May, 2015 - The Little Italy Lodge

May 2015 Issue
A message from the President
Dear Brother and Sisters:
Spring is one of my
favorite times of the year.
Everything is turning green,
birds are singing and
warmer weather is upon
us. The lodge is also
budding with returning
members, new committee
chairmen, officers and
volunteers. It is so wonderful
to see old friends and new
acquaintances at our Friday Night Dinners and at last
month’s membership meeting. We are so very fortunate
to have a wealth of people who give of their time and
talents. As we are planning for the coming year, please
feel free to share your thoughts and ideas. This is your
lodge and I would like to explore new projects and events
that have interest to all our members.
The Ways & Means Co-Chairman, Joyce
Armenta and Mike Castino, are working with members
who are assisting with promoting activities for the Little
Italy Lodge. These include: Bobby Burger Entertainment
(June 28),wine tasting – Tony & Robyn Greever;
Pampered Chef/Vera Bradley Bingo – Nancy Wolfe &
Sue Walmsley; Ladies Tea – Silvana & Maria Ferrante;
selling Italian Christmas Ornaments – Barb Goodman &
Sue Walmsley; dancing lessons – Sadie Witz; Italian
StoryTelling – Monica LaPenta; an Italian Sauce Cookoff, and other family-based events. The Little Italy
Lodge will continue our famous Crab Feast (Sept 27),
Sock Hop (Oct 25), Children’s Christmas Party (Dec 5),
Adult Christmas Party (Dec 6), and New Year’s Eve
Celebration (Dec 31).
Activities of the Grand Lodge of Maryland
include hosting a booth at the Towson Town Fair (May
2nd & 3rd), Bi-Annual Convention (June 13th), Sons of
Italy Night at Ripken Stadium (July 26), and the Annual
Memorial Mass @ St. Leo’s (Sept 13th).
Please come out and support our meetings, events and
Friday Night Dinners. Also, don’t forget the great
festivals: St Anthony (June 6th & 7th) and St. Gabriel
(August 15th & 16th). The lodge is going to be busting
with great fun and wonderful fellowship. Come and be a
part of the excitement!!
In May, we honor the Blessed Mother along
with our very special mothers. The Little Italy
Lodge will be recognizing our mothers, thanking
them for their love and support for always being
there when we needed them and in our hearts when
they are not. Please join me in honoring all
mothers at our next membership meeting, May
12th @ 7PM.
Fraternally,
Ali Tinelli Sliwka, President

Recognizing a Humble Man
The Taste of Italy scholarship dinner was held
Sunday April 26, 2015. The food, wine and music
was delicious and entertaining. The lodge wants to
recognize Jerry Elliott for his selfless dedication and
passion for the success of the scholarship
program. He and his wife, Angela, have worked
tirelessly for over 14 years to support young men and
women of Italian decent pursuing their educational
endeavors. To show our appreciation, the lodge has
established the "Angela and Jerome Elliott Sr.
Scholarship Fund," which will be awarded this
coming year and every year thereafter. The
scholarship committee has awarded over $155,000
to 39 recipients.
Grazie Infinite Jerry!
Maggiolata
Maggio risveglia i nidi,
maggio risveglia i cuori;
porta le ortiche e i fiori,
i serpi e l’usignol.
Schiamazzano i fanciulli
in terra, in ciel gli augelli,
le donne han nei capelli
rose, negli occhi il sol.
Tra colli, prati e monti,
di fior tutto è una trama;
canta, germoglia ed ama
l’acqua, la terra, il ciel.
