of help and that you might be able to help him
accomplish his task. He informs you that his brother Les waits in the
Black Forest. Which is located far to the southeast. A good place to
start your quest, but there are many others to talk to in this town.
40
Also, if you are in need of some studded leather armor or
padded, there is a hidden spot between the small grouping of trees just
above the fountain. This will get you some gold if nothing else and
closer to getting every item.
Port Town South
Monsters Encountered:
Items to Find:

None.
Following the path to the south takes you to the southern part
of Port Town. Just located to the west are the barracks. Gregor stands
outside and tells you of the orcs who have been plaguing the town. He
offers a reward if you can kill enough orcs in their camp. This camp
lies directly to the south.
41
Start to head to the east and you will come across a well. Just
south of this lies the apothecary, Winston. He will inform you that he
needs a rare herb for one of his potions. This herb can be found in the
Udder Swamp, which lies to the southeast. It can be found upon the
body of a Swamp Thing. After killing the Swamp Thing and getting
the herb return to Winston to collect your reward.
Lastly, before you leave the town a healing potion can be found
beside a tree in the southwest. A useful trinket for any adventurer. It
would be useful to also make a visit to the orc camp; it will be a long
time until you have a chance to come back.
Scrub Lands

Items to Find:
Jackelopes (level 10,11)

Orc Scalp
(maps shown below)
The most important feature of the Scrub Lands is the orc camp.
This is located in the south-most portion of the area. To get here
simply walk south from Port Town. You will cross one zone and then
arrive at your destination. Many orcs inhabit this camp so be careful.
The orc who drops the scalp is located at the bottom of the
camp. He will spawn just a little to the left of the southeast hut. After
receiving the scalp you should proceed to talk with Gregor.
Remember he is located in the southern portion of Port Town.
These orcs also drop loot for those of you money grubbers.
You can sell this loot at Port Town and then purchase some healing
potions for you journey. It would also be wise to roam these lands
killing everything you can. This will help you advance your level to
be able to proceed smoothly through the lands.
When you are ready to leave the scrub lands be sure to head to
the southeast. Do not go through the White Forest. This area is too
42
tough for you at this time. Heading to the southeast will take you to
the Plains. This is the next area to help you get closer to your goal.

The Plains are the only way to get to the other towns. Upon
entrance, you are in the northern section of them. To the south is the
town of Dunar. To the northeast of the Plains lies the Udder Swamp
and to the southeast lies the Shore. This area acts as more of a
junction than anything else… well there are always monsters to kill
and experience to be gained.
48
There is also a hobgoblin camp located slightly to the southeast
of your entry point into the north Plains. Many hobgoblins patrol the
camp and fire arrows so be careful. They can put up quite a fight. But
killing them all will provide an abundance of experience.
Once again, for those greedy people, a bag containing a dagger
can be found at the camp. Thus placing you one step closer to
acquiring every item.

Dunar

None.
The town of Dunar has few major buildings. The only one of
importance is the bar, run by the barkeep Erhardt. He provides
nothing but a little conversation, but his bar provides some of the best
food around.
After exploring the town a little you will come across
Cassandra. She can be found in the middle of the town just above the
path. After a little chatting, she informs you that there are some ruins
in the Tranquil Desert. She does not know what was there exactly, but
it might be worth checking out. After all when has exploring not been
rewarded?

Rare Herb
(maps shown below)
The Udder Swamp can be a dangerous place, but careful
players will be able to overcome the obstacles. To the west lies the
Plains, from which you most likely entered, and to the east lies the
Black Forest. South lies the Shore.
One of the quests you have already received can finally be
achieved at this location. In the southwest sector lies the Swamp
Thing, which drops the rare herb. After killing this Swamp Thing you
can pickup the herb and head back to Winston in Port Town. He will
reward you for you kind deed.
In the northeast sector of the swamp there is a special cave
entrance. This leads to Thorgaurds Cave. You will not want to enter
this cave yet (unless you want to die horribly). Just keep it’s location
in mind for later when you are strong enough. There is still much
more adventuring to do.

The Shore rests at the southern section of the island of Krum.
To the north lies the Udder Swamp, west the Plains, and east the Black
Forest and the town of Seaside.
In the west sector, a group of orcs have created a camp from
which to pillage nearby towns. It would be wise to exterminate this
menace. Not only will you receive some valuable experience, but loot
will surely be acquired as well. After they have been vanquished you
should be ready for the Black Forest. But first it would be wise to
travel to Seaside for some more potions and information.
Bronze plate armor can be found by the orc camp in the
western sector. Along beside this armor is a heal potion which will
most likely be used immediately.

This town has little purpose but to allow you to sell your loot
and purchase some more healing potions. I have placed Samantha
here just to test your kindness. The only thing she will do is be rude
and give you an opportunity to kill her. But the experience penalty
will still apply. As soon as you sell your loot continue through the
northeast exit of the town and into the Black Forest.

If you want to travel to the ruins you will have to pass through
the White Forest. This is directly east of the Scrub Lands. Acting as a
boundary between the Tranquil Desert and the Scrub Lands, it
prevents most undead from venturing towards Port Town.
Upon entering the forest just head progressively east.
Eventually, you will arrive at the Tranquil Desert. However, feel free
to stop and exterminate all creatures. The experience can always be
used.

This area contains the toughest undead around. Ghouls and
zombies roam around in abundance. Be warned though; the desert is
large and hard to navigate through.
The major feature of the desert is its ruins. It is located just to
the east of the heart of the Tranquil Desert. Here is where Wraith can
be found. He asks to be killed for he has been the victim of a horrible
accident. He was a powerful mage who cast a great spell… but it
backfired. This misfortune cost him his humanity. Now he wanders
64
the ruins forever bound to them. Should you chose to grant him his

Many creatures inhabit the Black Forest. Hobgoblins, trolls,
mud slimes, orcs, jackelopes, and even lessor demons. It is a very
large forest and many travelers have lost their life to it. To the south
lies the town of Seaside, west lies the Udder Swamp and the Shore.
Les, Flint’s brother, can be found in the forest. If you travel to
the eastern portion of the forest, northeast of the entrance from
Seaside, you will see a group of tree's making something like a
pathway. By walking through the path you will come to a small
section of forest. It is here where Les is located. By talking to him
you will receive a key that will allow entry to the Ancient Castle.
After receiving the key you should continue to explore the
forest just a little. This will allow you to get some more experience
before traveling to Thorgaurds Cave. When you feel you are ready
head to the northeastern sector of the Udder Swamp and proceed north

Thorgaurds Cave, the only way to get to the Ancient Castle, is
perilous indeed. Bodies of the dead can be seen all around and blood
stains the walls. It provides an indication of what is to come. This
area can be like a maze, so it would be wise to follow the maps. Also,
in order to survive, keep moving. It’s harder for the monsters to get
you if you move fast.
77
If you see a chamber full of gold, don't feel too bad that you
cannot get to it. It was a joke on the part of the Level Designer. If you
want the last laugh, check out Part III of the guide to see how you can
sneak in there anyway using a cheat command.

(castle maps shown below)
Upon exiting Thorgaurds Cave you will come to a clearing.
No monsters inhabit this clearing. The only features are the Ancient
Castle and many trees. It is important to save before entering the
Ancient Castle itself for the creatures that inhabit it are tough indeed.
Gather your strength and charge forward.
There is only one type of creature that wanders these halls. It
is the invisible stalker. The spawn animation will be the only thing,
which alerts you to its presence. When you see it, you must start to
attack. However if you use spells such as the fireball, you will most
82
likely die. Since you can not see the creatures, if they are close to you
the explosion from your fireball will engulf you as well. Lightning,
Nova, and a good melee weapon will be your best bets if you get
surrounded. It will take skill and ambition to make it through this
castle.
As you plunge into the depths of this castle it will grow darker.
You will know you have reached your goal when you come to a
furnished chamber brighter than the rest. A lone chest lies upon the
ground. Inside this chest is the storeroom key. “What am I to do with
this?” you ask. Remember the locked door in Port Town? It is here
you must travel to and fight that which has been plaguing the land.

and embraced its darkness. You must kill him in order to bring peace.
But, what happens if Bishop kills himself?

Part III
Tips & Tricks
Choose the proficiency you want to develop, early. Most
characters have a primary proficiency. Mynx's primary is ranged
weapons. If you like to also use magic, then as soon as you find a
magic spell, start using it. If you wait until later in the game it will be
much harder to develop the skill with tougher monsters.
The secret to staying alive is to keep moving! Most monsters
attack with melee weapons so if you can keep moving they will have a
much harder time of attacking you. If you let monsters surround you
or corner you, it will be much harder to fight your way out.
If you are using the fireball spell, fire it while walking away
from your enemies. This will help to keep you from walking into your
own spell (a common and fatal error by young spell casters).
If your fighting style is close combat, your best bet for armor is
the Steel Scale or Bronze Plate. If you prefer to use ranged weapons it
is best to either use one of the robes, the padded armor, or the studded
armor (which ever will give you a higher Armor Class Rating). In all
cases if you can get the Kevlar Body suit, it will provide you with the
best overall protection, no matter what fighting styl e you prefer.
Some monsters have ranged attacks. The trick to fighting these
guys is to use your long ranged weapons against them (long bow,
rocket launcher, fireball, blaster, magic missile). Since your weapons
have a longer range, you can keep firing at them while staying just out
of their reach.
As soon as you start the game (and you are not playing
Nepharia) buy a bow from the weapons shop. This will help you fight
monsters before they can get close to you to do any damage.
87
Certain characters are easier to start out with than others. Use
Mynx to get familiar with the game. If you think you have mastered
the game, try playing with Hiro, who is much tougher to play.
Most monsters are near items. If you see a lonely item in the
middle of a room- don't rush in to get it. Simply take a few steps
toward it to try and get the monsters to appear a few at a time. This
can be boring, but as you get better at fighting you will be able to
handle more creatures at a time.
Enabling Cheat Commands:
Press the ALT and F1 keys simultaneously (while playing the
game). This will pause the game and bring up a small dialog box.
Simply choose a command from the Command droplist box. Then fill
in the appropriate data for the command and away you go. A short
description of the command is given at the bottom of the dialog box to
help you understand what the command does. This is the same box
that was used while testing the game. There are also various check
boxes that you can select to activate other debugging/cheat features.
Note that the A/I Descriptions check box will cause a significant drop
in the frame rate on most systems.
How to get the gold from Thorgaurds Cavern. Activate the
cheat command dialog box. Select the check box marked TileCheck
Off. Then simply walk through the walls of the map to get the gold.
You can turn the tile check back on by deselecting the check box.
