This booklet is the manual on how to complete the game in the most straight forward and complete manner. And for those of you who like the numbers, the guide also provides you with all the statistics about each of the game items and creatures. You may be curious how the game came into being. Well let me tell you it was a lot of hard work. The project team consisted of 5 students (4 coders and 1 artist/coder) from DigiPen Institute of Technology. Each semester we have a game project class, in addition to the full course load and homework assignments, where we try to pull together all that we are learning and make a game out of it. Each of us were on different project teams during the first semester of school, but by the time semester two was on the horizon, we were already talking about forming a team together. Arkoss was the culmination of many extra hours, many headaches, many caffeine breaks, and our second and third semester game projects. It was our game of “firsts.” It was our first attempt at sound, first attempt at heavy graphics, first attempt at scrolling, first attempt at DirectX, and our first attempt at such a large scale game. Most of Arkoss was completed during the first phase (the second semester). The game had a fully functional editor, 23 levels, four main characters, the complete user interface/menu system, sound, and the Search And Destroy artificial intelligence method (S.A.D - the pun was intended). The second phase (third semester) was spent adding two more characters (Hiro and Nepharia) and extending the storyline, another 60+ maps (the Isle of Krum), implementing a better AI system, incorporating additional features into the editor, fine tuning, polishing, and preparing the manuals, etc. The five of us still can not believe we finished the game and that we still have fun playing it. We hope you have as much fun with it as we do. 3 Description of Sections The strategy guide is broken down into three parts. For those of you who want to make sure you got everything, cruise through either Part I or Part II. Maps of the places that you explore can be found in Parts I & II also. Each map will detail where monster spawner locations are, and exit locations for each of the major maps (house maps were not included). For those of you who just need a little help surviving the numerous battles, or are simply curious what tricks we use to make it through the game, then skip over to Part III. Please note that the walkthroughs are structured so that you will complete the game quickly. It will take you to the correct places, the correct people, and minimize any need for exploration. You should still try to kill as many monsters as you can since you will need the weapon proficiency points in order to fight the tougher monsters later in the game. Also, you may ruin some of the game’s fun by not exploring without the help and talking to all the NPC’s and figuring out quests on your own. But hey, no problem! You can simply read snippets from each section when you need the help. Remember, above all....have fun!! If you’re smiling then we’ve done our job. Part I - Isle of Arkoss This section of the manual will walk you through each of the levels on the Isle of Arkoss. The start of each level description has what type of monsters you will encounter on the map and what their Hit Die Levels are. You are also shown which items you should get before finishing the level. There may be other items on the level but are not necessary for finishing the game or are not that important for the character. The maps for the relevant areas are also listed, in case you are lost our curious what the lay of the land is. Part II - Isle of Krum This section is similar to Part I but this time we guide you through the much larger island of Krum. 4 Part III - Tips, Tricks, & Stats The third section is devoted to the little tricks we developed while playing the game. You can also take a look at the item statistics so you can see what you really have in that adventurer’s backpack. Or you can review the creature attributes so you know what you are up against out in the wilderness. And finally, if you really just want to cut the chase and cheat, we tell you all about the cheat/debugging commands. 5 PART I-Arkoss (Level Design by Anthony Carotenuto) Trent Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: None. Gate Key, Mountain Map This is the town you start in. A little to the south of where you start is the Helper NPC, “Anthony”. He can answer your questions regarding basic features of the game and game controls. If you talk to the various NPC’s you will learn about the island of Arkoss and the evil that plagues the land. Okay, lets get started. We are going to get the two items we need from this map even though we won’t use them until much later. 6 Head East towards the edge of town. In the middle of a clump of bushes you will see an old man sitting on a tree stump. This eccentric old guy is Theseus, the apothecary for the town of Trent. Simply talk to him and ask for his help. Once he asks you who told you to talk to him, answer “Marek”. He will then place the map on the ground for you and give you some much needed experience. Stop talking to him, pick up the map and head to the South from where you are. You will come to a small house with a single barrel in front of it; go to the front door to enter the house. Inside you will find Garrett. Talk to Garret to get the gate key from him (ask him about King Osric, ask him about the key, and swear you will kill the Duke). He will drop the key and give you some experience. Pick up the key and head out of the house. You may want to visit the apothecary or the armory before you leave town. It all depends on how confident of a fighter you are. Ranged weapons will make your fighting much easier. Once you are finished exploring the town, head North towards the destroyed village of Keswick. 7 Keswick Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Zombies- (Level: 2, 3) None. There are a few weapons scattered about the town and a small pile of gold. If you didn’t have enough money to buy something you wanted in Trent then go ahead and find the items (quarter staff, mace, dagger, pile of gold). If you get them all and sell the weapons you can get anywhere from 100 - 140 gold pieces (depending upon how much gold you get from the pile since it is random). Your goal for this map is to find the entrance to the catacombs, which is approximately in the center of town. You might as well beat down the zombies that are walking around the town before you head down into their lair below. They will be the easiest things you ever get to kill for the remainder of the game. 8 Catacombs Level 1: Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Zombies- (Level: 3, 4) Silver Key, Locked Chest, Padded Armor Ooooh, the catacombs! Spooky! Undead creatures shuffling through the dank corridors in search of human flesh to feed their eternal hunger. No need to fear, they are no match for you, right? Keep in mind that you are still in the early stages of adventuring, so it is probably a good idea to kill everything you come across so you can gain your experience levels to make you a better fighter. As you follow the corridor away from the stairs you will come to your first intersection. Head south. Simply explore the map, all the while heading West. You will eventually encounter three small rooms that are on the North side of a horizontal corridor. Inside the farthest 9 west room is the padded armor and the silver key. Put on the armor, it will make you much harder to hit. Notice the chest on the other side of the wall? That is where we are headed next. If you find the stairs going down to level 2 DO NOT go down them yet! You still need to get that locked chest of goodies for this level. So head back the way you came. You will eventually come back to the intersection where you headed south the first time. This time continue heading North. As you continue down the corridor you will start heading West again. You will finally enter a room with four support posts (don’t get surrounded!). In the south western corner of the room is the locked chest we are after. If you haven’t already done so, click on the Key button to turn the unlocking mode on. You can leave it on if you want. Why would you ever want to turn it off you ask? Sometimes you may need to choose which chest to unlock with the key you have. If you are fighting it can be easy to accidentally bump into the wrong chest and use up the key. Anyway, inside the chest you will find a blaster, the magic missile spell, a kalar, and some other miscellaneous stuff. If you want to develop your technology or spell casting proficiencies then arm one of them now, since it is easier to build proficiencies early in the game. Once you have these items head back around to the stairs that lead down to level 2. For those of you who are treasure hunters, there were also 3 healing potions, 3 piles of gold, and a sack with some gold and a gold ring in it on this level. 10 Level 2: Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Ghouls (Level 4, 5) Zombies- (Level: 4) Ring of Death, Potion of Agility Okay, head to the East to go get the potion of agility. Along the way you will meet a new type of enemy, ghouls. A little tougher than zombies, they should still not represent too much of a problem for you. Once you get the potion of agility (green potion), head back the way you came and then head south. Start to head in an easterly direction as you go. You will eventually curve north towards the stairs leading down. Don’t head down them just yet (you’re so gung ho!) Go get that brown sack just to the north. Inside it you will find the Ring of Death. The ring does not mean your death, but implies much pain and suffering for your enemies as it will increase the amount of 11 damage you deliver to them. You automatically put it on when you picked it up. Now head down the stairs. Treasure Seekers: There was a chest in a room with stairs leading down, don’t worry about getting that yet, you need to get to it from the level below. Also if you wanted to get all the goodies on this level there is a long sword, two healing potions, a bowie knife, a long bow, and two piles of gold. Level 3: Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Ghouls (Level 5, 6) Rusty Key, Ruby Key, Fireball spell You have now reached the last level of the catacombs. Adventurer beware! There are a lot of monsters on this level, so you may want to save the game. When you are ready head over to your right a few steps and pick up that rusty key. You don’t really need it 12 but it can’t hurt to have it. Head north, turn left, and then directly south. While you are heading south stay to the east at the fork. All the way at the end are two dead bodies and the Ruby key. Pick up the key (after you beat down those nasty ghouls that guarded it, uh oh, did I forget to warn you about those guys.) Well after you get the key head back north to the stairs that you passed that head back up. There you will find a chest containing the fireball spell. Be very careful when using this spell. You can kill yourself very easily with the fireball if you get caught in the explosion. It will take some practice to learn how to use this spell in narrow corridors without killing yourself. It is not a necessary skill to learn, so don’t worry. That is all for the catacombs so you can head back out when you are ready. If you want to use that rusty key then head south from where you picked it up (near the stairs that brought you down to level three to begin with, on the East side of the level). The chest contains potions that will increase your maximum hit points. It is not necessary to get these but they will prove helpful in the long run. Now that you are out of the catacombs and back in Keswick head East for a quick trip into the mountains. 13 Cartnell Mountains Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Trolls (Level 10, 11), Orcs(9,10) Plasma Rifle, Potion of the Ogres Although the monsters on this level are fairly high level there are not too many of them. If you find that you just can’t get through then come back later after you have finished Bailford Keep. As soon as you enter the mountains head east. There are two techniques that work to get you through. The first method is to step forward a little bit at a time to cause a monster to spawn. Then back up so that you can kill them one at a time. The other technique is to quickly head east to where the path narrows so the Trolls have a hard time getting to you and you can safely pick them off with a ranged weapon. Keep heading east and follow the path as it winds to the Southeast. At the end of the path you will find some more Orcs and Trolls to defeat. Now get the 14 red potion and the plasma rifle. The Potion of the Ogres will increase your strength. The battle axe is heavy and slow, so unless you have a high melee proficiency it is probably not worth picking up. Once you are done head back out of the mountains to Keswick. Once in Keswick head South to Trent. Then head East out of Trent into the swamp. Other items on the level are the Robe of Fizbaan, three piles of gold, two healing potions, a throwing axe, a mace, and a long bow. Swamp Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Swamp Things (Level 5, 6), Mud Slimes(5, 6) None 15 This map is simply for fun! Run around and kill swamp beasties. While you are at it you can pick up four healing potions, a quarter staff, and a pile of gold. Keep heading East out of the swamp and across the bridge. Keep heading East to Bailford Keep. Bailford Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Orcs (Level 8) None After you get passed the Orc guards approach the main gate of the Keep walls. Turn the Key button on (if not on already). Use the key you got from Garret in the town of Trent to open the gate (simply walk into the gate to use the key). Enter the keep to begin your quest to defeat Duke Caphis. If you wander around outside the Keep walls you can pick up a crossbow and a healing potion. 16 Keep Level 1 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Orcs (Level 6, 8), Dark Knights (Level 7) HobGoblin Archers (Level 6) 2 Guard Keys Head North into the main hall. You will be attacked by some orcs and some dark knights. There is a white guard’s key in the small chamber where the Dark Knights are coming from (the room in the upper right corner of the main hall, there are stairs leading up.) Pick up that key and head down the corridor to your left as you leave the chamber. You will come across some Orc guards that are guarding a locked wooden door. Open the door using the Guard’s key. Get the Guard’s key inside the room. Unless you picked up the extra ruby key from the catacombs in level 3 you will need to proceed to the dungeon 17 level to get another ruby key. Use the guard’s key to unlock the barred gate to the left of the room you are in. This is the entrance to the dungeon levels. The only other items on this level are additional guard keys. These keys can be used to unlock the dungeon cell doors to gain access to the creatures inside. You may want to clear out the keep of monsters so you can continue to gain experience. There is no need to pick up the other weapons on this level since there are better ones to be found on other levels. Keep Dungeon Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Orcs (Level 8), Ghouls (Level 8) Ruby Key, Locked Iron Chest, Plasma Blade The moans of beaten prisoners float on the dank and musty air of the dungeon. The dark fungus covered walls are a sign of the 18 terrible life a prisoner would have when thrown down here. You need to first find the ruby key. Head south from the entrance to the Dungeon level. The main corridor will turn left, follow it. The second jail cell on the northern wall has a ruby key hidden in the hay. Simply open the door and pick it up. Head back the way you came in. As you turn the corner to head North down the main corridor there is a secret passage behind the discolored stone on the right side. Go into the passage, on the other side you will find some piles of gold and the plasma blade. Head back up to the first level when you are done. Once back on the first level go into the small chamber to your right and unlock the iron chest. Inside you will find a healing potion, a potion which raises your maximum hit points and the robe of the magi. Now head back to the main hall in the direction you originally came. When you get to the small chamber where you got the first guard’s key, go up the stairs. 19 Keep Level 2 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Orcs (Level 8), Dark Knights(Level 11), Hobgoblin Archers (Level 8) Duke Caphis (Level 13) Jeweled Key, Crystal Key, Secret Treasure Room, Locked Iron Chest You are getting closer to challenging the Duke. Head North from where you entered the level. Note that the outer walls of the keep can only be entered through the corner tower staircases, the only thing to do in those sections is to kill monsters. Thus directions will be given as if you entered the level from the main hall chamber. When you head north from the stairs you will enter the grand dining hall. Defeat the Archers and Orcs and then head to the northwest corner of the room. Once there you will find a crystal key. Now head south to the throne room. To the south of the throne is a jeweled key. Kill those that stand in your way. 20 Once you have the two keys, it is time to face the Duke. Unlock the wooden door just below the staircase you came up at the beginning of the level. Slowly step inside the room trying to draw any Dark Knight guards into the open. Once you dispatch those pesky Knights, charge in and challenge the Duke. Once the Duke is killed unlock the iron chest in the corner (using the crystal key). Inside you will get a couple of magic rings and some potions. Now go to the upper right corner of the Duke’s chamber. There is a secret passage behind the discolored wall which leads to the treasure room. Once inside you will want to pick up the small sacks and then the iron chests. If you are strong enough you may want to try and put the Steel Scale armor on. You may get hit more but it will absorb the damage a lot more than the padded armor ever will. You should experiment with the different armors until you find one that protects you the best (depending upon your fighting style.) If you want additional experience points you should head down to the first level and then come back to Level 2 through the corner towers to clear out the creatures. If you want to continue your killing spree then continue up into each of the corner towers on level three. 21 Keep Level 3 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Orcs (Level 9), HobGoblins(Level 9) None There is not much to this level. Each of the corner towers have several monsters in them. Each of them have a guards key in them, so if you feel like opening more of those dungeon cell doors, or locked weapons closets you can collect the keys. Once you are finished head back out of the keep to the outside world. When you get outside you have a choice of actions. You can either head north to the Prairie or head West back to Keswick so that you can go to the Forest. 22 Prairie Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Jackelopes (Level 3, 4) None This level is simply a transition between Bailford and the town of Everdale. If you have the pulse wave rifle you may want to use it against the jackelopes. It is an excellent weapon for clearing numerous low level creatures in close formation (provided your technology proficiency is high enough.) 23 Everdale Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: None. None. The town of Everdale is a rest stop for the weary adventurer. The arduous journey from Trent could not be easy, so if you need healing potions you may find them at the apothecary shop in the northern part of town. There is nothing else to do in this level other than talk to NPC’s and restock on any supplies you need. 24 Forest Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Trolls(Level 12), Ghouls(Level 9) Rusty Key, Lightning Spell, Ring of Kings, Ring of Hermes, Steel Scale There are three sections to the forest. Let’s start on the right side. If you are not on the right side of the map then head south back to Keswick and re-enter the forest from the NorthEast corner of the Keswick map. Once you are in the correct side of the forest defeat the two awaiting ghouls and pick up the brown sack on the ground. Inside of it you will find the Rusty Key. Now head back to Keswick and go over to the NorthWest corner of the map so you can enter the left side of the forest. Now that you are on the left side of the forest map, head a little to the North. Fend off the trolls and the ghouls! Once you have beaten them into submission open up the locked chest with the rusty key. Inside the chest you will find the lightning spell. The spell is 25 good for doing a lot of damage to a couple of creatures in medium to close range. Try it out, but beware of the casting time required to use it. Now head back south to Keswick and head over to the center portion of the forest. If you didn’t get the steel scale armor from the Keep then now is your chance. Head North through the forest, following the path. Be ready for the ghouls that are going to ambush you. Once you reach the small clearing a couple of Trolls will attack you as well. After you have trashed them, go open the chest. Inside it you will find the two rings. Continue to head Northeast towards the entrance to the Lost Caves. Before you enter the caves, I would recommend that you save the game. For those of you who just can’t get enough of those treasure goodies, you can also find a mace and chain, 4 healing potions, 2 piles of gold, a halberd, and a brown sack of miscellaneous stuff. 26 Lost Caves Level 1 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Stone Golems (Level 12) Sword of Kaeless, Crystal Key, Stone Ring The first level of the lost caves is fairly straightforward. You need to head to the NorthEast corner of the map. Along the way the main corridor will have small alcoves with miscellaneous items. If you search them out you can find the following bounty: studded leather, healing potions (5), throwing axe, mace, potion of purity, and a pile of gold. Once you are in the Northeast corner you will come across a small alcove which has a crystal key and the Sword of Kaeless. Now take the crystal key and head back the way you came. The first 27 passage that heads North to a small alcove will have a locked iron chest in it. Use the crystal key to unlock it. Inside you will find the Stone ring and some other goodies. The stone ring makes your skin tougher so you can absorb more damage. Now head South and East (again retracing your path). The first corridor that leads south to an alcove will have an exit to the second level. Take this exit to Level 2. Level 2 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Stone Golems (Level 13) Ruby Key, Nova Spell OR the Rocket Launcher Head south away from the exit staying to the West side of any forks in the pathway. The first alcove that opens up to the west will have the ruby key in it. Grab it and while you are at it you may as well 28 grab the yellow potion in the main pathway as well. Go back to the main pathway and continue following it in a Southern direction. The cavern will gradually turn East. You will soon come across a large opening to the North. You will need to defeat several golems. Once you have killed them you will have to make a choice on which weapon you want to get. You may want to save the game and try out both of them to see which one you actually like. If you have the magic proficiency, Nova is a devastating spell. If you have the technology proficiency, then the rocket launcher is like a souped up fireball. Most players go for the Nova spell. If you want the Nova spell then you need to unlock the chest to the right. If you want the Rocket Launcher then you need to unlock the chest to the left. Once you have acquired your new found weapons, you can proceed down the stairs to Level 3. You do not need to go to level 3 to complete the game, but if you want to get the Robe of Illusion then this is the only place to get it. 29 Level 3 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Stone Golems (Level 9,12), Magma Golem(Level 11) Robe of Illusion, Ruby Key, Jeweled Key This level is fairly small but that simply means that you will have less room to fight the golems in. You will probably need to kill them all first before opening any of the chests, since you will be surrounded fairly quickly. Also, the chests need to be opened in a certain order otherwise you will be one key short to open the last one. Be wary of the Magma Golem, he tosses fireballs at you and it will not take many to kill you. When fighting the Magma Golem, keep moving and try to keep it on the move as well. If it is moving that means it won't be firing. Go to the Southwest alcove. Use the crystal key you got from Level 2 to open the iron chest. Now take the jewel key you get from 30 that chest to open the iron chest in the NorthEast alcove. You will get another Jeweled key from this chest. Take that key and use it to open the chest in the NorthWest alcove. The last chest on this level is unlocked. After you have opened all the chests you will have gained several other items and more importantly the robe of Illusion. On your way back through the second level, use the Ruby key you found in one of the chests and get the other weapon you had to leave behind (Nova or the Rocket Launcher.) March your way back out of these miserable caves and head back to the Forest. Once there, you will need to get to the right side of the Forest map. You can try and find the break in the tree line to sneak over there or you can head back to Keswick and then back up through the NorthWest corner. Now go East to head up to the Mountainpass level which leads to the tower. 31 Mountain Pass Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Trolls(Level 12), Ghouls(Level 12) None When you enter the level you will be blocked by a row of boulders. Since you got the Mountain map from Theseus at the beginning of the game, you use this as a "key" to unlock the boulders blocking you way. This will now give you access to the rest of the map. Simply follow the path as it curves around. You will eventually come to the tower. Simply enter the tower when you are ready. Treasure hunters note, there are only two healing potions on this level. Tower of Ze'ev This tower is full of surprises. The enemies that you fight are mostly demons. The lessor demons fight using hand to hand techniques. However, the greater demons use a much more potent 32 attack. They use a fireball spell, which can cause significant damage. It would be wise to take these one's out as fast as possible or avoid them all together. At the top of the tower is Ze'ev himself. He poses a significant threat to your quest. After defeating him you can then enter the nearest portal and proceed to the island of Krum, which is where the heart of the pervading evil lies. Level 1 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Lessor Demons(Level 13) Greater Demons(Level 13) Kevlar Body Suit You start out in a small square room with the exit back to the outside below you and a strange teleporter above you. Save the game at this point. Once you step inside that teleporter there is no way to get back. Now step into the teleporter. 33 You have been teleported to a new room. For this next part, kill off the lessor demons in this room before you head out in to the adjoining hallways. Once you finish them off head East. As soon as you enter the room travel the perimeter in a clockwise fashion, just keep moving - don't stop to try and fight the Greater Demons (unless you think you can take 'em). On your mad run around the platform that the Greater Demons are standing on, you will find a Ruby Key make sure you get it and keep moving around the platform until you arrive at where you came in from. Run out and head West. Once in the hallway find and enter the small teleporter. It will take you to another room which looks very similar. Don't worry about getting the chest, it's empty. Travel east down the corridor, fighting demons along the way. You will eventually come to a locked door. Use the Ruby key to open it. Inside the room you will find the Kevlar body suit. It is the best over all suit of armor, so you may want to put it on. Enter the teleporter that is inside of this room. You will be teleported back to where the Greater Demons were throwing fireballs at you. Immediately run south and down the corridor that connects to this room from the south. Follow this corridor to the end and take the stairs that lead up to Level 2. By the way, there are a total of 8 healing potions to be found on this level if you were keeping track. 34 Level 2 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Lessor Demons(Level 13) Greater Demons(Level 13) Kevlar Body Suit This level is a maze. A wicked creation from the Necromancer, it is used to delay would-be attackers long enough for his evil minions to hunt them down and kill them. Use the map from this guide to find the shortest path to the teleporter which then takes you to the stairs for level three. Once you step into the telelporter you will be transported to a small room with Greater Demons in it. Immediately run East to the stairs to make it out alive! Trying to fight the Greater Demons in such close quarters is next to impossible. 35 If you are adventuresome and want to get all the treasures from this level, the count is 9 healing potions, 1 red potion, 4 yellow potions, 1 green potion, 9 piles of gold, and a chest of gold. Level 3 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Lessor Demons(Level 13) Greater Demons(Level 13) Zombies(Level 10, 13) Silver Key, Crystal Key, Jeweled Key You start this level by having to choose between three portals. Before you step through any of them, pick up the Silver Key. Then go through the second portal (the one in the middle). You will be transported to a long corridor, nicknamed "the gauntlet." Head South and follow the corridor to find the crystal key. Once found, you can then use your silver key to open the door to gain access to the portal. 36 Step through it and you will be teleported back to where you first started. For those of you who want to be really sneaky, if you go through the portal on the far right you will be teleported to a den full of zombies. Find the Jeweled key in the south western corner of the room. Do not use this key to open the locked chest, therefore you will have an extra jeweled key which can be used on level four to get passed the Necromancer without a having to kill him. Now go through the first portal (the one on the left side of the screen). This will teleport you to a large room with a lava moat. Kill the Greater Demons and zombies. Once you have killed them all, sneak around the edge of the moat and get the Jeweled Key. The jeweled key and the crystal key are needed for the next level. Now head down to the teleporter to go to level 4 of the tower, the final stage for the isle of Arkoss. 37 Level 4 Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Lessor Demon(Level 8) Greater Demon(Level 8) Jackelopes (Level 10) Magus Ze'ev(Level 15) None Be on your guard; you will be attacked right off the bat by some demons. Simply use your keys to open the doors and kill all the creatures that get in your way. As soon as you are ready, head down the short corridor to the Southwest towards the Necromancer's chamber. The tried and true method to fighting the Necromancer is to charge into the room and keep moving in a circular pattern just out of his firing range all the while firing your weapon. Other players try to stay just inside the chamber entrance and fire out at the Necromancer. Once he drops the jeweled key, use it to unlock the door to allow 38 access to the portal. This portal will take you to North PortTown on the isle of Krum. If you got the extra jeweled key from level three you don't even have to fight the mage to the death. You can simply run into the room, unlock the door, and run into the portal (very sneaky, but very cowardly). 39 Part II - Krum (Level Design by Tim Berry) Port Town North Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: None. None. You begin at the docks of Port Town, in the northern sector. An inn lies to the north and a smith shop to the south. If you follow the path to the east you will see a large group of trees. Just to the right of these trees stands Flint. Talk to him and he will inform you that his brother is in need of help and that you might be able to help him accomplish his task. He informs you that his brother Les waits in the Black Forest. Which is located far to the southeast. A good place to start your quest, but there are many others to talk to in this town. 40 Also, if you are in need of some studded leather armor or padded, there is a hidden spot between the small grouping of trees just above the fountain. This will get you some gold if nothing else and closer to getting every item. Port Town South Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: None. None. Following the path to the south takes you to the southern part of Port Town. Just located to the west are the barracks. Gregor stands outside and tells you of the orcs who have been plaguing the town. He offers a reward if you can kill enough orcs in their camp. This camp lies directly to the south. 41 Start to head to the east and you will come across a well. Just south of this lies the apothecary, Winston. He will inform you that he needs a rare herb for one of his potions. This herb can be found in the Udder Swamp, which lies to the southeast. It can be found upon the body of a Swamp Thing. After killing the Swamp Thing and getting the herb return to Winston to collect your reward. Lastly, before you leave the town a healing potion can be found beside a tree in the southwest. A useful trinket for any adventurer. It would be useful to also make a visit to the orc camp; it will be a long time until you have a chance to come back. Scrub Lands Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Jackelopes (level 10,11) Orcs (level 10,11) Hobgoblins (level 10,11) Mudslimes (level 10,11) Zombies (level 10,11) Orc Scalp (maps shown below) The most important feature of the Scrub Lands is the orc camp. This is located in the south-most portion of the area. To get here simply walk south from Port Town. You will cross one zone and then arrive at your destination. Many orcs inhabit this camp so be careful. The orc who drops the scalp is located at the bottom of the camp. He will spawn just a little to the left of the southeast hut. After receiving the scalp you should proceed to talk with Gregor. Remember he is located in the southern portion of Port Town. These orcs also drop loot for those of you money grubbers. You can sell this loot at Port Town and then purchase some healing potions for you journey. It would also be wise to roam these lands killing everything you can. This will help you advance your level to be able to proceed smoothly through the lands. When you are ready to leave the scrub lands be sure to head to the southeast. Do not go through the White Forest. This area is too 42 tough for you at this time. Heading to the southeast will take you to the Plains. This is the next area to help you get closer to your goal. Northwest Sector 43 Northeast Sector 44 East Sector 45 Southwest Sector 46 Southeast Sector 47 South Sector Plains Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Hobgoblins (level 12,13) Swamp Thing (level 12,13) Mud Slimes (level 12,13) Jackelopes (level 12,13) None. (maps shown below) The Plains are the only way to get to the other towns. Upon entrance, you are in the northern section of them. To the south is the town of Dunar. To the northeast of the Plains lies the Udder Swamp and to the southeast lies the Shore. This area acts as more of a junction than anything else… well there are always monsters to kill and experience to be gained. 48 There is also a hobgoblin camp located slightly to the southeast of your entry point into the north Plains. Many hobgoblins patrol the camp and fire arrows so be careful. They can put up quite a fight. But killing them all will provide an abundance of experience. Once again, for those greedy people, a bag containing a dagger can be found at the camp. Thus placing you one step closer to acquiring every item. Northern Sector 49 Western Sector 50 Eastern Sector 51 Dunar Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: None. None. The town of Dunar has few major buildings. The only one of importance is the bar, run by the barkeep Erhardt. He provides nothing but a little conversation, but his bar provides some of the best food around. After exploring the town a little you will come across Cassandra. She can be found in the middle of the town just above the path. After a little chatting, she informs you that there are some ruins in the Tranquil Desert. She does not know what was there exactly, but it might be worth checking out. After all when has exploring not been rewarded? 52 Udder Swamp Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Trolls (level 14,15) Swamp Things (level 14,15) Mud Slimes (level 14,15) Rare Herb (maps shown below) The Udder Swamp can be a dangerous place, but careful players will be able to overcome the obstacles. To the west lies the Plains, from which you most likely entered, and to the east lies the Black Forest. South lies the Shore. One of the quests you have already received can finally be achieved at this location. In the southwest sector lies the Swamp Thing, which drops the rare herb. After killing this Swamp Thing you can pickup the herb and head back to Winston in Port Town. He will reward you for you kind deed. In the northeast sector of the swamp there is a special cave entrance. This leads to Thorgaurds Cave. You will not want to enter this cave yet (unless you want to die horribly). Just keep it’s location in mind for later when you are strong enough. There is still much more adventuring to do. 53 Northwest Sector 54 Northeast Sector 55 Southwest Sector 56 Southeast Sector 57 Shore Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: (maps shown below) Orcs (level 15) Swamp Things (level 15) Jackelopes (level 15) None. The Shore rests at the southern section of the island of Krum. To the north lies the Udder Swamp, west the Plains, and east the Black Forest and the town of Seaside. In the west sector, a group of orcs have created a camp from which to pillage nearby towns. It would be wise to exterminate this menace. Not only will you receive some valuable experience, but loot will surely be acquired as well. After they have been vanquished you should be ready for the Black Forest. But first it would be wise to travel to Seaside for some more potions and information. Bronze plate armor can be found by the orc camp in the western sector. Along beside this armor is a heal potion which will most likely be used immediately. 58 West Sector 59 Northeast Sector 60 Southeast Sector 61 Seaside Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: None. None. This town has little purpose but to allow you to sell your loot and purchase some more healing potions. I have placed Samantha here just to test your kindness. The only thing she will do is be rude and give you an opportunity to kill her. But the experience penalty will still apply. As soon as you sell your loot continue through the northeast exit of the town and into the Black Forest. 62 White Forest Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: (maps shown below) Hobgoblins (level 15) Mud Slimes (level 15) Trolls (level 15) None. If you want to travel to the ruins you will have to pass through the White Forest. This is directly east of the Scrub Lands. Acting as a boundary between the Tranquil Desert and the Scrub Lands, it prevents most undead from venturing towards Port Town. Upon entering the forest just head progressively east. Eventually, you will arrive at the Tranquil Desert. However, feel free to stop and exterminate all creatures. The experience can always be used. Northern Sector 63 Southern Sector Tranquil Desert Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: (maps shown below) Ghouls (level 17) Zombies (level 17) None. This area contains the toughest undead around. Ghouls and zombies roam around in abundance. Be warned though; the desert is large and hard to navigate through. The major feature of the desert is its ruins. It is located just to the east of the heart of the Tranquil Desert. Here is where Wraith can be found. He asks to be killed for he has been the victim of a horrible accident. He was a powerful mage who cast a great spell… but it backfired. This misfortune cost him his humanity. Now he wanders 64 the ruins forever bound to them. Should you chose to grant him his wish and kill him you will be rewarded with a bonus of experience for ending his long suffering. Northwestern Sector 65 Southwestern Sector 66 North Sector 67 South Sector 68 Northeastern Sector 69 Southeastern Sector 70 The Ruins 71 Black Forest Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Hobgoblins (level 17) Trolls (level 17) Mud Slimes (level 17) Orcs (level 17) Jackelopes (level 17) Lesser Demons (level 17) Les’ Key (maps shown below) Many creatures inhabit the Black Forest. Hobgoblins, trolls, mud slimes, orcs, jackelopes, and even lessor demons. It is a very large forest and many travelers have lost their life to it. To the south lies the town of Seaside, west lies the Udder Swamp and the Shore. Les, Flint’s brother, can be found in the forest. If you travel to the eastern portion of the forest, northeast of the entrance from Seaside, you will see a group of tree's making something like a pathway. By walking through the path you will come to a small section of forest. It is here where Les is located. By talking to him you will receive a key that will allow entry to the Ancient Castle. After receiving the key you should continue to explore the forest just a little. This will allow you to get some more experience before traveling to Thorgaurds Cave. When you feel you are ready head to the northeastern sector of the Udder Swamp and proceed north to the cave. 72 Northwestern Sector 73 Northeastern Sector 74 Western Sector 75 Eastern Sector 76 Southern Sector Thorgaurds Cave Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Stone Golems (level 18) Magma Golems (level 18) None. (maps shown below) Thorgaurds Cave, the only way to get to the Ancient Castle, is perilous indeed. Bodies of the dead can be seen all around and blood stains the walls. It provides an indication of what is to come. This area can be like a maze, so it would be wise to follow the maps. Also, in order to survive, keep moving. It’s harder for the monsters to get you if you move fast. 77 If you see a chamber full of gold, don't feel too bad that you cannot get to it. It was a joke on the part of the Level Designer. If you want the last laugh, check out Part III of the guide to see how you can sneak in there anyway using a cheat command. Southern Sector 78 Western Sector 79 Northern Sector 80 Eastern Sector 81 Ancient Castle Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: Invisible Stalker (level 19) Storeroom Key (castle maps shown below) Upon exiting Thorgaurds Cave you will come to a clearing. No monsters inhabit this clearing. The only features are the Ancient Castle and many trees. It is important to save before entering the Ancient Castle itself for the creatures that inhabit it are tough indeed. Gather your strength and charge forward. There is only one type of creature that wanders these halls. It is the invisible stalker. The spawn animation will be the only thing, which alerts you to its presence. When you see it, you must start to attack. However if you use spells such as the fireball, you will most 82 likely die. Since you can not see the creatures, if they are close to you the explosion from your fireball will engulf you as well. Lightning, Nova, and a good melee weapon will be your best bets if you get surrounded. It will take skill and ambition to make it through this castle. As you plunge into the depths of this castle it will grow darker. You will know you have reached your goal when you come to a furnished chamber brighter than the rest. A lone chest lies upon the ground. Inside this chest is the storeroom key. “What am I to do with this?” you ask. Remember the locked door in Port Town? It is here you must travel to and fight that which has been plaguing the land. Ground Floor 83 Basement 1 84 Basement 2 85 Storeroom Monsters Encountered: Items to Find: (map not necessary) Evil Bishop (level 20) None. Here, in Port Town (north), you will find the enemy behind all the evil. It turns out to be another Bishop. When traveling through time another 'copy' appeared. Yet this one is not quite as good. He is the same Bishop, but warped somehow. He has turned towards evil and embraced its darkness. You must kill him in order to bring peace. But, what happens if Bishop kills himself? 86 Part III Tips & Tricks Choose the proficiency you want to develop, early. Most characters have a primary proficiency. Mynx's primary is ranged weapons. If you like to also use magic, then as soon as you find a magic spell, start using it. If you wait until later in the game it will be much harder to develop the skill with tougher monsters. The secret to staying alive is to keep moving! Most monsters attack with melee weapons so if you can keep moving they will have a much harder time of attacking you. If you let monsters surround you or corner you, it will be much harder to fight your way out. If you are using the fireball spell, fire it while walking away from your enemies. This will help to keep you from walking into your own spell (a common and fatal error by young spell casters). If your fighting style is close combat, your best bet for armor is the Steel Scale or Bronze Plate. If you prefer to use ranged weapons it is best to either use one of the robes, the padded armor, or the studded armor (which ever will give you a higher Armor Class Rating). In all cases if you can get the Kevlar Body suit, it will provide you with the best overall protection, no matter what fighting styl e you prefer. Some monsters have ranged attacks. The trick to fighting these guys is to use your long ranged weapons against them (long bow, rocket launcher, fireball, blaster, magic missile). Since your weapons have a longer range, you can keep firing at them while staying just out of their reach. As soon as you start the game (and you are not playing Nepharia) buy a bow from the weapons shop. This will help you fight monsters before they can get close to you to do any damage. 87 Certain characters are easier to start out with than others. Use Mynx to get familiar with the game. If you think you have mastered the game, try playing with Hiro, who is much tougher to play. Most monsters are near items. If you see a lonely item in the middle of a room- don't rush in to get it. Simply take a few steps toward it to try and get the monsters to appear a few at a time. This can be boring, but as you get better at fighting you will be able to handle more creatures at a time. Enabling Cheat Commands: Press the ALT and F1 keys simultaneously (while playing the game). This will pause the game and bring up a small dialog box. Simply choose a command from the Command droplist box. Then fill in the appropriate data for the command and away you go. A short description of the command is given at the bottom of the dialog box to help you understand what the command does. This is the same box that was used while testing the game. There are also various check boxes that you can select to activate other debugging/cheat features. Note that the A/I Descriptions check box will cause a significant drop in the frame rate on most systems. How to get the gold from Thorgaurds Cavern. Activate the cheat command dialog box. Select the check box marked TileCheck Off. Then simply walk through the walls of the map to get the gold.
