Overview
The following report provides a detailed examination of the national results to the question asking teachers
about the priority areas they believe would improve their work-life balance and enable them to become a more
effective teacher. Over 8,000 Canadian teachers responded to the CTF Survey on the Quest for Teacher
Work-Life Balance conducted online between February 24th and March 26, 2014. These teachers shared their
opinion with respect to their top four priority areas among 14 issues examined in the survey.
The question asked was worded as follows:
Question: Select the four top priority areas that you feel would improve your work-life balance and
enable you to become a more effective teacher.
The 14 surveyed areas teachers were asked to select from were as follows:

Reducing class sizes

Improving support for children with special educational needs

Improving support for ESL/ FSL students/programs

Increasing and improving resources (e.g., books, computers, etc.)

Increasing time available for planning and preparation

Reducing non-teaching demands (administration and paperwork)

Increasing opportunities for professional development

Improving opportunities for collaboration and sharing with peers (through Professional Learning
Communities for example)

Improving support for technology in the classroom

Providing programs to support wellness and work-life balance

Reducing the frequency of curriculum changes

Increasing the level of teaching autonomy within the classroom

Reducing the number of standardized tests/large scale assessments

Increasing support from school administration
Why Are These Results Important?
Teachers are telling us the priority areas they feel will improve their work-life balance and enable them to
become a more effective teacher. This is a concrete example of survey results that inform us about the areas
we can focus on to support our members and meet teachers’ needs. Whether it be through research,
advocacy, lobbying efforts or collective bargaining, or simply to keep us in touch with what is important to
teachers, the following analysis is intended to help facilitate such endeavours by providing us with the most
relevant data and comparisons.

Methods Used to Examine Teacher Views
The views expressed by teachers are compared and ranked in this report based on the two following methods.
Method 1: Total Score
This method is used in this report to compare and rank the views of teachers on 14 examined issues. The total
score is an overall weighted calculation that takes into account the rankings respectively allocated by surveyed
teachers to each examined priority area.
Under this approach, items ranked first received higher total scores and are valued higher than subsequent
ranks with lower total scores. Given that the question is based on top 4 priorities, an issue ranked by a
respondent as 1st gets a score of 4, while an item ranked 2nd gets a score of 3, an item ranked 3rd gets a
score of 2 and an item ranked 4th gets a score of 1. The total score is the sum of all weighted rank counts.
The total score is used to determine the overall ranking for each priority.
It should be noted that total score values cannot be used to compare the views of the different subgroups of
respondents because of their varying sample sizes. Total scores can be theoretically higher for samples with a
larger number of respondents than those with a smaller number of respondents, given that the total score is a
calculation that includes the responses of all respondents in an examined sample. The rankings for each
respective characteristic based on the total scores, however, can be compared and are charted in this report.
Note that total score values were charted for the overall results for all teachers in Chart A1.
Method 2: Percentage Distribution
This method provides the breakdown of the percentage of teachers surveyed who reported an area as their
first priority, their second priority, their third priority or their fourth priority. It enables us for example to examine
the percentage of teachers who consider a given issue as their number one priority, as well as the total
percentage of respondents who consider an issue among their top 4 priorities.
The total percentage of individuals ranking a given issue as one of their top four priority areas may reveal a
different ranking from the ranking based on the total score method. This is due to the fact that an issue ranked
as higher priority is given more weight in the total score method. For the purposes of this report, issues were
charted in the order shown in Chart A1 which presents the ranking based on total scores for overall teacher
responses.
The percentage-based method enables us to compare the responses for various characteristics, regardless of
the size of the samples.

Canadian Teachers' Federation
Characteristics Examined
In addition to examining the overall views of teachers surveyed, more detailed comparisons for selected
characteristics are examined. These include gender, school level taught, language of the school taught and
area of residence of the students attending the school.
Section B examines each issue individually and compares teachers’ views according to specific characteristics.
Section C examines how the characteristics listed above influence teachers’ views on the 14 issues examined.
The percentage share charts in Section C are respectively divided into two parts, one for the 7 priority areas
with the highest overall scores and one for the 7 priority areas with the lowest overall scores in the order
displayed in Chart A1.
Note that “other/not applicable” responses with respect to school level taught and language of the school are
excluded from the comparisons in this report, as is the response “A relatively even mix of urban and rural
areas” with respect to the area of residence of the students.
How to Use This Report
This report is a reference document that provides various ways of comparing the views of teachers with
respect to the examined question. This allows you to focus on the data that meets your specific needs. If you
are focusing on one specific issue, go to section B and study the results and comparisons pertaining to that
issue. If, on the other hand, you want to compare the views for all issues for a specific characteristic, go to
Section C.
Technical Note
Due to the variety of delivery methods, the number of invitations cannot be tracked and hence a response rate
cannot be calculated. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online surveys.
